Chapter 140: Trivial Matters, Acting as a Health Doctor
Restarting the Farm in the Apocalypse
Behind her, “Brother Sun” laughed heartily. “Why would I need a wood-type ability user? Who could possibly hurt me?”
“Of course Brother Sun is wise and mighty, but it’s always good to be careful. If you had a top-tier wood-type by your side when you go out, I’d feel a lot more at ease.”
“Haha, I’ll listen to you. Having someone as thoughtful as you by my side is truly a blessing I must have earned in a past life.”
Wen Mingli blushed and leaned on Sun Buqun’s shoulder. “Being able to return to your side, Brother Sun, is just as much a blessing for me.” She glanced at the time. “Oh, it’s so late already. I should get going.”
Sun Buqun’s face darkened in displeasure. “Why go back? That Zhu Yunhua kid—no one wants him, he’s got no talent, what future could he possibly have? Not only do you have to run around with him and tire yourself out, it’s a complete waste of time. Now that Bian Changxi can’t possibly end up with him, you don’t need to go back. Just stay here.”
His words warmed Wen Mingli’s heart, but she still said, “I can’t just yet. I want to see how far Bian Changxi can go, and whether she can get the bracelet back. She seems to be getting suspicious of me. If I act strangely now, she’ll figure me out in no time. There’s no need to invite unnecessary trouble.”
“Speaking of suspicion, do you think Gu Xu spread the news about the Five-Colored Grass because he suspects someone is trying to use it for something?” she suddenly asked. “After all, we had those people secretly buying and collecting it. We’ve kept our hands clean, but those people didn’t cover their tracks well—it’s not hard to see something’s up.”
“Exactly. That’s why we can’t rush. He’s definitely watching in secret to see who makes a move—whoever does is the traitor. Looks like we’ll have to give up on the Five-Colored Grass.”
“That’s all we can do.”
Suddenly, Sun Buqun narrowed his eyes and picked up the binoculars, looking in a certain direction. “That person…”
Wen Mingli followed his gaze. There were quite a few people below. “Brother Sun, who is it?”
“An old acquaintance. I didn’t expect him to get out of prison.” Sun Buqun muttered. Down on the street, a burly, bald man nearly two meters tall was walking toward his residence with a grim face. After searching all day, Sun Buqun hadn’t even found a single hair of his target. How could that be acceptable? If he couldn’t find that bastard, what was the point of all the trouble he’d gone through to come to this base?
Frustrated and anxious, he clenched his fist and slammed it into the wall, leaving a deep dent. The passersby nearby jumped in shock, looking at him with fear and quickly detouring around him.
Guangtou Qiang pursed his lips and walked home in silence.
Meanwhile, Bian Changxi and Qiu Feng had decided to draw a little of Shadow’s blood and mix it with the Five-Colored Grass juice for testing, to figure out the right ratio, and then calculate a rough dosage. After working most of the afternoon and into the night, they finally reached a conclusion. Qiu Yun, who had been watching anxiously, said excitedly, “So we’ll go with the medicinal bath treatment? We just add this many drops of Five-Colored Grass juice to the bathwater? Should we start now?”
Bian Changxi asked, “How is Shadow doing?”
“About the same as before, no change since we stopped the medicine during the day.”
“I’ll go check again.” Bian Changxi carefully examined Shadow and saw that the green toxin spots in his body were calm, so she agreed to start the bath right away. The sooner they started, the sooner Shadow could recover.
They put Shadow in a large tub, and after about ten minutes, the water started to lighten in color. Faint green threads seeped into his body, and after a while, dirty, blackish water oozed out, tinting the bathwater a murky gray.
During the process, Shadow didn’t have any severe reactions.
Everyone was encouraged. This meant the treatment was working. Bian Changxi felt Shadow’s hand and smiled wryly. “There’s almost no change. Maybe too little has been expelled so far.”
Qiu Feng was optimistic. “Little by little adds up. As long as it’s not like before, when nothing came out at all, it’s progress.”
After settling Shadow, everyone was exhausted. The tension had worn them out, especially Qiu Feng and Qiu Yun, who had traveled far to the snake den to gather herbs—it had taken a lot out of them. Just as they were about to rest, someone arrived. Aunt Zhao came in with a woman who looked spirited but haggard. “Deputy Qiu, Miss Bian, Miss Su is here.”
Su Chensi looked serious and stern in front of everyone, but when she saw Wu Dalang, she seemed a bit emotional and bowed. “Sorry, I said I’d come as soon as it got dark, but there were too many people at home and I couldn’t get away until now. Is Mr. Wu’s leg any better?”
Wu Dalang nodded awkwardly and had Anan wheel him back to his room. Su Chensi’s face fell, and everyone noticed but said nothing.
Bian Changxi stepped forward. “Actually, I’m the one who wanted to see you this time. How about we sit outside in the pavilion?”
Su Chensi replied sincerely, “It would be my honor.”
Bian Changxi talked with her for a long time, explaining Wu Dalang’s condition and her own thoughts. When Su Chensi heard that Wu Dalang’s bone had healed crookedly and would need to be broken again, the usually composed girl gasped, “It’s that serious?” She frowned in thought for a long while, then looked up. “If you really have to break it again, how will you do it?”
Bian Changxi said, “The new cut has to line up perfectly with the old wound, otherwise the crooked part will stay crooked and it’s pointless. It also has to be extremely neat—you can’t just snap it. The damage must be minimal. Wu Dalang’s leg is already badly injured and can’t take any more trauma. I was thinking of using an ability—probably a wind blade from a wind-type user.”
Su Chensi was silent for a moment, then said, “Can I do it instead?” She seemed eager to explain. “First, I was the one who caused the injury in the first place, so I know exactly where the damage is. Repeating the cut exactly would be easy for me. Second, if you want a clean cut, a spatial blade is far superior to a wind blade. Third…” Her voice dropped, a little uncertain. “I’ve improved lately. My spatial blade can be made very thin now—maybe not quite as thin as a hair, but close. Do you think I could do it?”
Bian Changxi looked at her, lost in thought.
Su Chensi was indeed from the Su family, and reportedly a cousin to Su Tiande, the most outstanding of the younger generation. She was a bit older, her ability was strong, and she was highly valued. Because she had injured Wu Dalang before, she felt deeply guilty and used to visit every day when she first arrived at the base, bringing lots of supplements (which were never accepted).
The Su family’s dislike for Gu Xu and the others was partly because of this.
If your own relative sides with outsiders, how could you possibly like those outsiders?
In terms of character, Su Chensi was decent. Otherwise, she wouldn’t have felt so guilty after injuring Wu Dalang and Gu Xu on orders. She didn’t need to fake it—her concern and remorse were genuine.
In terms of strength, as a spatial-type user, she had a large space and could already use spatial blades early on—definitely a top-tier talent. It was much better to befriend someone like her than to make an enemy.
As for using a spatial blade to treat the wound, if Su Chensi was telling the truth and had those two advantages, it was worth a try.
After a while, Bian Changxi said, “I can’t decide this. We’ll have to ask Gu Xu and Wu Dalang themselves.”
“I’ll go talk to them.” She stood up hurriedly.
Bian Changxi raised a hand to stop her. “No rush. We’re not breaking his leg right now anyway. Let’s talk to Gu Xu first. If you go straight to Wu Dalang, he’ll probably refuse.”
It was better to let Gu Xu get a read on Su Chensi first—to see if she was sincere or just putting on an act, and to weigh the pros and cons of accepting or refusing her help.
Gu Xu had sharp eyes and a keen mind—this was a job for him.
Bian Changxi’s eyes sparkled slightly. If Gu Xu agreed, Su Chensi’s relationship with the villa would become closer, and she could try something else she had in mind.
She saw Su Chensi out. Since Su Chensi had snuck out alone and could teleport, there was no need to escort her. Watching her disappear into the night, Bian Changxi turned back to look at the various equipment and the animal skins, meat, and bones marked with spatial blade scars, and sighed—more experiments to do.
The main reason for inviting Su Chensi was to get these samples. She needed to experiment on how to most effectively heal the holes left by spatial blades. Although she had healed Gu Xu’s chest wound before, the circumstances were different—different person, different injury, different timing. Wu Dalang’s wound ran the length of his leg bone, so she had to be much more careful.
Gu Xu didn’t object to this. The next day, he met with Su Chensi himself, and when he came back, he nodded in agreement. But that’s another story. That night, he came back very late, after midnight. At that time, Bian Changxi was still lying on the balcony, gazing at the dark, starry sky, lost in thought. The moment he walked in, she noticed.
They looked at each other across the distance. Gu Xu entered, and she seemed to hear him say something to someone, then the sound of footsteps upstairs.
Bian Changxi ran to open the door and waited for him. Looking at his face, she asked, “You’re back so late. Did everything go smoothly?”
Gu Xu’s clothes were still tidy, but the small bag he’d taken at noon was gone. He was carrying a thermos, obviously from the kitchen, filled with red date porridge—his late-night snack. He nodded. “It went fine. The things in the Jiandai Tunnel have been cleared out.”
“What about the people inside?”
Gu Xu hesitated. “They were turned into dried corpses—dead, all over the mountains.”
Bian Changxi was stunned. “All dead?”
“All dead.” Gu Xu was worried she’d take it hard. “Don’t dwell on it. In that situation, you could barely protect yourself—how could you have saved anyone else?”
Bian Changxi sighed. “The monsters these days are getting stranger and stranger.” She walked over and tapped her chin. “Give me your hand.”
Gu Xu smiled and obediently held out his hand, palm up, covered in scars of all sizes. “Is this what you were waiting up for?”
Bian Changxi didn’t answer. She took his hand and frowned. “Injured again… I live here, use your things, eat your food—I should at least be responsible. Acting as your part-time health doctor isn’t too much to ask, is it?”
ps:
That’s it, I can’t go on. Staying up for three chapters is just too painful!"
