Chapter 159: So Considerate
Returning to the 1980s
Mu Chenze answered with a smile, without any hesitation, “You look great!”
Chu Xuan noticed that Mu Chenze’s gaze was fixed on her shoes, not on her.
She suddenly felt like teasing him. “Do I look better, or do the shoes look better?”
Mu Chenze replied openly, “You, and your clothes and shoes, all look great.”
Chu Xuan didn’t hide her delight at all. “I think so too. You have good taste. Thanks again.”
Mu Chenze smiled, “No need to thank me. Just remember to knit a sweater and some wool pants for my mom. I’ll bring the yarn over another day.”
Actually, Mu Chenze had already bought the yarn, but he didn’t want to bring it all at once.
He couldn’t come over every night to get grilled fish, so he had to find other reasons to visit.
If the weather was good, he’d only see her when they went to the beach or swimming.
But he really wanted to see her twice a day, rain or shine.
Mu Chenze didn’t know when he’d started having this goal.
Chu Xuan had no idea about the little schemes in his heart. “Just bring it over within five days. Your wool pants and such should be done in about five days.”
“No need to rush. Don’t tire yourself out.”
“It’s no trouble. Starting tomorrow, I don’t have much to do at home, so I’ll have plenty of time to knit.”
“Aren’t you planning to rebuild your house soon?”
“I have to wait my turn. If I can start in late October, I’ll be lucky.”
“When the time comes, Pingzi and I will come help.”
“Thank you in advance.”
“You’re being polite again. Don’t keep saying thank you, or I’ll get mad at you.”
“Alright, I won’t say it anymore.”
After chatting for so long, Chu Xuan still hadn’t mentioned anything about Feng Chunhua and Liang Shi.
Mu Chenze didn’t pry. He just reminded her not to tell anyone that he bought her the clothes, then left, dragging over 260 jin of grilled fish.
The next morning, as soon as Chu Xuan opened her courtyard gate, she saw Feng Shuai passing by.
Before she could say anything, Feng Shuai greeted her first.
“Chu Xuan, today’s my first day at the food factory. How do I look in this suit?”
He was wearing a black suit and leather shoes, his hair slicked back.
He looked quite sharp.
That outfit must have cost a pretty penny.
Feng Shuai clearly had money!
Chu Xuan smiled politely. “It suits your job well.”
She didn’t plan to ask if Feng Shuai knew what Feng Chunhua was up to before marrying Chu Dashan—she didn’t want to alert him.
Before she got married, Feng Chunhua had been away from home for several years, claiming she was working, but what really happened still needed to be investigated.
Just like how no one in the village knew Feng Chunhua had a child for the Yuan family in Beijing.
Maybe Feng Shuai knew something, but he wasn’t about to say.
Chu Xuan didn’t press.
As for whether Feng Shuai had stolen Feng Chunhua’s valuables, Chu Xuan certainly wouldn’t ask him directly.
Feng Shuai lowered his voice so only the two of them could hear. “Qin Xuehong is recovering. I went to the hospital to see her yesterday. The Qin family is protecting her very well. If anyone tries to hurt her, they’ll just be walking into a trap.”
“Thanks for coming to tell me. Any other news?”
“That’s it. Anything on your end?”
“Would the theft at Feng Chunhua’s house count?”
A flicker of panic flashed in Feng Shuai’s eyes. “I heard about that. Anything else?”
Chu Xuan said casually, “Chu Dashan has a mistress. Does that count?”
Feng Shuai was very interested. “Of course! Who is it?”
Chu Xuan hinted, “A widow from your village. As for her name, you’ll have to find out yourself.”
“There are about a dozen widows in our village, and only a few are known to be loose. I’ll figure it out soon. Gotta go!”
Feng Shuai waved and left.
Chu Xuan believed Feng Shuai would use this information to get under Feng Chunhua’s skin.
After watching him go, Chu Xuan jogged around the village for exercise.
On the way, she ran into Liu Dapeng heading to the food factory. They greeted each other but didn’t chat.
Chu Xuan kept running.
About ten minutes later, as she was jogging, she suddenly realized something was off—her period had started.
She hurried home.
A quick trip to the bathroom confirmed it.
After cleaning up, she realized she was bleeding more than last time, so toilet paper wouldn’t do. She hadn’t bought pads last time because her period was light.
She decided to go to town to buy some after breakfast.
A little after nine, Chu Xuan rode out.
On the way to town, she ran into Mu Chenze, who was driving a truck back from the city.
Mu Chenze saw her too and stopped the truck.
His exhaustion from staying up all night vanished instantly. “Chu Xuan, where are you headed?”
Running into Mu Chenze made Chu Xuan secretly happy, though she kept a calm face. “Just going to town to buy something. Today I can only go to the beach, but no swimming—don’t waste a trip.”
Mu Chenze looked at her curiously. “No swimming? Is it that time of the month again?”
Chu Xuan blushed and nodded.
Her cycle was still irregular due to her health.
Mu Chenze muttered softly, “So early this time? Good thing I brought you some pads today.”
As he spoke, he handed a bulging cloth bag out the window.
Chu Xuan took it and opened it—inside were several packs of sanitary pads.
“How did you know about this?”
Mu Chenze didn’t feel embarrassed at all. “There’s a lot I know! Take them home and use them.”
“How much do I owe you?”
“Just deduct it from the fish money. I’m heading home for a nap first, then I’ll bring you the money after I wake up.”
“Okay.” Chu Xuan patted the bag, grateful. “Now I don’t have to make a special trip to town.”
Mu Chenze asked with concern, “Do you still have brown sugar at home?”
Chu Xuan was touched by how thoughtful he was. “Yes.”
Such a considerate man—if he became someone else’s husband, she’d regret it for life.
But if she married him, he and his family would be the ones to regret it for life.
Mu Chenze reminded her, “Remember to make yourself a cup. And don’t go to the beach these next few days. Otherwise, all that herbal medicine you’ve been taking will be for nothing.”
Chu Xuan waved her hand. “The grilled fish workshop is closed. I have to make money by going to the beach. I can’t just not go.”
Mu Chenze looked her straight in the eye, very serious. “Listen, just skip these few days. Otherwise, if you can’t have kids after you get married, no amount of money will fix it. Think about what’s more important!”
In her past life, Chu Xuan had never been pregnant. Hearing this in this life, she immediately took it seriously. “Okay, I won’t go. I’m heading home.”
She definitely didn’t want infertility.
She turned her bike around and rode home.
Mu Chenze couldn’t help but smile. This girl says she doesn’t want to get married, but deep down she must want to, and to have kids too, right?
She was still wearing old clothes today—probably afraid of staining her new ones.
Even so, her altered old clothes looked much better than before.
Was it his eyes playing tricks, or had her tailoring skills really improved?
He’d have to take a good look next time they met, after he caught up on sleep.
But for now, he couldn’t go home and nap just yet.
He headed to the neighboring town.
It was time to return the truck he’d rented.
After returning the truck, he didn’t go home, but took a carriage to town.
Once there, he walked into Uncle Long’s shop.
Uncle Long was the only one inside.
“Uncle Long.”
“Xiao Ze, you’re here! Have a seat.”
Uncle Long warmly poured him some tea.
Mu Chenze thanked him and took the tea, thirsty, sipping as he blew on it.
After a few sips, he asked in a low voice, “Any news? Have Feng Chunhua and Liang Shi met yet?”"
