Chapter 139: Compensation Required

Returning to the 1980s

As soon as Chu Xuan walked out of the hospital, she sensed that someone was watching her.

She couldn’t help but curse inwardly. Are pickpockets’ eyes really that sharp? Can they tell at a glance that she’s carrying a lot of cash?

She glanced down at her pants pocket—it was bulging.

Lucky she hadn’t been robbed on the way here.

She’d better listen to Mu Chenze and deposit the money at the bank!

Chu Xuan quickened her pace toward the bank.

The person following her grew anxious when he realized she was heading to deposit her money.

He decided to take a risk.

Rob her!

When Chu Xuan reached a quieter spot, a skinny man ran toward her.

She dodged him, though not very nimbly.

At the same time, she saw the knife in his hand.

He didn’t stab her, but tried to slash at her pocket.

He failed.

He didn’t try a second time. Instead, he dashed into a deserted alley. By the time Chu Xuan chased after him, he had already climbed over a wall and escaped.

It was the first time Chu Xuan had seen someone scale a wall and flee so deftly.

If this guy ever tried to steal from Feng Chunhua, even if he didn’t succeed, he’d probably still get away unscathed.

An idea formed in Chu Xuan’s mind.

But first, she needed to talk to Feng Jun about compensation before anything else.

She decided not to go to the bank for now. Once the compensation matter was settled, she could use her bulging pocket as bait for pickpockets.

About ten minutes later, Chu Xuan arrived at the security office.

She happened to run into Wei Qiang.

After explaining the situation, Wei Qiang led her into a meeting room.

Feng Jun, Qin Mahua, and the others were in the middle of negotiating compensation.

They sat across from each other at a table.

Feng Jun looked resolute. “I won’t pay a cent over five hundred!”

Qin Mahua slammed the table. “If it’s less than two thousand eight hundred, this isn’t over!”

Feng Jun acted shamelessly. “It wasn’t me who beat up Mu Chenze! It was my brother, and he’s got mental issues. If you want to sue him, go ahead. You won’t get a penny out of it!”

Fu Qing spotted Chu Xuan and immediately stood up. “Xiao Xuan, you’re here! Come sit next to me.”

Seeing Chu Xuan was like finding their backbone.

Feng Jun didn’t recognize Chu Xuan, but seeing her imposing presence, he couldn’t help but lose some of his bluster.

“Who are you? I don’t remember there being another woman in the Mu family. If you’re not a Mu, you’d better stay out of this.”

Qin Mahua and Fu Qing both snapped at once, “Feng Jun, shut up!”

Chu Xuan sat down next to Fu Qing. “I’m not a Mu, but I’m Mu Chenze’s boss! He works for me, so of course I’m involved! Two thousand eight hundred is too little for compensation! Three thousand, not a cent less! Medical expenses are extra!”

Feng Jun looked at Chu Xuan as if she were crazy.

Qin Mahua and Fu Qing were stunned, too. Honestly, anything over two thousand would have been enough.

But they couldn’t say that now.

Wei Qiang was curious to see if Chu Xuan could actually get three thousand in compensation, so he sat by and waited patiently.

Feng Jun finally came to his senses. “Three thousand? Don’t even think about it! Not happening! I won’t even give you three hundred! Go ahead and sue my brother! Lock him up, and I’ll save myself the trouble of cooking for him. And forget about medical expenses!”

He made as if to get up and leave.

Chu Xuan smiled calmly. “You know Niu Ping, don’t you?”

Feng Jun stopped in his tracks.

Of course he knew Niu Ping.

Niu Ping was his lover in the county.

He looked at Chu Xuan, trying to read her expression.

Chu Xuan’s face was calm, making Feng Jun think she was bluffing.

“I don’t know her!” he denied flatly.

Chu Xuan had expected this.

She picked up a pen and paper from the table, quickly wrote a line, and slid it over to Feng Jun.

After reading it, Feng Jun hurriedly tore off the note and stuffed it into his pocket, planning to burn it later.

That secret could never get out.

Otherwise, he’d be finished.

He had no choice but to change his tune. “I’ll pay three thousand! Medical expenses are extra.”

He walked over to Chu Xuan and whispered, “You have to keep this secret for me.”

Chu Xuan replied quietly, “I promise. But if your own carelessness gets you exposed, don’t blame me.”

Feng Jun grunted in agreement.

Wei Qiang hadn’t seen what was written on the note and planned to ask Chu Xuan about it later.

Fu Qing and Qin Mahua were shocked, looking at Chu Xuan as if to ask, Is this for real?

Chu Xuan nodded at them. “Auntie Qin, just wait to count the money.”

Then she turned to Feng Jun, her tone cold. “Call your family and have them bring the money over right now.”

Feng Jun forced a smile. “No need to call. I’ve got the payment money on me—exactly three thousand.”

He pulled three stacks of cash from his pocket and set them in front of Qin Mahua.

Chu Xuan reminded Qin Mahua and Fu Qing to count the money.

With the compensation settled, Wei Qiang could proceed with the paperwork—signing where needed and closing the case.

When Qin Mahua and Fu Qing left the security office, they were still in a daze.

After all their arguing, they hadn’t managed to get compensation, but Chu Xuan had settled it in under two minutes.

Thinking back to how Chu Xuan had helped Mu Chenze avoid being set up before, they were even more convinced that Chu Xuan was Mu Chenze’s lucky star.

Chu Xuan didn’t leave with them.

Wei Qiang had called her back.

They wanted to wait for her, but Chu Xuan said she still had things to discuss with Wei Qiang and told them not to wait.

Wei Qiang invited Chu Xuan to his office.

Before he could ask, Chu Xuan spoke up. “Feng Jun agreed to pay three thousand because I know one of his secrets. As for what it is, I promised not to say. But you’ll find out soon enough—he’ll expose himself.”

Wei Qiang didn’t press further.

Chu Xuan took her leave.

Wei Qiang watched her go before looking away.

He knew Chu Xuan wasn’t really Mu Chenze’s boss, but since she was willing to stand up for him, their relationship must be close.

The thought left him with mixed feelings…

After leaving the security office, Chu Xuan was followed by Feng Jun.

With no one else around, he got straight to the point. “Chu Xuan, who told you about that?”

Chu Xuan sneered. “If you don’t want people to know, don’t do it in the first place. I won’t tell anyone that Niu Ping’s son is actually your biological child. But from now on, you’re not to compete with Mu Chenze for business, and no price wars. Otherwise—you know what’ll happen.”

“Got it.”

Feng Jun wished he could kill Chu Xuan.

He needed to have a serious talk with Niu Ping.

Without another word, he left.

Chu Xuan didn’t go back to the hospital. Instead, she wandered around crowded places.

She wanted to find that pickpocket.

She had a business proposition for him.

But after several rounds, she didn’t see him again.

With other matters to attend to, she decided to look for him another day.

When Chu Xuan arrived at Mu Chenze’s hospital room, only Qin Mahua was there.

She learned that Fu Qing had already returned to the village.

Qin Mahua had just heard from her son that Chu Xuan had brought all her savings to help pay his medical bills.

She was deeply grateful to Chu Xuan.

Mu Chenze also heard from his mother that without Chu Xuan, they never would have gotten three thousand in compensation.

The Mu family owed Chu Xuan another favor.

Qin Mahua warmly grasped Chu Xuan’s hand, expressing her thanks.

Chu Xuan felt a bit overwhelmed and quickly changed the subject. “Who’s staying with Mu Chenze tonight?”

Qin Mahua looked at Mu Chenze. “Xiao Ze, should I stay, or should your big brother come?”

Mu Chenze, looking a bit tired, waved his hand. “No need. Other than being dizzy, I’m fine. Mom, you should go home! Treat these days as a little vacation. Oh, and in the payment I gave you, there’s 320 yuan for Chu Xuan. Make sure she gets it. Chu Xuan has other things to do and won’t be going back with you.”

Qin Mahua nodded, took 320 yuan from her pocket, and handed it to Chu Xuan. “I’ll head off now!”

Leaving Chu Xuan and Mu Chenze alone.

After watching his mother leave, Mu Chenze spoke up. “Can I trouble you with something?”"
