Chapter 57: Moving

Natural Disasters and the End of the World

An Nan smiled as she comforted Chu Peipei, “It’s fine. Just stay here until the floodwaters recede. If the owners really come back, I’ll explain things to them for you.”

Chu Peipei thought it over and nodded in agreement.

After all, nothing is more important than her own life.

In fact, before An Nan spoke up, she’d already been worried. The looks those neighbors gave her today were truly terrifying.

She shot An Nan a grateful look. “An Nan, thank you!”

Zhao Ping’an, listening from the side, was genuinely happy for Chu Peipei. “That’s great! You’ll be much safer living on the 14th floor! My idol really is the best—beautiful and kindhearted!”

An Nan couldn’t be bothered to listen to his flattery and told him to hurry up and move his things home. Then she turned to Chu Peipei and said,

“Wait here for me a moment.”

She then went back to her apartment and fetched the universal lock-picking tools that Bai Wenbin and his sister had brought earlier.

Together with Chu Peipei, she pried open the door to 1401. There was only a bit of furniture inside, all covered with dust cloths.

Chu Peipei was extra careful not to touch anything that didn’t belong to her as she moved her supplies in.

Then she went back downstairs to her own place and brought up the rest of her supplies, along with the medical books she often read.

She sat in her new apartment, carefully counting her supplies.

Two tubs of dried fish, over 100 jin of crocodile meat left for trading.

100 jin of potatoes, and over 150 jin of various other dry goods like noodles, millet, and sweet potatoes.

Plus two boxes of bottled water, three boxes of matches, two gas canisters, one propane tank, and a bundle of candles.

Chu Peipei couldn’t help but sigh: I guess I’m pretty well-off now.

Looking at the supplies in her new place, then thinking of the two locked doors in the hallway and An Nan living right across from her, she felt a surge of security.

Ever since meeting An Nan, it really seemed like good things happened every day!

On the other side, Zhao Ping’an had just reached his front door when he saw two corpses lying outside.

He was stunned for a moment, then found it a bit funny.

These two must have seen him leave and thought his mom was home alone and easy to bully, so they came to rob the place…

Come on, it’s me who left, not the house’s traps!

His mom might not be as strong as a young man, but when it comes to using those traps, she’s even more ruthless than he is.

The two intruders had been turned into pincushions by poisoned arrows.

Zhao Ping’an tossed their bodies into the floodwaters and opened the door to go inside.

“Mom! Come give me a hand, I brought the supplies back!”

Hu Cui Lan heard him and came over, saying, “You didn’t make enough of that poison. I just used up half a bottle at once. Make some more when you have time.”

“There were only two people outside and you used half a bottle?!”

Zhao Ping’an was utterly shocked.

“Mom, you’re too ruthless. Just a little bit of that stuff is enough. Half a bottle could take out twenty people!”

He paused, then added, “Besides, it’s not like I can make as much as I want. We don’t have enough chemicals at home to waste it like that…”

Hu Cui Lan pouted. “Alright, alright, you little brat! I’ll use less next time.”

She took the potatoes and millet from her son, about to say something else, when suddenly there was a burst of chirping.

Hu Cui Lan: “What’s that noise?”

Zhao Ping’an said mysteriously, “A present for you. It’s outside the door, go see for yourself.”

Hu Cui Lan curiously poked her head out the door.

!!

“Chicks?”

“Big meat rabbits?!”

Hu Cui Lan’s face lit up with delight. She ran out in her slippers and scooped up the cardboard box.

“My good son! Did you bring back braised chicken and spicy rabbit heads?”

Zhao Ping’an: “…Don’t be in such a rush to eat them! We need to raise them for a while first. Take it slow, let’s make it last.”

Hu Cui Lan: “I know! Chickens lay eggs, eggs hatch chickens!”

Happily, she took the chicks and rabbits to the spare room next door. “You go rest, I’ll make a home for our new members.”

She fished out the keys as she went, muttering, “Life’s going to be so much richer now…”

Zhao Ping’an watched his mother’s back with a big smile, then went back to moving the rest of the supplies inside.

Unlike the joy and abundance in these two households, An Nan returned home with a calm expression and tossed all her supplies into her space.

She had so much stuff she’d never run out. A little more didn’t make any difference.

Fugui, seeing his owner come home, wagged his tail and bounded over excitedly.

An Nan’s mood finally improved at the sight of her enthusiastic little companion, and she scooped him up for some cuddles.

Once he’d settled down, An Nan took out a roast lamb rib from her space for him to gnaw on.

Then she went to change clothes and wash her hands, and brought out a bowl of luosifen for herself.

The luosifen was steaming hot, just like it was fresh from the shop, with a fried egg soaked in the rich broth.

An Nan found her favorite drama, “Empress Huan,” and happily slurped her noodles.

Fugui, who had been gnawing on his lamb rib at her feet, suddenly caught a whiff of that special smell and stared at her in shock.

What are you eating?!

…Is that poop?!

He shot her a sideways glance, picked up his lamb rib, and quietly moved farther away.

An Nan was speechless at his reaction. “An Fugui! What kind of look is that?”

Fugui turned his back to her and continued gnawing on his lamb rib from a safe distance.

Respect others’ tastes, enjoy your own life.

An Nan: …

You’re a dog, you have no taste! I’m not going to argue with you.

She lowered her head and slurped her noodles even louder.

After eating, the human and the dog snuggled up on the sofa. An Nan fished around in her pocket and put the jade she’d gotten at the market into her space.

Sure enough, it was absorbed again.

She looked down at the jade bracelet on her wrist.

The quality had improved again.

But the space itself didn’t seem to have changed in size—so what exactly had leveled up?

After thinking it over, she decided to go explore the manor properly.

She tried to pick up Fugui.

Tried… and failed.

She hefted Fugui onto her shoulder and slipped into her space.

“Fugui! How did you get so fat?!”

As soon as she entered the space, she quickly set the dog down on the lawn.

She hadn’t paid much attention before, but now she saw that he’d grown a lot!

He was almost twice as long as when she first brought him home. Who knew how much weight he’d gained—there was no way she could pick him up easily like before.

An Nan squeezed his body and found he was solid as a rock.

Other breeds of dogs, with their thick fur, might look round but don’t actually have much meat on them.

But Fugui, being a French Bulldog, had short hair—what you see is what you get. However big he looked, that’s how much meat he had.

What you see is what you get.

An Nan bent down to lecture him, “Fugui, you’re a little girl! You need to eat less, or you’ll turn into a little pig!”

Fugui ignored her, lifted his little head, and went to the pond for a drink.

An Nan: …"
