Chapter 140: Live Breeding""?
Returning to Before the Apocalypse, I Emptied the World's Supplies
Everyone was filled with mixed emotions.
Jiang Yan pulled herself out of her thoughts and shot Dao Yinping a cold look. “Why does he want so many children? And you still haven’t explained what’s going on with the 22nd floor!”
“I—I don’t know exactly. I think it’s to screen the kids, then train them or use them for research or something. Those mutant leeches… the stuff you can extract from them is supposed to have special effects, so he wants them too. And he wants them big.
We couldn’t catch that many, so we came up with the idea of live breeding.” Dao Yinping finished, looking uneasy, and stole a cautious glance at the stool beside him.
Live breeding?!!
No wonder there were so many corpses and leech egg cocoons in the room.
Even though Jiang Yan had already guessed most of it, she still couldn’t help but suck in a cold breath.
Such a deranged thing, yet Dao Yinping described it as calmly as if he were raising chickens or ducks.
And there wasn’t a hint of fear or remorse on his face. It was easy to imagine just how brazen they usually were.
Sun Jingtao had never been to the 22nd floor, but he’d already heard about the horrors down there from Ye Qing’s description.
Now, hearing such shameless words, even the usually calm and steady Sun Jingtao felt a rush of hot blood surge to his head, breaking through his composure:
“If I don’t wipe out Ma Longbiao and his gang in this lifetime, I, Sun Jingtao, am not worthy to be called a man!”
If you keep swallowing your anger and only care about self-preservation when others are already at your doorstep, the end result is that everyone will be doomed together.
So, to hell with self-preservation and running away!
Dao Yinping, afraid Sun Jingtao would take it out on him, quickly shuffled a few steps to the side.
Sun Jingtao’s fists and glare were indeed aimed at him, but remembering that Jiang Yan hadn’t finished questioning him, he gritted his teeth until they creaked and slammed a heavy fist onto the sofa.
Tian Jiliang sighed. “Xiao Sun, I don’t mean to rain on your parade, but they’ve got weapons, they’re cunning and ruthless—it’s not that easy to deal with them. Besides, in times like these, it’s hard enough just to protect ourselves, let alone take them all out.”
His words sounded ordinary, but in truth, he was fanning the flames a bit.
After all, with the world outside now a vast ocean, there was nowhere for them to go.
All they could do was risk everything to defend their home, drive the bad guys out of the community, and maybe there’d be a sliver of hope left.
Of course, he actually wanted to lead the charge himself, but his crippled body just wouldn’t allow it.
Sun Jingtao heard the goading in his words, but didn’t bother to argue. He just said, “There’s always a way!”
He was angry, but he wasn’t reckless.
He remembered that time on a mission, when he’d taken on more than a dozen thugs by himself.
If it really came down to facing Ma Longbiao’s gang alone, it wasn’t like he had no chance.
And now, he had Ye Qing by his side.
As for Jiang Yan, who had a gun…
He wasn’t so sure about her.
“What’s going on? What happened?” Su Dai, hearing her husband’s stomping and shouting from the bedroom, rushed out in a panic, still clutching her binoculars.
It was pouring outside, and Dao Yinping’s voice was shaky and not very loud.
She’d been focused on watching out the window and could only make out a few voices, not what they were saying.
“It’s nothing.” The equally fierce Ye Qing took a deep breath and changed the subject. “Dai-jie, did you see anything outside?”
He hadn’t told Su Dai about the hundreds of corpses on the 22nd floor.
She’d been glued to the window in the bedroom, keeping watch, not leaving for a moment.
“No, the rain’s really heavy today, and it got dark earlier than usual. I don’t think they’ll be coming back. Oh, and the water level outside is almost up to the waistline of the 22nd floor.”
The others sighed silently at her words, saying nothing.
The rain kept pouring, and it was only a matter of time before the water rose even higher.
The disasters alone were already making survival nearly impossible, and now there was Ma Longbiao’s gang causing havoc on top of that…
At least they weren’t around today.
Otherwise, who knows how many desperate families would have fallen for their tricks.
Sun Jingtao had calmed down by now. He glanced at Su Dai and said, “Honey, why don’t you turn on the light?”
Because she’d been holding the binoculars to her face for so long, there were two very obvious rings around her eyes.
“Oh, right.” Su Dai finally realized how dark it had gotten in the room.
Everyone had been busy today, and no one had gotten around to lighting the stove.
The living room was cold and drafty.
There was also a faint smell of blood.
Some from Tian Jiliang, some from Dao Yinping, and some from Ye Qing’s pant legs.
Ye Qing’s pants were soaked with blood, but he’d been too busy telling Sun Jingtao about what he’d found downstairs to change.
Su Dai struck a match and lit the alcohol lamp.
Jiang Yan looked at the dim light in the room and felt as if she’d traveled back to her parents’ era.
She had plenty of powerful spotlights and lamps in her space, but unfortunately, there was no good reason to take them out.
Dim was fine; her eyes would adjust eventually.
“Bang bang bang—” The door was knocked at that moment.
Ye Qing turned and quickly walked to the door, checked the peephole, then opened it with a creak.
“Brother Liu.” Ye Qing let him in.
The newcomer was a thin, average-height man.
He was carrying two large bags, nodded slightly to Ye Qing, and entered with a serious expression.
“Old Liu.” Sun Jingtao stood up when he saw who it was.
The man glanced at Jiang Yan and Dao Yinping, a flash of surprise and fear in his eyes, but after greeting everyone, he turned to Sun Jingtao and got straight to the point:
“Xiao Sun, these are the supplies we divided up downstairs. I saved a bit for you guys too, since you helped us get them back. And since Jiang—Miss Jiang is here, I’ll just leave them here.” As he spoke, Old Liu set the two big plastic bags on the dining table.
Jiang Yan glanced over. It was a pile of instant noodles in buckets, all kinds of flavors.
Sun Jingtao and the others weren’t exactly short on supplies, but of course they couldn’t say that, so they just said, “Thanks.”
“Also, I came up to ask your opinion: the supplies in 2901, we kept a small portion for emergencies, and divided the rest among the families upstairs.
The people downstairs have been eating mutant leech meat all this time. Aside from those who attacked us, we gave the rest of the residents a little bit too.
Now I want to ask, the knives and other makeshift weapons we collected—should we give them back to these residents as well?”
Jiang Yan was taken aback. She hadn’t expected him to be so clueless.
This was not the time to repay evil with kindness.
Tian Jiliang pushed up his glasses with his uninjured hand and said,
“Just give them out. When Ma Longbiao’s gang comes back, at least the residents will have weapons and can help hold them off for a while. What do you think, Xiao Sun? After all, you guys were the ones who got the supplies back.
How to handle it is up to you…”"
