Chapter 141: “The Father of Two… Kids?!”

Married to the Childless Commander: The Pregnancy Pro Wins Effortlessly in the ’70s

Gu Jianing wrapped her arms tightly around Sheng Zexi, burying her face in his broad chest, breathing in his unique scent and the sense of security he brought.

Lately, Gu Jianing had felt as if a piece of her heart was missing, but now, that missing piece had finally been found!

While he was away, Gu Jianing could still hold herself together.

But now that he was back, she couldn’t hold back anymore. All the emotions she’d been suppressing these past weeks burst out in an instant.

“Wuwu, why did you take so long to come back?”

“Why were you gone for so long?”

She complained, her voice full of grievance, but as soon as she finished, Gu Jianing realized Sheng Zexi hadn’t been away for no reason—he’d been on a mission.

“I—I didn’t mean to blame you.”

“It’s just that… I missed you so much…” Gu Jianing choked out, trying to explain.

“I know, I know.”

Sheng Zexi cupped Gu Jianing’s cheeks in his hands, their eyes meeting. He could no longer suppress the longing and love in his heart. He lowered his head and kissed her.

Gu Jianing kissed him back.

In that moment, a single kiss said it all.

The kiss was passionate, intense, burning hot. As their breaths mingled, their hearts drew closer than ever.

Who knew how long it lasted? Only when Gu Jianing’s cheeks were flushed and her breathing unsteady did they finally part.

Sheng Zexi went to light the kang bed, stoke the stove, and boil some water.

He asked Gu Jianing how she’d been during the month he was gone.

“Why do you look thinner?” Sheng Zexi scrutinized his little wife, frowning.

“No way, I’m not thinner. Look at how big my belly is already.” Gu Jianing put her hands on her hips, sticking out her belly.

Sheng Zexi put the kettle on the stove and looked over.

“You’re about three months along, right? Why does your belly look a bit big?” Sheng Zexi had specifically consulted Dr. Hao about this. Normally, at three months, even if you’re starting to show, it should only be a slight curve. But Ningning’s belly looked more like she was four months along.

Gu Jianing snorted softly, “That’s because you’re going to be the father of two kids at once!”

“The father of two… kids?!”

Sheng Zexi’s head snapped up, staring at Gu Jianing in shock. “Ningning, you—you mean…?”

“I checked. There are two babies in my belly! So you’re going to be the father of two, and I’m going to be the mother of two. Well? Are you happy?”

Sheng Zexi walked over, gently placing his hand on Gu Jianing’s rounded belly, his eyes reddening. “Happy. I’m so happy.”

How could he not be?

He’d always thought he’d never have children.

Later, after marrying Ningning and recovering his health, he began to hope he could have a child with the woman he loved.

Even after Ningning got pregnant, he didn’t dare hope for too much. Just having one child in this lifetime would have been enough for him.

But now, Ningning had given him a surprise—two children at once!

How could Sheng Zexi not be overjoyed?

He blinked hard, barely holding back his tears.

“By the way, have you told your parents, or your grandparents? It’s already been three months,” Sheng Zexi asked.

“Not yet. I was waiting for you to come back so we could tell them together.”

“Alright, then let’s call them together tomorrow.”

“Okay.”

Once the kang was warm, Sheng Zexi carried Gu Jianing onto it. She nestled in his arms, quietly enjoying the warmth and security he gave her.

“A lot happened while you were away on your mission.”

Gu Jianing began telling Sheng Zexi about everything that had happened over the past month—how she’d passed her assessment and become a doctor in the Traditional Chinese Medicine department at the military hospital.

“My wife is amazing. I knew you could do it.” Sheng Zexi stroked Gu Jianing’s hair, pride in his voice.

His words were full of praise. Ever since they got married, this man—who used to be prickly like a hedgehog and sharp-tongued with everyone—had nothing but praise for his wife. In front of Gu Jianing, he seemed to shed all his armor, no longer prickly or caustic, just gentle and soft.

“Of course I’m amazing. Otherwise, how could I have healed so many people, and even your body? How could I have helped Sister Shuwan, Sister Jiang, and even gotten myself pregnant?” Gu Jianing was never one to be humble. Hearing Sheng Zexi praise her made her even happier.

“It’s because my medical skills are so good that I was able to win an award for the rescue mission this time.”

“I heard that when a military wife wins an award, her husband is honored too, and it helps with promotions.”

Gu Jianing went on to tell Sheng Zexi about the rescue during the landslide in Xinghua Village, and about Amber.

Gu Jianing had thought Sheng Zexi would continue praising her, but when she turned to look at him, she saw only worry and heartache in his eyes. “Ningning, you were pregnant and still joined the rescue. You didn’t rest at all—it must have been so hard on you.”

“Ningning, you should think more about yourself and the babies.”

If something had happened to Ningning or the babies, what would he have done?

In fact, when he came back from his mission and saw her standing on the podium, being awarded for her outstanding performance in the rescue, he was happy for her—but that wasn’t what he truly wanted.

What he wanted most was to come home and find her and their babies safe and sound, waiting for him.

He didn’t want anything else. He didn’t need her to do anything special to help his career. All he wanted was for her and the babies to be safe. That was enough.

Gu Jianing heard the concern in Sheng Zexi’s voice. She hugged him back, looking up at him. “I know. Don’t worry, I know my limits.”

Actually, it was because she’d taken the pregnancy health pills and the comfort pills, so both she and the babies were doing well. Even though the rescue lasted a whole day and night, she was just tired and hungry—nothing else.

To be honest, Gu Jianing wasn’t the type to sacrifice herself for others. She was selfish—she always put herself first.

Only after taking care of herself would she think of others.

“Alright, as long as you know your limits. Ningning, thank you for everything you did while I was away.” Sheng Zexi lowered his voice, gently kissing her hair, his eyes full of deep affection.

“You haven’t told me about your mission yet. Of course, I’m not asking about the details—just, why were you gone so long? Didn’t you say you’d be back in a month at most?”

God knows how worried she was when a month passed and Sheng Zexi still wasn’t back.

“You have no idea how worried I was. I even had a nightmare…” Gu Jianing told Sheng Zexi about the nightmare she’d had.

After hearing it, Sheng Zexi’s expression turned a little strange.

“Ningning, I’m starting to think you can see the future in your dreams…” Sheng Zexi sighed, skirting around the mission details, and told Gu Jianing about some things that had happened—like how his comrades were seriously injured, how he used a hemostatic bandage, and in the end, managed to save their lives."
