Chapter 43: Confession, the Space Is Exposed

Restarting the Farm in the Apocalypse

Qiu Feng approached Lin Rongrong again, probing, “You and Miss Bian are classmates, right? Why are there only the two of you together? Where are the others?”

Lin Rongrong snorted, “The others are all trash. Changxi is great—she’s worth a whole group of people by herself!” She paused. “But honestly, I haven’t known her that long—just about an hour longer than I’ve known you all.”

Qiu Feng was quite surprised, so Lin Rongrong recounted how she met Bian Changxi and how Changxi helped her kill a Tier 2 zombie. Although Lin Rongrong wasn’t very capable herself, she was never stingy with her admiration or gratitude when it was due. She could also tell that Bian Changxi was a good person at heart.

For example, when they first saw the Tier 2 zombie, Changxi could have just turned and run, but she didn’t—even though she was outmatched, she still charged in right away. She could have kept the Tier 2 green core for herself, but insisted on splitting it evenly. They were strangers, and Lin Rongrong was basically useless—the only thing she had was her spatial ability, which Changxi didn’t seem to care much about. When they went to the supermarket, Changxi could have left her behind, but she didn’t. Not only did she bring Lin Rongrong along, but she never showed the slightest bit of disdain or impatience.

She might seem cold and aloof on the outside, but she’s a good person—so much better than those two-faced types who smile at you and stab you in the back.

As Lin Rongrong sighed, she shared all this with Qiu Feng. He nodded silently in agreement, but in his heart, he thought differently. People have many sides; maybe what you see as kindness is just someone not bothering to argue. But if she ever does care enough to argue, who knows what will happen?

Just then, a car came driving down the road.

“They’re back! They’re back!”

The people waiting cheered. As soon as the car stopped, before anyone could rush up to greet their loved ones, people started tumbling out of the car, clutching their stomachs and vomiting. The sight shocked everyone.

Bian Changxi got out from the passenger seat, her legs still a bit shaky. Under the blazing sun, she shook her head and instinctively reached for the car door—only to find her hand covered in sticky, rotten goo. The whole car was smeared with bits of zombie flesh that had been slapped on and scraped off; the vehicle looked like it had just escaped a heap of corpses in hell.

She stared at the filth on her hand, surrounded by the sounds of retching, and suddenly felt her own stomach churning.

Lin Rongrong ran out from the convenience store. “Changxi, you’re finally back! Are you okay?”

Gu Xu got out from the driver’s seat and said to her, “There were too many zombies. We had to drive like maniacs. Take her inside to rest.” He turned to Qiu Yun and the others, telling them to look after the rest of the group, then walked off with Qiu Feng, talking as they went. “How did it go?”

“Two dead, two wounded—looks like they won’t make it either. But their families are making a scene…” Qiu Feng nodded toward Bian Changxi’s back.

Lin Rongrong led Bian Changxi into the convenience store. This gas station was the same one Bian Changxi had come to yesterday morning to steal fuel from a tanker. From here, they could get straight onto the highway to the new development zone, which was why she’d suggested everyone retreat here.

Naturally, the convenience store had already been picked clean by Liu Meng’s people, so it was a bit empty inside. But it was much cooler than outside. She saw that Shadow, still unconscious, had been laid out on some cardboard and car seat cushions. Lin Rongrong quickly took an unopened bottle of water from her bag, wet a clean towel, and handed it to Bian Changxi. “You’re sweating buckets—wipe yourself off.” She also took out a comb to tidy Changxi’s messy short hair.

Bian Changxi felt a little awkward, but she was truly exhausted. Ten people crammed into one car, speeding for their lives—she’d nearly passed out from lack of air.

She plopped down on the floor, wiped her flushed face, cleaned the filth from her hands, and took a sip of water to soothe her parched throat. “How long have you guys been here?”

“Not long—about twenty minutes.” Lin Rongrong sat beside her. “But there’s something you should know. There are two people in the staff dorm who were bitten by zombies. I went to see them—they’re basically zombies already. But their families are insisting on waiting for you to heal them, refusing to let Qiu Feng shoot them. Qiu Yun got so mad she pulled her people out and said to ignore them. Changxi, can you help?”

Bian Changxi replied, “I’m not a miracle worker. You said yourself—they’re basically zombies already. What can I do? Saving Shadow was just dumb luck, and look—he’s still not awake.” She shook her head. She had no experience or skill in this area. But that’s how people are—once you do something impressive and unique, they latch onto you. She didn’t care about the resentment from the injured people’s families, but the hassle was annoying.

Like now—she hadn’t even caught her breath when a figure in red pushed open the convenience store door, looking down at her. “Miss Bian, savior doctor—there are people waiting for your mercy. Aren’t you going to help?”

Bian Changxi shot Yang Xiaowen a cold glance, along with the few survivors peeking in behind her, and contacted Gu Xu through her earpiece: “…Captain Gu, I’m not capable of helping those injured people… Okay, got it.”

She looked up at the people behind Yang Xiaowen and said, “Captain Gu says we’re leaving for the new development zone in ten minutes. If you want to come, go get ready.”

Hearing this, the crowd lost interest in the drama and quickly dispersed—after all, there were three people in the dorm about to turn into zombies, so most people were resting over by the fast-food restaurant.

Seeing the people she’d rallied scatter, Yang Xiaowen stomped her foot and demanded, “You’re not helping because you can’t, right? You just don’t have the ability!”

“What’s it to you?” Lin Rongrong shot back, shooing her out. “Don’t block the door—you’re letting all the heat in.”

She propped the door shut, grumbling, “That woman is so annoying. When we were breaking out, she didn’t do anything but scream—my eardrums almost burst. But Changxi, you should be careful. I get the feeling she’s targeting you. And those guys with her—Leopard Bro and Big Bro—they were just trying to fish for information about you earlier. But I didn’t say anything.”

Bian Changxi thought to herself, Of course she’s targeting me—she’s petty as a needle’s tip and holds grudges. Not that I’m much better. As for Leopard Bro and Yang Zong, they probably want to see what I’m really capable of. Maybe the injured people’s families are making a fuss because they put them up to it, just to force me to show my hand.

“Did anyone else ask about me?”

“Qiu Feng did.”

“Him?”

“They don’t seem to understand why Captain Gu left you alone in the supermarket.” Lin Rongrong grinned. “So, why did Captain Gu leave you there?”

Bian Changxi’s face darkened slightly. She glanced at the unmoving Shadow. “What did you tell Qiu Feng?”

Lin Rongrong saw her serious expression and her heart skipped a beat. She quickly shook her head. “Nothing much—I just told him how we met and about killing the Tier 2 zombie. He didn’t react much, and then you guys came back.”

Bian Changxi thought for a moment, then pulled Lin Rongrong outside. Making sure no one was around, she lowered her voice and said, “The space has been exposed.”
