9. Stone Golem

Backpack (7/10): Rope x2, Wood x14, Branches x13, Leaves x14, Stone Axe (1/100), Stone Knife (96/100), Torn Bark x44.

Su You looked over her belongings, picked up a branch to use as a pen, and started scribbling on the ground.

It was around noon—about twelve o’clock. Su You was able to tell the time so precisely for two reasons.

First, the starting time on the Sunset Continent was 8 a.m. Second, there was a countdown timer—both the aura and the Lord’s Token had countdowns.

The aura’s original 72-hour countdown now showed only 68 hours left, which was enough to serve as a temporary timer for the next three days… Of course, it was also essentially a death timer.

She had to gather enough resources and find a suitable spot to establish her territory before the countdown ended, or it would all be over.

She’d already gone over the materials she needed: ‘Plank x5, Stone Block x5, Flame Stone x1’. Planks were a tier-three material. Tier-one was wood; tier-two was wood blocks, made from three pieces of wood; tier-three planks were made from four wood blocks.

In other words, 1 plank = 12 wood, so 5 planks = 60 wood.

Next, 3 stone fragments = 1 stone block, so 5 stone blocks = 15 stone fragments.

Also, chopping trees consumed axes. One axe could gather about 20 wood—unless she planned to only collect branches and craft them into wood, she’d need about two more axes, which meant two more stone blocks, or ten stone fragments.

Basically, she was still short on stone fragments.

But Su You had anticipated this, and already had a plan to deal with the shortage.

Although the forest had very few mineral resources (including stone), to balance in-game resources, there was a creature called the ‘Stone Golem’ in the forest—defeating it had a small chance of dropping stone fragments, and a very slim chance of dropping a whole stone block.

Su You didn’t expect to get a stone block, but as long as she could get some stone fragments, she’d be happy.

The Stone Golem’s main trait was its extremely high defense—after all, it was made of stone, so regular weapons could barely harm it. Its weakness, however, was obvious: it was very slow, and its death conditions were rather unique…

While she was thinking, both the roasted berries in the campfire and the berry juice on the workbench finished cooking.

Su You ate two servings of roasted berries and drank a cup of berry juice, restoring her hunger to about ninety. Then she put the leaves, torn bark, empty wooden cup, and nearly-broken axe together with the remaining leaves in her backpack.

After that, she picked up 3 fiber scraps and put them in her backpack.

For the next while, Su You didn’t do anything else. She simply sat quietly, eyes closed, resting and letting time pass. Only when her stamina was nearly full did she open her eyes.

……

……

Not far from the depths of the forest, several creatures over six feet tall, slow and lumbering due to their massive size, stood by the trees. Their bodies looked as if they were pieced together from irregular chunks of stone. It was hard to tell if they were zoning out or just resting.

Upon observation, there were six Stone Golems here. Three of them were huddled together, seemingly engaged in some strange interaction.

The remaining three were split into two groups—one pair whispering to each other, and one solitary Stone Golem.

But Stone Golems clearly didn’t know what loneliness was. Even with no companions nearby, the lone golem was perfectly content, facing away from the others and playing happily with the leaves and dirt on the ground.

The solitary Stone Golem seemed to be cleaning the ground. It carefully piled the leaves to one side, revealing the soil beneath. But just as it was about to clear the leaves by its other foot, it noticed the pile it had just made suddenly shift.

“Hss-aa!”

The Stone Golem stomped its foot in frustration, as if annoyed that its hard work had been undone and the freshly cleared ground was covered again.

Its noise drew the attention of the other five golems, but when they looked over, they didn’t see anything unusual. The noisy golem was still fiddling with the leaves, so after a moment, they lost interest and looked away.

Just then, as the others turned away, the lone Stone Golem finally finished clearing the leaves. As it was about to clap its hands in satisfaction, it noticed a stone fragment had suddenly appeared on the ground—one that looked almost identical to the pieces making up its own body.

“Hss-ooo!” Upon seeing the stone fragment, the Stone Golem let out a sound as if it had discovered a priceless treasure, louder than before.

But this time, the other five golems weren’t interested—one even seemed annoyed by the noise and shuffled further away.

With its companions ignoring it, the lone Stone Golem was slowly lured away by the ‘moving’ stone fragment…

Hidden behind a bush, Su You was pulling a string attached to the stone fragment ‘bait’, using it to lure the golem step by step away from its companions…

Once it was far enough, and had reached the trap she’d set, Su You yanked another rope.

Bang! With a loud crash, like something heavy hitting the ground, the Stone Golem was suddenly bound by several ropes.

Before it could struggle, the ropes slid down its limbs to the weakest joints where the stone pieces connected… Su You gave another hard pull. The golem seemed to sense something was wrong and began to struggle fiercely.

The force of its struggle nearly pulled Su You off her feet.

But she was prepared—the ropes were all anchored to thick, sturdy trees.

No matter how strong the golem was, it couldn’t possibly uproot several massive trees at once.

So they were locked in a stalemate. The Stone Golem’s struggles grew weaker and weaker… until finally, it vanished in a flash of white light, leaving behind only the ropes—now lying empty on the ground as if they’d once bound something—and a few stone fragments.
