Chapter 122: Follow That Van
Natural Disasters and the End of the World
Long Cong’an watched his boss’s expression. “Boss Gu, do you think that submachine gun could be ours?”
He’d thought it would be simple.
Firearms weren’t circulated in China, and Boss Gu’s submachine gun was especially rare. If there was the sound of a submachine gun in Linbei City, chances were, it was Boss Gu’s.
But this time, the person even had an assault rifle.
That meant it might not be the person they were looking for after all. Maybe the other party was just that powerful—armed with all kinds of guns.
Gu Zhiyu’s face was unreadable. “We’ll know if we go take a look tonight.”
He could recognize his own gun.
Long Cong’an nodded.
“Boss Gu, there’s something else. In Jing’an District, there’s a villa community where someone’s set up a private base called the ‘Mountain Base.’ They’re recruiting under the Gu Group’s name, and it’s gotten pretty big.”
Gu Zhiyu raised his eyebrows.
The group was already gone, and most of his people had been dismissed. Yet someone was still using the Gu name to recruit?
Gu Zhiyu asked, “Who’s in charge of the base?”
Long Cong’an replied, “Not any of our former higher-ups. Just a junior manager from a branch company. Boss Gu, should we get involved?”
As he finished, he nervously wiped his palms.
Most of their own people had been let go, but that base had grown to nearly a thousand members. It really wouldn’t be easy to deal with...
Gu Zhiyu gave a faint smile. “No need. A bunch of fools being led by a fraudster—what trouble could they possibly stir up?”
If they really caused a big mess and attracted official attention, they’d get what was coming to them.
Long Cong’an breathed a sigh of relief.
Good. If he really had to gather people and go fight that base, it would be a huge waste of payroll and supplies.
Gu Zhiyu asked, “Anything else?”
Long Cong’an shook his head. “That’s all.”
Gu Zhiyu said, “Let’s head back for now. We’ll go to Maple Forest Residence tonight.”
Long Cong’an agreed, but didn’t move.
Gu Zhiyu glanced at him, puzzled.
Long Cong’an gave an awkward laugh. “I just wanted to ask... how’s Consort Xi doing...?”
Gu Zhiyu smiled faintly and pressed play.
Dusk was falling.
A black Hummer drove from the hillside villa toward the city.
The car stopped across from Maple Forest Residence. The driver got out and walked slowly toward the entrance.
It was Long Cong’an.
By now, residents were starting to come out and move around.
Long Cong’an stopped a man and handed him a piece of candy.
“Hey, I heard there were gunshots in your complex a while back. Scared the hell out of me. What happened?”
The man was in a hurry to scavenge supplies and was annoyed at first, but when he saw the candy, his attitude changed instantly.
He quickly pocketed the candy and said, “Let me tell you, today was really something...”
Building 6, Apartment 1402.
After getting up, An Nan had a quick meal, tidied up the house, and then took Fugui and Laifu out.
She first stopped by Chu Peipei’s place, left her some bullets, and entrusted Laifu to her care.
Er Kui’s brother’s base was heavily guarded—not easy to sneak into.
She didn’t know how long she’d be gone, so she had to ask Chu Peipei to look after Laifu for her.
As for Fugui, there was no way he’d let her leave him behind.
This stubborn dog could wait at home for a day, but if she didn’t come back after two, he’d probably jump out of Chu Peipei’s window to look for her.
So An Nan decided to bring Fugui along—just as well, she could see how his training had paid off.
Chu Peipei took Laifu and looked him over in surprise.
“Nannan, how did your chicken grow so fast?! He’s already twice the size of my Xiaobai!”
“Xiaobai?”
“My little hen.”
As Chu Peipei spoke, she opened her door a crack, and a white hen peeked out.
She seemed a bit timid, hiding inside and not daring to come out, but her eyes were fixed on Laifu in Chu Peipei’s arms.
Laifu noticed her too. He immediately put on a proud air, raising his head high.
Hmph! So timid—how could she be worthy of being the same species as me?
Ever since witnessing An Nan kill someone that morning, Laifu had been on his best behavior. But now, out at someone else’s place, his arrogance returned.
An Nan stifled a laugh and explained, “Mine just eats a lot, and he’s a rooster. Maybe roosters and hens grow at different rates!”
Chu Peipei thought for a moment. “Yeah, that makes sense.”
Then she smiled at An Nan. “Don’t worry, Nannan. Your chicken won’t lose a pound with me—I’ll take great care of him!”
Fugui looked at Laifu, head held high, then turned away and farted disdainfully.
Hmph! Ugly chicken, what’s there to be proud of!
The fact that the boss took me out and left you behind says it all. Clearly, I’m the favorite.
He excitedly pawed at An Nan’s leg.
Sis Nan, let’s go! Leave this ugly thing behind!
After leaving Chu Peipei’s, An Nan went up to the 15th floor to leave some bullets for Zhao Ping’an as well.
Zhao Ping’an took the bullets and said, “Idol, wait a sec.”
He went inside and brought out a silver ring.
The ring was adjustable, with nothing set in the middle except a square protrusion. The style was unisex—suitable for anyone.
An Nan asked curiously, “What’s this?”
Zhao Ping’an winked. “My latest invention—a weapon.”
“A weapon? This ring?”
Zhao Ping’an demonstrated.
“There’s an ultra-fine special wire coiled inside. Just press the mechanism, and it shoots out. Loop it around someone’s neck and give a gentle pull—it can take off a whole head. Lets you kill even when you can’t carry a gun.”
An Nan tried the ring and found it really worked.
She couldn’t help but praise him. “You’re amazing—a real treasure. You can make anything.”
Zhao Ping’an blushed. “As long as you like it, Idol. I’ve got a bunch of other cool stuff in the works. Once I finish them, I’ll give them all to you!”
They chatted for a while longer before An Nan took Fugui downstairs.
Outside the complex.
Long Cong’an jogged back to the car parked across the street.
“Boss Gu, I asked around. Everyone says the shooter was some female demon in Building 6. Just now, I happened to talk to a resident from there and got her name.”
Long Cong’an paused, looking a bit odd. “Turns out... it’s An Nan.”
“Boss Gu, Miss An Nan is beautiful and kind. I don’t think she’d take your stuff. Besides, she’s got an assault rifle—probably not the person we’re looking for.”
Long Cong’an instinctively defended his savior.
Gu Zhiyu looked out the window, silent.
Just then, a nondescript Wuling minivan drove out of the complex.
The passenger window rolled down, revealing a dog with its tongue hanging out.
Gu Zhiyu froze, then smiled. “Quietly follow that van.”"
