Chapter 120: "Comforting Officer Su Mei Mei Arrives":

I Farm In The Apocalypse

---

It might be due to drinking spiritual water for over six months, but the bees in Jing Shu’s space had become more aggressive, and their stingers seemed more venomous than usual.

For the past few days, Jing Shu had been using her The Fat Chicken as a test subject, forcing the bees to sting the chicken while she held it down (otherwise, the chicken would run away or retaliate by eating the bees). The chicken’s skin would swell into a large bump, and it would cluck in pain until Jing Shu applied some honey, which helped reduce the swelling.

"Good girl, it's just an injection to boost your immunity," Jing Shu comforted the chicken. As for why she always used the The Fat Chicken for her experiments... well, she just couldn’t resist.

How tough was the The Fat Chicken’s skin?

After drinking spiritual water for seven months, the chicken’s body was mostly muscle. During a previous experiment to test the healing effects of spiritual water, Jing Shu had to use considerable force to cut a small incision. If the bees could still sting through its thick skin, it suggested that the bees had gained some kind of armor-piercing ability from the spiritual water.

Regardless, the bees she had raised for six months could now serve as an interim weapon. They were discreet and could launch surprise attacks. Plus, in large numbers, they could swarm an enemy.

The most important thing was that they could produce honey.

"If only there was someone to test how deadly these bee stings are. That way, I could judge their effectiveness firsthand."

Jing Shu thought about this while fiddling with the 7x7x7 Rubik’s cube in her hands. Compared to the 4x4x4 cube she had started with, the 7x7x7 was much more challenging.

Solving it anytime soon seemed impossible. After all, restoring a scrambled 7x7x7 Rubik’s cube to its original state required aligning hundreds of smaller squares, and Jing Shu wasn’t quite there yet. Even professionals train for years, and she was still a novice. But hard work could eventually make up for her lack of skill, so she continued to practice.

Unlocking the new cube’s abilities would be a challenge, but to gain its immense power, she needed to persevere. Nothing worthwhile came without effort.

What Jing Shu didn’t expect was that someone would soon volunteer to test the bees' stings—and that person was none other than someone she least expected.

The people of Wucheng had been eating the five-grain worms for half a month now, and the rate at which they adapted was astonishing.

Just like Jing Shu in her previous life, at first, people had refused to eat them at all. Then, as starvation loomed, they forced themselves to eat a little. Now, not only had they fully accepted this new food source, but they also actively hunted for worms to exchange for work points. These days, the most popular conversation topics—aside from the death toll in Hainan’s migration efforts—were all about the five-grain worms.

For example:

Wind 3: "What flavor of five-grain worms did you eat today? I had the spiced salt ones, but the line was so long, I’m not sure if I’ll get any next time."

Fat Girl 25: "Try the dry-fried ones! At least they come with chili flakes. I miss the self-serve buffet during the Dragon Boat Festival, when we could eat as much as we wanted."

Wang Cuifang sent a voice message: "Young people don’t know how to be frugal. Plain boiled five-grain worms are the most economical—they come with water! With the price of water going up again, all my work points are spent on water now."

Wind 3: "Sister, please stop talking. You’re the one who started digging worms out of toilets and boiling them. I swear the soup I drank had a hint of yellow. I can’t stomach it anymore."

Wang Qiqi then chimed in: "@everyone, just so you know, the government has introduced a new holiday policy where self-serve buffets will be offered on every major holiday. Also, the community’s new visiting officer has arrived. Please be careful what you say—they have a lot of power and can determine if you’ve committed any crimes."

Jing Shu frowned when she saw the new message, and soon after, the group received a notification.

Wang Qiqi had invited "Comforting Officer Su Mei Mei" to join the group.

Jing Shu: "???"

What kind of nonsense was this? She clicked on the profile of the newly added visiting officer and discovered that it was none other than her former aunt, Su Mei Mei—the very one she had cut ties with! How had Su Mei Mei gotten this position?

Jing Shu narrowed her eyes. Did her cheap father pull some strings?

She had planned to deal with Su Mei Mei after Wu Youai’s kidnapping had interrupted her previous attempt. With everything else going on, she had put it off, but now that things had calmed down, Su Mei Mei had walked right into her hands.

As the saying goes, when there’s a road to heaven, some people refuse to take it, but they willingly break into hell instead.

Jing Shu clenched her fists as a familiar excitement surged within her. She sent a message to Wang Qiqi: "Let’s make a bet. How long do you think Su Mei Mei will last in this job?"

Wang Qiqi: "?? I have no idea."

"I’m betting she won’t last seven days," Jing Shu replied, grinning as she bared her teeth.

Wang Qiqi was utterly confused. What on earth was Jing Shu planning? Was something about to happen?

Meanwhile, in the group chat, Su Mei Mei had already started her speech.

Comforting Officer Su Mei Mei: "@everyone, hello. Starting today, I am the person in charge of this community. I will be recording the living and death statistics, as well as monitoring housing conditions."

"From now on, every afternoon by 6 p.m., you must check in with me. You will need to report what you did today, what food you ate, and where you went."

"Of course, I will also be conducting home visits to inspect your living conditions, find out what you eat, and determine the sources of your belongings. If any of your possessions were obtained through illegal means, they must be surrendered, and no further action will be taken."

"Wucheng has entered a strict law enforcement period. Any crimes such as robbery or murder that are reported and confirmed will be documented."

"Oh, you might not know the consequences of being recorded, right? If you are marked, you will no longer be able to receive food from any supermarket in Wucheng."

"Now, let’s start by removing the dead people from the group, and the rest of you, come check in with me."

Su Mei Mei was thrilled as she typed her message. Having the power to decide people’s fates felt incredible. These country bumpkins had no idea that once they were marked as criminals, they wouldn’t just lose access to food—they might not survive at all.

She had long hated the days of living in fear. Those who had committed crimes, especially those who had robbed and killed, deserved to die!

And Jing Shu’s family? They deserved to die too!

Su Mei Mei’s eyes burned with hatred. She had originally been assigned to a different district, but her father had suggested she choose a less politically sensitive area, where she would have more freedom.

So, she had immediately selected this community, knowing that Jing Shu and Su Lanzi lived there. After learning about the new policies from her father, Su Mei Mei couldn’t wait to use her power to destroy their family. She might spare Su Yiyang, but both Jing Shu, who had hit her, and Su Lanzi, who had reported her, had to die.

As she scrolled through the app containing Jing Shu’s detailed data profile, Su Mei Mei sneered.

"Too bad I only have level-one access right now, which only lets me see your family’s score and some trivial bank transactions and credit reports. But that’s enough. With your high score, I can still come up with a reason to accuse you of a crime and destroy you."
