Chapter 77: Meeting an Acquaintance
Natural Disasters and the End of the World
An Nan sat in the room for a while, but Bai Wenbin still hadn’t returned.
It looked like he really wouldn’t be back until evening.
She walked over to the window and glanced at the unnaturally red sun.
She couldn’t wait any longer. In just over an hour, the temperature would suddenly shoot up from 15°C to 35°C, and keep rising.
She’d left in a hurry and wasn’t wearing her temperature-regulating suit underneath. If she was suddenly exposed to such a drastic change in temperature, it would be hard on her body.
Most importantly, Fugui was still home alone.
His physiology made him one of the dog breeds most prone to heatstroke.
If the temperature spiked and the air conditioning wasn’t on, he’d be in real danger. And right now, there was no way to find a vet.
An Nan made up her mind on the spot: she had to go home first.
As for Bai Wenbin, he could run, but he couldn’t hide.
Besides, with the heatstroke coming, he wouldn’t get far anyway. She could come back and deal with him anytime.
The priority now was to keep her dog safe.
To avoid alerting anyone, she dragged Qian Yinger’s body inside and stored it in her space.
Then she wiped away all traces of herself, cleaning up the blood as well.
She left the supplies in the backpack and suitcase untouched, just as they were.
It would look like Qian Yinger had come here, dropped off her things, and left.
Once everything was tidied up, she grabbed the keys, locked the door, and left. As she went downstairs, she hummed a cheerful tune.
“Today is a good day,
Everything goes my way.
Today is a good day,
Open the door and welcome the spring breeze…”
The two people in apartment 702 couldn’t help but shudder when they suddenly heard the loud singing echoing through the hallway.
Long Cong’an covered his ears: So my beautiful, clever, resourceful, and powerful savior isn’t perfect after all!
Her speaking voice was so charming, but when she sang, she was completely tone-deaf?!
The off-key melody continued to assault their ears.
If it were an unfamiliar song, it wouldn’t be so bad—but it just had to be such a well-known tune.
They knew exactly where the melody should rise, but she just couldn’t hit the notes. When the tune was supposed to be steady, she’d throw in a few unnecessary twists.
Gu Zhiyu couldn’t help but get up from the sofa, raising his slender hand to pinch the bridge of his nose.
For once, a crack appeared in his usually calm expression.
He stood by the window, watching as An Nan walked out the building with a spring in her step.
Finally, the “musical torture” ended.
Downstairs, An Nan’s attention was once again drawn to the imposing black Hummer.
Most girls would probably prefer those sleek, beautiful sports cars.
But she had a special fondness for these rugged, tough off-road vehicles.
Especially in the post-apocalyptic world, this kind of bold, powerful car was even more appealing to her.
She couldn’t resist reaching out to touch it again.
What a sexy beast! Just sitting here, tempting me.
Too bad she didn’t have the keys, or she’d have stashed it in her space like a true bandit.
Thinking of the super cool, over-the-top Knight XV in her space, An Nan’s restless heart finally calmed a little.
It’s fine, my Black Knight could buy five of these.
Can’t be too greedy.
With that thought, she grinned and gave the Hummer’s sturdy rear one last pat before turning to leave.
Upstairs, Gu Zhiyu watched the scene, amusement in his eyes.
He’d only met An Nan twice, but every time, every move she made managed to surprise him.
She never played by the rules, and that only made him more curious.
It was the first time he’d ever seen a woman look at a car with that kind of roguish expression.
He couldn’t help but think of her little dog, drooling over him.
Yep… dogs really do take after their owners.
Watching her walk away, he called out to Long Cong’an:
“Come on, let’s go back.”
…
An Nan, carrying her bayonet, left the complex and walked down the street, feeling more and more irritated.
She’d followed Qian Yinger here step by step, which had taken over an hour.
She wanted to drive back, but the area was full of residential buildings and people. It wouldn’t be easy to just pull a car out of thin air from her space.
So she had no choice but to walk back.
She couldn’t help but think of that impressive Hummer from earlier.
If only she could drive it home.
She was striding forward when suddenly she heard the sound of a car behind her.
The flood had just receded, and most vehicles were still waterlogged, so there were hardly any cars on the road. Instinctively, An Nan turned to look.
And there it was—the very Hummer she’d been thinking about.
The black SUV sped over and slowed to a stop beside her.
The driver’s window rolled down, revealing a familiar face she hadn’t expected.
“Long Cong’an?”
Long Cong’an grinned and greeted her, “Savior! We meet again!”
An Nan was a bit surprised. What were the odds? The car she’d been admiring belonged to someone she knew.
She looked at Long Cong’an and asked, “Is this your car?”
“No way! This is my boss’s car,” Long Cong’an laughed. “Where are you headed, Savior? We can give you a ride.”
We?
An Nan glanced at the back window.
It was closed and pitch-black inside, but she figured it must be that “President Gu” who had charmed her dog Fugui.
What was his name again?
She recalled the handshake and the way his lips moved that day.
Right, Gu Zhiyu.
She replied without hesitation, “Sure! Thanks, I’m going to Maple Grove Residences.”
Only a fool would turn down a ride.
She’d just been wishing she could drive home—walking all that way in the rising heat would be miserable.
It was like someone handing her a pillow just as she was about to fall asleep.
Since Long Cong’an had offered, it must have been with his boss’s permission—otherwise, he wouldn’t have stopped to greet her.
She put away her bayonet and was about to walk around to the front passenger seat when Long Cong’an called out,
“Savior, sit in the back.”
He got out and opened the back door for her.
An Nan looked inside and, sure enough, saw a familiar figure.
The man sat tall and straight, his black trench coat open to reveal a dark gray casual outfit underneath. At a glance, it even matched what she was wearing.
Chiseled features, slender phoenix eyes, sharply defined lips—
Still a face you couldn’t look away from.
An Nan smiled politely. “Hello, Gu Zhiyu. We meet again.”
She’d thought about calling him “President Gu” like Long Cong’an, but last time he’d introduced himself by his full name, and they seemed about the same age.
Besides, she wasn’t his employee or a business partner, so she might as well just use his name.
Gu Zhiyu nodded at her in greeting.
An Nan got in smoothly and sat down next to him."
