Chapter 95: Sun Peng’s Guests

Natural Disasters and the End of the World

The two chatted for a while longer before heading home separately.

An Nan went inside, lay down on her bed, and gazed at the mountain of jewelry piled up in her space, unable to help but sigh.

If this were before the disaster, she’d be considered a major player in her own right.

Almost all the jewelry in the city was now in her space.

Even if she wore a different set every day, she’d never get through it all.

Feeling excited, she used her mind to move the jewelry into the villa’s bathtub and rinsed them with water.

There was a lot of grime stuck to the jewelry, left behind after the floodwaters receded—especially on the patterned gold pieces, where the grooves were all blackened.

After washing, the jewelry finally revealed its original appearance.

They became even more dazzling, shining with golden light.

An Nan looked at the bathtub full of sparkling gold, diamonds, and pearls…

She couldn’t help but think of those treasure-hunting movies she’d seen before.

The protagonists would go through all sorts of hardships, finally finding a cave full of gold and jewels, and then excitedly roll around in their little mountain of treasure.

That so-called treasure cave probably looked just like her space now!

An Nan thought mischievously: should I spread all these jewels and gold out in my bedroom and sleep on top of them?

Every morning when I open my eyes, the whole room would be glittering with gold.

How wonderful!

She glanced around her tiny room.

…Better forget it.

It would feel like hanging world-famous paintings in a shack in the slums.

Besides, sleeping on diamonds would be so uncomfortable—it’d ruin her sleep.

As her mind wandered, she kept moving jewelry into the tub for their “bath.”

She washed one tub after another, who knows how many, before finally drifting off to sleep with a smile on her lips.

Before falling asleep, she sighed:

I really am just an ordinary person in this mortal world.

Big diamonds can’t be eaten, gold bangles can’t be drunk, but they sure make me happy…

1302.

Sun Peng had just stepped through the door, arms full of supplies, when Wang Xiaoyu came to greet him.

“Peng-ge, how’d it go today?”

Seeing him with a bulging backpack and another bag in hand, she beamed and reached out to take the supplies from him.

She laughed, “Looks like you got more today than yesterday!”

But Sun Peng didn’t look pleased.

“The supermarkets out there are pretty much picked clean. I think it’s going to get harder and harder to find anything…”

Wang Xiaoyu didn’t care, carrying the stuff into the house.

“It’s fine, what you’ve found these past couple days is enough to last us a long time.”

Sun Peng rubbed his forehead, not nearly as optimistic as she was.

Sure, what they had now would last them for a while.

But what about when it ran out?

Wang Xiaoyu hadn’t seen what it was like out there, but he had.

There was only so much food and water, and everyone was fighting tooth and nail to grab whatever they could. Supplies were getting scarcer and scarcer—soon, there’d be nothing left to find.

And that wasn’t even the scariest part.

The worst was, the temperature kept rising.

If this extreme heat disaster didn’t end soon, they’d be sweating buckets with nothing to drink.

In the end, they’d die of dehydration.

So right now was a critical time.

If he could stockpile enough supplies now, it’d be like saving up a fortune—more security for the future.

But if they just sat around and used up what they had, they’d only get more and more desperate.

He looked at Wang Xiaoyu in the kitchen, sorting through the supplies, a shadow passing over his face.

This woman really didn’t want to lift a finger—just wanted to reap without sowing.

If she’d gone out with him these past two days, they could’ve brought back twice as much food and water.

But instead, she played dumb and acted all cutesy, insisting on staying home and waiting for a free meal.

How much could he carry by himself?

And then the two of them had to share it.

In this respect, she was nothing like his wife.

Back then, most of the money at home was earned by his wife—he never had to worry about a thing.

Wang Xiaoyu was different; all she thought about was squeezing him dry.

Back during the flood, things were still manageable, so he let her be. But now, things were clearly getting worse—he couldn’t let her keep lazing around!

Sun Peng cleared his throat. “Xiaoyu, we’re having two guests over tonight.”

Wang Xiaoyu turned and asked, “What kind of guests? Do I need to make food?”

She looked a little reluctant. “We don’t have much left at home…”

Sun Peng said, “No need. They’re friends I met while scavenging last night—they’re coming to bring us some stuff.”

Wang Xiaoyu’s eyes lit up. “Bringing us stuff? Peng-ge, you’re amazing! I knew sticking with you was the right choice!”

Sun Peng smiled. “Then hurry up and get your big brother something to eat! I need a good sleep after a whole night of scavenging—I’m exhausted!”

“Okay!” Wang Xiaoyu immediately opened a pack of crackers and handed it to him.

As Sun Peng took the crackers, he pinched her pretty cheek.

“You really are a looker! Even after losing so much weight, you’re still easy on the eyes. Not like those walking skeletons outside—you can’t even tell if they’re men or women.”

Wang Xiaoyu shot him a proud look. “If I wasn’t good-looking, you wouldn’t have wanted me~”

She thought to herself: It’s only because of this pretty face that he betrayed his wife to hook up with me!

After eating, the two of them went to the bedroom to sleep.

Now, daytime temperatures stayed above fifty degrees Celsius—so hot you didn’t dare move a muscle in bed.

Even sleeping, you’d be drenched in sweat, unable to rest properly.

Sun Peng tossed and turned, unable to sleep from the heat, but forced himself to rest with his eyes closed.

Only after the sun went down did he finally open his eyes.

He glanced at Wang Xiaoyu, who was sleeping soundly beside him.

He got out of bed quietly and went to the kitchen to hide all their supplies.

He didn’t want their guests to see what they had and get any ideas about robbing them.

He stashed away all the food and water, leaving only a few packs of crackers out in the open.

Then he found two knives—one tucked into his waistband, the other hidden in the sofa cushions.

Finally, he hid scissors, screwdrivers, and other makeshift weapons in every concealed corner of the house.

That way, no matter where he was, he could catch someone off guard and strike a deadly blow.

Once everything was ready, he sat calmly on the sofa, waiting for his guests.

Before long, there was a knock at the door.

Sun Peng peered through the peephole, confirmed it was the people he’d arranged to meet, and opened the door.

“Come in, come in!”

Three people stood outside. The man in front smiled and greeted Sun Peng:

“We brought an extra friend along, hope you don’t mind?”

Sun Peng glanced at what they were carrying, then smiled:

“Of course I don’t mind! Didn’t we agree you’d introduce me to more people? The more, the merrier.”

He pointed toward the bedroom. “She’s inside—go on in!”

The three exchanged glances, put down their things, and entered the apartment with anticipation.

Soon, Wang Xiaoyu’s startled cry came from inside:

“What are you doing?!”"
