Chapter 46: Chapter 46: The Most Delicious Meat I’ve Ever Eaten
Reborn in the 1980s Becoming the Group's Darling Little Lucky Treasure
Looking at the basket overflowing with groundcherries, Yu Hai grinned from ear to ear. “Mom, we should be able to make quite a bit of money this time, right?”
Xu Shuhua nodded. “Don’t just stand there grinning. Hurry up and chop up all these branches and leaves, spread them out a bit.”
Destroying the evidence was still important.
Yu Hai understood how crucial this was and didn’t dare waste a second. He pulled the hatchet from his waist and chopped the branches and leaves into tiny pieces.
“If I’d known, I would’ve brought a shovel or spade. We could’ve buried them right away,” Yu Hai said a little regretfully.
Xu Shuhua glanced over and didn’t think it was necessary.
This whole area was covered in wild grass—so thick you couldn’t even see your feet.
Once the branches and leaves were chopped up and scattered, no one would notice a thing.
If they actually dug a hole to bury them, and someone saw the freshly turned earth, that would be even more suspicious.
“All right, let’s go home! It’s getting dark, and there’ll be even more mosquitoes. If we stay any longer, they’ll start biting Nuanbao!”
They’d already spent twenty minutes here, and the sky was getting dark. They could barely make out their surroundings.
Luckily, they hadn’t gone too deep into the wilds, so they quickly retraced their steps and headed back.
By the time they got home, Chen Qiaoqin and the others had already finished making dinner. They were just starting to wonder why Xu Shuhua and Yu Hai weren’t back yet and whether they should go out to look for them, when the two of them walked in, one after the other.
Xu Shuhua handed Yu Nuannuan to Chen Qiaoqin. “I think groundcherries sell pretty well, so I took Hai and picked another big basketful. We’ll take them to the county early tomorrow to sell.”
The rest of the Yu family instinctively turned to look at Yu Hai.
Yu Hai set the basket down on the floor so everyone could see.
It was packed full—nothing but groundcherries.
While the adults were still in shock, Yu Wei and the other boys cheered and rushed over. “Uncle Hai, can we eat some?”
Yu Hai chuckled and ruffled Yu Wei’s hair. “You can! But only after dinner! We’re having meat tonight—if you fill up on groundcherries, will you have any room left for meat?”
Groundcherries were always available, but meat was a rare treat. Even the youngest, Yu Gang, didn’t need to think twice about which to choose.
Yu Wei led his brothers back to the table and sat down obediently, waiting for dinner.
Once Xu Shuhua and Yu Hai had washed up and returned, the whole family finally started eating.
They’d just had stewed meat a couple of times recently, so this time, everyone wasn’t quite as desperate, though their chopsticks still moved fast when it came to the meat.
Tonight’s dish was braised pork with potatoes. After the meat was divided up, the potatoes and sauce, soaked with the flavor of the meat, were a real treat too.
As they ate, Yu Jiang commented, “You know, after not having meat for half a year, that first bite is always the best. That eggplant and pork stew we had the other night—now that was amazing! So delicious it made my teeth ache!”
Xu Shuhua shot Yu Jiang a look. “Even eating meat can’t keep your mouth shut? How many times have we had meat now? And you’re already saying it’s not as tasty?”
Yu Jiang hurried to explain, “No, no! I’m not saying it’s not good. I just mean that stew that night was especially delicious! It’s the best meat I’ve ever had, and the eggplant too!”
Everyone in the Yu family agreed, even Yu Wei chimed in seriously, “Grandma, I think Dad’s right. That eggplant and pork stew was really special—way tastier than tonight’s. A hundred times better!”
Of course Xu Shuhua knew that stew was more delicious than tonight’s meat.
And she knew exactly why.
But could she say it out loud?
