Chapter 46: Is Your Wife a Doctor?
Married to the Childless Commander
“Yeah, we caught them.”
“That’s good.” Still, Gu Jianing was a little worried about the child’s condition.
The child had been drugged and hadn’t woken up yet. Earlier scans suggested that if the child didn’t wake up soon, the drug might cause brain damage.
There should be medical staff on this train who could help the child, right?
Thinking this, Gu Jianing felt a little more at ease.
At that moment, the carriage was filled with people discussing and cursing the human traffickers.
No one knew how much time had passed when suddenly, the train conductor appeared in Gu Jianing’s carriage, accompanied by the staff member who was holding the child.
“Comrade soldier, you were the one who reported the traffickers and helped us catch them, right? Thank you so much.”
With the conductor’s personal thanks, everyone in the carriage finally realized that it was Sheng Zexi, who had been traveling with them, who had discovered the traffickers.
Now, everyone looked at Sheng Zexi with awe and respect.
The family of three who had earlier demanded meat from Gu Jianing were even more shocked. They hadn’t expected Sheng Zexi to be the one who caught the traffickers. Thinking back on how they’d provoked the couple before, they felt a lingering fear.
“Yes.” Sheng Zexi stood up and saluted the conductor. “Actually, it was my wife who first noticed something was off about that elderly couple, and she also smelled the drug on the child. She told me about it.”
The conductor’s eyes lit up. “Is your wife a doctor by any chance?”
Sheng Zexi: “You could say that.”
“Then could we ask your wife to help save this child?”
There were indeed medical workers on the train, but their skills were limited. They could tell the child had been drugged, but didn’t know how to treat it.
So, hoping for a miracle, they brought the child to Sheng Zexi and his wife.
They hadn’t expected Gu Jianing to actually be a doctor—and the first to notice the traffickers, too.
If she could tell the child was drugged just by smelling, maybe she could save her as well?
Sheng Zexi hadn’t expected the conductor to ask Ningning to help the child.
He silently blamed himself for speaking too quickly. In his mind, since Ningning could treat his sister-in-law and was going to treat him as well, she must have some medical skills. But right now…
He looked at Gu Jianing, his gaze apologetic.
He wasn’t sure if Ningning was confident about this.
Gu Jianing couldn’t help but smile wryly at his look, but she still raised her head and said to the conductor, “Put her down, I’ll give it a try.”
Though she said she’d try, Gu Jianing actually had a solution.
“Great, thank you, comrade.”
Soon, the little girl was laid on the lower bunk. Under everyone’s watchful eyes, Gu Jianing calmly took out her own set of needles.
Previously, when she was learning acupuncture to treat her sister-in-law, she had studied all the acupoints thoroughly and practiced them until she was skilled.
So, waking someone from drug-induced unconsciousness with acupuncture wasn’t difficult for her.
Everyone’s eyes were on Gu Jianing.
Some people whispered to themselves, wondering if such a young girl could really wake a drugged child.
“Hmph, maybe she’s just showing off,” someone muttered under her breath. It was the same woman who had shamelessly asked Gu Jianing for braised pork earlier.
Now, she was the one most displeased with Gu Jianing, and she secretly hoped Gu Jianing would fail to wake the child.
She grumbled quietly, not daring to speak too loudly because of the crowd, so only her husband heard her.
He glared at her, but in his heart, he was hoping for the same thing.
His cold gaze fell on Gu Jianing, wishing she would fail.
“Wow, those needles are so long.”
“That must hurt a lot, getting stuck with those.”
“You guys just don’t know any better. This is called acupuncture. Look at the way that young lady handles the needles—she’s clearly an expert.”
Sure enough, Gu Jianing had already taken out her acupuncture kit, pulled out the fine needles, and with swift, practiced movements, inserted them into the little girl’s body.
After a few needles, Gu Jianing stopped.
A while later, she removed the needles.
At that moment, the little girl moved.
“Hey, look, her hand moved!”
“Her eyelids are fluttering. Is she waking up?”
“Is it really that amazing? Just a few needles and she’s awake?”
Under everyone’s gaze, the little girl’s eyelids fluttered, and then she opened her eyes. Seeing herself surrounded by strangers, she immediately burst into tears.
“Mama, mama…”
Maybe it was because Gu Jianing was closest, or maybe the little girl just naturally liked her, but she crawled into Gu Jianing’s arms, crying for her mother.
Gu Jianing had always liked children.
Especially this little one, who had just been kidnapped and was only three or four years old.
Gu Jianing hugged her gently and comforted her.
“There, there, don’t cry. We’ll help you find your mama…”
Gu Jianing took out a few White Rabbit milk candies. “Here, have some candy. No more crying.”
Sure enough, candy is every child’s favorite and the one thing they can’t resist.
With the sweet treat, the little girl stopped crying.
At three or four years old, her speech wasn’t very clear.
After some gentle questioning, Gu Jianing learned that the little girl’s name was Guoguo. She was traveling with her mother to find her father.
As for her father’s name, her mother’s name, or where they were going—she didn’t know.
But when she saw Sheng Zexi’s military uniform, Guoguo pointed and said, “Daddy wears that.”
Gu Jianing and Sheng Zexi exchanged a glance. Gu Jianing asked, “Guoguo, are you saying your daddy wears the same clothes as this uncle?”
Guoguo, with candy in her mouth, nodded without hesitation.
Sheng Zexi said, “Looks like Guoguo’s father is a soldier too.”
Guoguo said she and her mother were going to find her father. Were they visiting him, or moving to join him? They just didn’t know which military district her father belonged to.
Sheng Zexi studied Guoguo’s face carefully. He felt she looked a little familiar.
Suddenly, a face flashed through his mind, and Sheng Zexi’s eyes lit up.
“I know whose daughter she is!”
Gu Jianing, the conductor, and the others all looked at Sheng Zexi.
Sheng Zexi said, “If I’m not mistaken, she’s the daughter of Captain Lin, who lives next door to us in the family compound. His daughter’s name is Guoguo, and she’s four years old this year.”
Although Sheng Zexi and Captain Lin were both captains, they weren’t very close.
Captain Lin had only been transferred to the Northwest Military District in the second half of this year. Sheng Zexi remembered him because of his dark complexion and stern demeanor."
