Chapter 144: The Warehouse Manager

Natural Disasters and the End of the World, She Went Crazy After Stocking Up on Supplies

Hou Jianming pulled Su Su into his arms, playing with her as his tone softened considerably.

“You’re right, that Gu Youcai is not a normal man.”

Any healthy man, both in body and mind, how could he possibly remain indifferent to such a beautiful sight?

He buried his head in Su Su’s neck and took a deep breath.

But then he grew even more puzzled—if Gu Youcai really hated women, why would he pursue An Meili?

Miss An was beautiful, yes, but compared to Su Su, she lacked the gentle allure of a mature woman.

Hou Jianming frowned: Could it be that he was attracted to An Meili’s strength and wanted to make use of it?

In a post-apocalyptic world full of danger, a beautiful woman was naturally less valuable than a powerful partner.

The thought of Gu Youcai competing with him made Hou Jianming angry, and he couldn’t help but tighten his grip.

Su Su cried out in pain, “Ouch…”

Hou Jianming looked down to see tears in her eyes. He quickly loosened his hand and asked, “Su Su, between me and Gu Youcai, who do you think is more attractive?”

Su Su rolled her eyes inwardly.

Isn’t it obvious?

One is 1.8 meters tall, broad-shouldered, slim-waisted, handsome and elegant.

The other isn’t even 1.7 meters, with dark skin and a sharp, monkey-like face.

The difference couldn’t be clearer!

Of course, she would never say what she really thought. Instead, she replied sweetly,

“Of course it’s you, Boss! You’re the master of the mountain and the base, with so many elite soldiers at your command. How could Gu Youcai compare to you?”

Hou Jianming was pleased by her answer, the corners of his mouth lifting in satisfaction.

That’s right, Gu Youcai was just a pretty boy—how could he possibly compete?

Even though that guy had a fair amount of supplies, compared to a base as big as his, it was just a drop in the bucket.

Feeling smug, he thought it was time to show An Meili his wealth.

With all the resources he had, there was no woman he couldn’t win over!

He instructed Su Su, “When you get back, tell An Meili to come see me.”

Su Su agreed and stood up to leave.

But Hou Jianming suddenly grabbed her again. “No rush, keep me company for a while first.”

Su Su froze, cursing inwardly, but put on a coy smile and leaned in toward him…

After walking the dog, An Nan returned to the villa and went straight upstairs to practice.

Her birthday banquet was just a few days away. Once she and Gu Zhiyu finished their mission, they’d be leaving this place.

Who knew if they’d ever have a chance to meet again, so she cherished every moment learning from him.

An Nan had a solid foundation, but her moves were too scattered. With Gu Zhiyu’s guidance, she improved rapidly.

If his arms weren’t both injured, she would’ve wanted to spar with him again.

Just as she was sweating from practice, there was a knock at the door.

When she opened it, it was Su Su again.

Su Su’s clothes were disheveled, her forehead was sweatier than An Nan’s, her makeup and lipstick were smudged, and her skirt showed signs of being torn.

She was about to speak when she noticed An Nan was also sweaty and slightly out of breath.

Su Su gave her a knowing, half-smiling look. “What were you two doing in here?”

An Nan was about to reply, but Gu Zhiyu, frowning, spoke first. “What do you want?”

Su Su was already intimidated by this cold man. Seeing his displeasure, she quickly got to the point.

“An, the Boss wants to see you right now. He has something to say.”

She delivered the message and left without waiting for An Nan’s response, heading downstairs to rest.

An Nan noticed Su Su rubbing her waist and walking awkwardly, and couldn’t help but raise an eyebrow.

She might not have eaten pork, but she’d seen pigs run.

Back in college, whenever her roommate came back from a date with her boyfriend, she looked just like this—though never as wild as Su Su.

It was obvious what Su Su had just been doing in Hou Jianming’s villa.

After closing the door, Gu Zhiyu frowned and said, “Hou Jianming doesn’t have good intentions toward you.”

An Nan replied, “It’s fine. He can’t beat me.”

She finally had a chance to get into their villa—she had to take a look.

Seeing Gu Zhiyu still frowning, she added, “Just look at the state Su Su was in. I’m sure I’ll be perfectly safe right now.”

With Hou Jianming’s scrawny body, he probably didn’t have any energy left to try anything with her.

An Nan left the dog with Gu Zhiyu and set off.

When she reached the iron gate again, this time she wasn’t stopped. The two bodyguards opened the gate as soon as they saw her.

They were even more polite than before. “Miss An, please come in.”

She nodded, pointing to the villa in the center. “It’s this one, right?”

She’d seen Su Su enter this one earlier.

The bodyguards nodded, and An Nan walked straight over.

The villa door wasn’t locked; it opened with a pull. The spacious living room was empty, with only luxurious sofas and a crystal chandelier in sight.

No wonder this was the main residence of the base leader—it was much more lavish than the small villa she stayed in. It couldn’t compare to a mountainside mansion, but it was the best house in this villa area.

An Nan looked around and called out, “Boss?”

“Miss An, you’re here?”

Hou Jianming, dressed in a silk robe and holding two glasses of red wine, slowly walked down the stairs.

He approached An Nan and handed her a glass. “Try it. The guys picked up this fine wine from a winery.”

An Nan had plenty of fine wine in her own space and had no intention of drinking his.

Who knew what he might have put in it?

She didn’t reach for the glass. “Boss, did you forget? I’m allergic to alcohol.”

Hou Jianming immediately set the glass down on the coffee table. “Ah, my mistake. Look at my memory—I forgot you can’t drink.”

He started to look for another drink. “Wait a moment, I’ll get you some juice.”

An Nan quickly stopped him. “No need, Boss. I’m not thirsty.”

She got straight to the point. “May I ask why you wanted to see me?”

Hou Jianming gave her a friendly smile. “It’s nothing major. I just wanted to ask if you’d be interested in the position of warehouse manager.”

“Warehouse manager?”

An Nan hadn’t expected him to suddenly offer her a job, and such a coveted one at that.

In the apocalypse, managing the base’s warehouse was undoubtedly the cushiest job around.

Hou Jianming crossed his legs and took a sip of wine. “Women are detail-oriented, and you’ve got good skills. I’d feel at ease putting you in charge of the warehouse.”

Before An Nan could say anything, he stood up. “Come on, I’ll show you our warehouse.”

He strode out the door, leading the way.

An Nan followed immediately.

Hou Jianming didn’t go far, taking her straight to the villa next door.

No wonder, An Nan thought, she’d explored the whole base and never seen the storage warehouse.

So it was hidden behind the iron gate, inside a private villa."
