Chapter 159: I’ve Finally Gotten Used to Eating Maggots, and Now You Want to Switch to Red Worms?
I Farm In The Apocalypse
“Luckily, Jing Shu set up this plastic canopy with a layer of tempered glass beneath it. No way rainwater will get into the house now,” the family sighed in relief. But suddenly, Jing Nai exclaimed in panic:
“Oh no! Jing Lai went out to work today! There are so many bugs in the rain—what will she do?”
Everyone’s faces changed at the mention of Jing Lai being out in such conditions, especially after witnessing what happened to The Fat Chicken. They were terrified of the unknown worms now, though in a few weeks, they'd fully understand the red worms. By then, people would be grabbing these worms as snacks, just like they had done with maggots before.
“Should I go pick her up?” Jing Ba offered.
Jing Shu quickly stopped him. “Come on, Nai! Don’t you remember the sealed raincoat I prepared for Aunt Jing? Scientists kept warning about torrential rain, so I put a raincoat and an automatic life jacket in her bag. You even asked me how many life jackets I had and joked about putting them on the livestock.”
At the mention of the sealed raincoat, the whole family remembered.
When Jing Shu had first brought that hideous raincoat home, everyone had resisted it. Jing Nai had protested, “In this heat, you’ll suffocate wearing such a non-breathable thing!”
Jing Shu had shrugged helplessly. “This was all I could get. Everything else was out of stock. Just make do with it.”
But now, when Jing Shu brought it out again, even Jing Nai had to give a thumbs up. “My granddaughter’s always got foresight. This raincoat’s perfect—those bugs can’t get in. It’s really thoughtful.”
With the raincoat, the family felt more at ease about Jing Lai.
“Let’s all stay inside. It’s too dangerous to go out in this weather,” Jing Nai advised.
Jing Shu handed a raincoat to Jing Ba. “Dad, we need to attach a bag to the filter system to collect these worms regularly. Otherwise, they’ll clog the purifier.”
“You’re always so detail-oriented, my girl. I’ll go set it up right now,” Jing Ba responded.
Although water wasn’t scarce in the second year, the pipes were still filled with red worms and their eggs. If the eggs weren’t filtered out, they’d soon hatch into worms...
So Jing Shu had installed a six-stage filtration system that could even remove microorganisms, producing water that met international drinking standards. The downside? It had a short lifespan and required frequent filter replacements.
Fortunately, Jing Shu had prepared in advance, purchasing enough filters to last. The filtration system, which had cost her 200,000 yuan, was finally being put to its intended use.
In this life, Jing Shu was determined to keep all red worms outside the villa. Not a single one was allowed to enter!
She had suffered enough from these worms in her previous life...
For Jing Shu and her family, this situation was relatively minor. After all, they had the protection of the PVC canopy, salt to kill the worms, and Jing Lai had her sealed raincoat for work.
With hearts somewhat lighter, the family returned to their meal, finishing their hotpot and going about their business.
Meanwhile, chaos was unfolding in the group chat, with Wu Youai struggling to keep up with the messages while Jing Shu chimed in with her mischievous suggestions.
Fat Girl sent a tearful voice message: “What should I do? I can’t get these worms out of my hair. My scalp is so itchy, like there are thousands of ants crawling on it!”
Oh, you’re not wrong. That’s the eggs hatching into worms. They’re having a party on your scalp, setting up their little homes and mingling with your hair. Soon, you’ll have a whole new batch of red worms.
Ugly Girl chimed in: “Luckily, I have short hair, so there aren’t as many worms. But my blanket and clothes are ruined! I only had one set of clothes, and now everything’s covered in worms! My bed is crawling with them! I’m going insane!”
Wang Qiqi: “@Wu Youai, can you report this situation to the higher-ups? What should we do?”
Wu Youai: “They’re working on it. Salt can quickly kill these soft-bodied worms.”
Wang Cuihua sent a voice message: “But we traded all our seasonings for work credits!”
Wu Youai: “Then just cut your hair.”
Fat Girl: “But we traded away all our kitchen knives and big scissors... I can’t cut anything with these tiny scissors!”
Young Mother: “I have an electric razor, but there’s no power...”
Luo Zhu: “Going bald would be so ugly... Isn’t there any other solution?”
As they debated what to do, a cry for help came through:
Zhang Bing Bing’s husband: “Help us! The three of us are tangled together, and we can’t get free! Zhang Bing Bing is about to give birth!”
Wu Youai: “Stay where you are, I’ll be right there!”
When a pregnant woman was involved, everything else had to wait, even if Zhang Bing Bing was losing her mind. She still needed care.
Jing Shu and Wu Youai donned their sealed raincoats, grabbed an electric razor, and headed to Zhang Bing Bing’s house.
As they walked, their boots squelched on the slippery ground, making soft, squishy noises. That sound meant they were stepping on red worms.
But no need to worry—the red worms were as resilient as silk strands. You could step on them several times and still not kill them.
Wu Youai stared at the raincoat for a moment before saying to Jing Shu, “You’ve got such incredible luck. You’re like a child of destiny.”
…
When they arrived at Zhang Bing Bing’s house, the three people inside were tangled together in a bizarre position, with Zhang Bing Bing and her swollen belly sandwiched in the middle.
Zhang Bing Bing let out strange noises, grabbing the worms in her hair and eating them while giggling gleefully.
“Animals!” Wu Youai cursed.
The three were stuck in place, unable to move, because the red worms in their hair had tightly bound them together.
Jing Shu took the electric razor and shaved Zhang Bing Bing’s head first, then shaved the other two. Only then could they finally separate.
“Don’t throw away these worms tangled in the hair. You can exchange them for work credits at the supermarket tomorrow!” Wu Youai said to Zhang Bing Bing’s shameless husband before leaving. “The new policy is out—they’ve officially named them red worms, and they’re starting to collect them.”
“I understand. I’ll call you again when Zhang Bing Bing is about to give birth.”
Wu Youai muttered a few curses under her breath about the two of them, vowing to call Li Yitian after the birth to take them away.
“@Everyone, I’m shaving heads in the basement. If you need it, come on over. Also, the new policy is out—these worms are officially called red worms, and the supermarket will now collect them in exchange for virtual currency!”
Fat Girl: “Oh no, does that mean we’ll be eating these worms in the future?”
Luo Zhu: “The temperature’s been dropping lately, and the maggots aren’t as active. We’ve been surviving off the stockpile, but it seems like these red worms will become our next food source.”
You’re absolutely right.
Fat Girl: “These worms are so thin, like strands of hair. They don’t look very tasty... I’ve finally gotten used to eating maggots at least. At least maggots have some meat on them. I don’t know how these red worms will taste... But either way, I hate them.”
