Chapter 4: Overnight at Sea

“What a little ingrate.”

Jiang Lai wiped the water off her face, feeling a bit sorry for that piece of apple.

“So generous for someone so poor.”

She muttered, then took out a bottle of water and some biscuits and started eating.

After drinking only half a bottle of water and eating three biscuits, Jiang Lai put the rest of her food back into her backpack and focused on fishing for treasure chests.

Whether she’d have enough to eat today and tomorrow depended on what she could fish up.

“Here it comes!”

Jiang Lai pulled hard on the fishing rod and hauled up her second chest of the day.

Another bronze chest!

She was delighted.

From the public chat, she’d already figured out that most people could only fish up wooden chests, while she’d gotten two bronze chests in a row.

If people knew, their jealousy would drown her.

Jiang Lai happily opened the chest.

【Beast Language Decoder ×1, Plastic Sheet ×5】

And… that’s it?

She took out a small sea-blue brooch from the chest and looked it over from every angle.

She really couldn’t believe it—her last chest of the day was a beast language decoder.

This thing couldn’t be eaten or worn, so for her current situation, it was basically useless.

If she’d gotten it earlier, she might have figured out what that chubby little creature was saying—maybe even gotten some ocean intel.

But now the little guy was gone, and the decoder showed up—wasn’t that just infuriating?

Jiang Lai slammed the bronze chest shut, put it in her backpack, and exchanged it for 50 wood.

At least that was some consolation.

Not wanting to waste anything, she pinned the sea-blue, wave-shaped brooch to her clothes.

The sunlight gradually faded, and the sky darkened.

According to the system panel, it had been four hours since Jiang Lai entered the game.

When she first started, she’d felt hot and had taken off her jacket.

Now, even with her jacket on, she felt cold.

Was the temperature difference between day and night at sea really this big?

Jiang Lai looked out at the endless sea. Without sunlight, the sparkling blue surface turned dark, as if ink had been poured into it.

The sea at night was completely different from the sea during the day.

She wrapped her jacket tighter and opened the shop, looking for something useful.

A camping tent?

108 Shell Coins.

No way.

A sleeping bag?

The cheapest was 78 Shell Coins.

She couldn’t bring herself to spend that. The system had said Shell Coins could only be found in silver chests or higher.

Actually, what she really needed was fire—for warmth and light.

A lighter wasn’t expensive, but she was on a boat and couldn’t safely make a fire.

Jiang Lai closed the shop, gritting her teeth.

She couldn’t look anymore—she was afraid she’d spend all her money on impulse.

Since she couldn’t buy anything, she checked her backpack for anything useful.

She went through her items one by one until she saw it.

“Plastic sheet!”

Her eyes lit up. This was a great item—if nothing else, it was perfect for windproofing and keeping warm.

She took out a sheet—2 meters by 2 meters, big enough to cover the whole boat.

After thinking for a moment, she took out a few nails and a piece of wood.

Using the wood as a hammer, she spread the plastic sheet over the boat, leaving some slack, and nailed the edges to both sides of the boat.

This way, she could lie flat on the boat, covered by the plastic sheet.

She also nailed down the sheet at her feet, so it wouldn’t blow away and would keep out the wind.

From her waist up, the sheet wasn’t fixed, so she could move easily and pull it up to cover herself when she wanted to rest.

Jiang Lai lay down, but the surface was hard and her neck was uncomfortable.

So she took out two more plastic sheets.

She folded one to use as a mattress and the other as a pillow.

Now she had a pillow, a mattress, and a blanket.

Finally, she was satisfied.

See? As long as you don’t give up, there’s always a way.

Jiang Lai believed that as long as she was thrifty and resourceful, she’d always find a cheaper, more effective solution.

She pulled the plastic sheet up to her neck, leaving only her head exposed to breathe.

It looked… well, peaceful.

But who cared about details at a time like this!

Jiang Lai felt completely safe.

The sea breeze swept by, but the boat and the plastic sheet shielded her from the cold.

The little boat drifted slowly on the sea, destination unknown.

As she floated, listening to the gentle lapping of the waves, Jiang Lai closed her eyes and drifted off to sleep.

That night, who knows how many people lay awake, crying in despair.

But none of that had anything to do with Jiang Lai.

The next day, Jiang Lai was woken by the heat.

The plastic sheet had gotten hot under the sun.

She opened her eyes to a bright blue sky and the sparkling sea.

She sat up and put all the plastic sheets and nails back into her backpack.

She took out the half-finished bottle of water from yesterday and drank a few gulps, then ate two biscuits.

“Nice.”

Satisfied, she carefully put the remaining water and biscuits back in her backpack.

She checked the time—it had been ten hours since she’d gone to sleep.

Her face was sweaty and sticky from the sun, so after weighing whether sweat or seawater would feel worse, she chose to wash her face with seawater.

She took out the yellow linen shirt and draped it over her head to shield her neck and face from the sun.

She didn’t care about getting tanned, but if she didn’t do any sun protection, getting sunburned would be miserable.

This was her second day in the game.

Tomorrow would be the last day of the newbie protection period.

Jiang Lai thought about what the system had said at the start, and all those survival game novels she’d read.

After the newbie protection, danger usually followed.

She didn’t know what threats would come after three days—colder temperatures? Or those underwater creatures that could bite off a player’s finger?

Whatever it was, upgrading her boat to level 2 before then was definitely the safest move.

She took out her fishing rod and stroked it gently.

“My little darling, what kind of day I’ll have today all depends on you!”

She said, half-joking, half-serious.
