Chu Xuan’s first reaction was that she couldn’t delay Wei Qiang’s work.
After thanking Wei Qiang’s colleague, she got up and left.
She rode her bicycle toward the county hospital.
Once there, she headed straight to Dr. Zhang’s clinic.
He checked her pulse and adjusted her prescription.
Just as Chu Xuan was taking her prescription to the window to pay, she saw Feng Jun holding his head as he walked into the emergency department.
She couldn’t help but follow him.
She stood outside the emergency room, waiting for a while.
She saw a stylish woman hurry into the ER and stop in front of Feng Jun.
“Who hurt you?”
Feng Jun was waiting to have his wound treated in the waiting area. There was still another patient ahead of him, so he had time to talk. “I didn’t see clearly.”
“Let me see your wound.”
“I can’t let go yet—it’s still bleeding!”
“It’s still bleeding? What’s wrong with this nurse? You’re so badly hurt, and they’re still making you wait?”
The nurse, who was treating another patient, shot them a glare. “Keep it down! This patient is much more seriously hurt than your man!”
The stylish woman wanted to say more, but Feng Jun stopped her.
About ten minutes later, Feng Jun’s forehead was bandaged, and he left the ER with the woman.
Neither of them noticed Chu Xuan quietly following them with her bike.
The two of them entered a courtyard near the hospital and spoke in low voices.
“You don’t think Mu Chenze is taking revenge on you, do you?”
“I don’t know.”
“Whether it is or not, you should go to the public security team and say someone attacked you. Say you suspect Mu Chenze and let them investigate!”
“No. I can’t go against Mu Chenze openly anymore. Don’t forget that fat girl knows the secret.”
“Weren’t you planning to have her killed? Once she’s dead, the secret will stay buried forever.”
“I just found out that group didn’t manage to kill her. Four of them even got caught.”
“So what now? Will they rat you out?”
“No way.”
“How can you be so sure?”
“Because I gave your husband’s name. Go to the kitchen and make me some chicken soup.”
“You bastard! That’s the Sheng family’s kitchen. You’re getting bolder! Aren’t you afraid Chu Xuan will suspect you after today’s scare?”
“Of course I’m afraid! After I drink your chicken soup and you take good care of me, I’ll go kill Chu Xuan myself! Even if I have to die with her, I’ll protect you and our son.”
“Jun, thank you for thinking of me and our son. But I want to divorce Sheng Fang and be with you. That way you won’t have to take the risk…”
“Not yet. I’m not as rich as Sheng Fang. When I have more money than him and can give our son a good life, then you can leave him. Right now, he’s a golden goose.”
“Alright then.”
Chu Xuan didn’t listen any further.
She rode her bike to the public security team.
By coincidence, Sheng Fang was just leaving, accompanied by an officer.
Chu Xuan went straight up to the officer and said, “Comrade, I just learned something: Feng Jun impersonated Sheng Fang and hired people to kill me. I want to file a report.”
The officer looked at Sheng Fang.
Sheng Fang was baffled. He knew Feng Jun—he was a distant relative of his wife’s. Why would Feng Jun impersonate him?
Chu Xuan remained calm and continued, “I saw Feng Jun and a stylish woman acting intimately, like lovers. They were talking about how Sheng Fang is infertile, and how Feng Jun is raising his wife and son for him. They’re still together now, in the Sheng family’s courtyard!”
Feng Jun wanted her dead—she had no reason to keep his secret anymore.
The more people who knew, the less likely he could kill her all.
Sheng Fang stormed off in anger.
The officer, who was on good terms with him, followed.
Chu Xuan didn’t go with them. Instead, she went to Wei Qiang’s office to wait.
She couldn’t rest easy until she told Wei Qiang herself.
If Sheng Fang was willing to be cuckolded and cover for Feng Jun for the sake of his adopted son, wouldn’t all her efforts be wasted?
After waiting more than ten minutes, Wei Qiang returned.
“Why are you still here? Didn’t I have my colleague tell you to go home and wait for news?”
Chu Xuan explained softly, “Your colleague did tell me. I left, but then I came back. I went to the county hospital for my herbal medicine and happened to run into Feng Jun, so I followed him. I overheard him talking with a woman…”
She told him everything in detail.
Wei Qiang immediately reported to his superiors and requested Feng Jun’s arrest…
At that moment, Sheng Fang caught Feng Jun and Niu Ping in bed at his house.
Sheng Fang had long known he was infertile, and that he’d been made a “happy father” when he married Niu Ping.
Even so, he’d always treated Niu Ping and the child wholeheartedly.
He just never imagined Niu Ping had been cheating on him all along.
And with the very man who’d made him a “father” in the first place.
Today, if he didn’t kill Feng Jun, he’d no longer be a Sheng.
When Niu Ping and Feng Jun finished dressing and came out of the bedroom, they were greeted by Sheng Fang’s cleaver.
Niu Ping shrieked and hid to the side.
The officer present never expected the usually calm Sheng Fang to suddenly snap.
By the time he stopped Sheng Fang, Feng Jun had already been slashed in the neck.
Soon after, Wei Qiang arrived with reinforcements.
They subdued Sheng Fang.
At noon, Chu Xuan walked out of the public security office, her feelings mixed.
Feng Jun had died despite emergency treatment.
Sheng Fang and Niu Ping were both arrested.
In her previous life, Feng Jun and Niu Ping’s affair hadn’t been exposed at this point. Feng Jun had fought against Mu Chenze for years. Later, after Sheng Fang died in an accident, Feng Jun and Niu Ping openly got together and revealed the truth about their son’s parentage.
But in this life, because of Chu Xuan’s intervention, their fates had changed.
Mu Chenze had one less rival.
Still, Chu Xuan wondered who had hit Feng Jun on the forehead.
Could it have been Mu Chenze?
With that question in mind, she went to the hospital to get her medicine and then returned home.
After 7 p.m., everyone was off work, and only Chu Xuan and her brother were home.
Chu Xuan didn’t hide her conversation with Uncle Long from her brother.
Chu Feng was excited after hearing it, feeling like the truth was finally coming out.
After 8 p.m., Mu Chenze came by with his cart to pick up grilled fish snacks.
Chu Xuan sent her brother to his room, then quietly told Mu Chenze, “Feng Jun is dead.”
Mu Chenze was very calm. “I know. Sheng Fang killed him.”
“How do you know?”
“My classmate told me. He happened to be at the county public security office today.”
“I see. Does your classmate know Wei Qiang?”
“Yes. They used to work together. Wei Qiang asked for a transfer, and my classmate stayed in the city.”
“Besides being killed by Sheng Fang, Feng Jun was also hit on the forehead by someone else. Did you know that?”
Mu Chenze’s gaze flickered. “No.”
Chu Xuan’s heart skipped a beat, worried Mu Chenze was involved. “You’re lying! Honestly, he deserved payback, but now that he’s dead, this is serious. You must know who hit him on the head.”
Mu Chenze looked helpless. “I know who it was.”
“Who?”
“I don’t want to tell you.”
“Why not?”
“Don’t ask.”
No matter what she said, Mu Chenze wouldn’t say more, and Chu Xuan had no way to make him.
The next morning, just as Chu Xuan got up, there was a knock at the door.
She thought it was Old Qi coming to pick up fish snacks.
She opened the gate and saw Wei Qiang standing outside.
“Is there something you need?”
Wei Qiang nodded, his expression complicated. “I need you to come with me.”
“Can you tell me what it’s about?”
“I can’t say now. Someone will tell you when you get to the public security office.”"
