Chapter 152: Did I Take You In Just So You Could Stand Around Doing Nothing?

Scavenging in the Wasteland

Xiao Jiao was so frightened that she burst into tears, kneeling beside Shi Yuebai.

“Auntie, what’s wrong? Auntie!”

Shi Yuebai pressed through the splitting headache, burying her face in her hands.

“I’m fine. Have someone throw Xiao Lingye at the main city gate.”

“Clean him up a bit, put him in a new set of clothes.”

Clothes, shoes, socks—Shi Yuebai had no shortage of those now.

There was little food to be found in the underground shopping street, but there was plenty of clothing, shoes, socks, and even high-end toys.

Just the collection of super cute little notebooks, sparkly cartoon pens, and all kinds of stickers filled up 200 big plastic bags.

And that was just the beginning.

After all, only a small section of the underground shopping street had been cleared out—probably less than a third.

Xiao Jiao, glancing back every few steps, went to find a group of elderly folks.

Even though these elders hadn’t been sent out to scavenge by Pang Zhenggong today, they still had their own tasks.

They loaded stones dug up from underground into big crates.

The “oddballs” worked in pairs to carry each crate, hauling them to the second city wall.

When Xiao Jiao arrived at the second wall, the elders in charge of cleaning the underground street happened to be on break.

Once Xiao Jiao called them over, they wasted no time stripping Xiao Lingye and his men of all their clothes.

Shi Yuebai’s spirit form had already knocked Xiao Lingye and his men unconscious, so no matter how they were stripped, they wouldn’t wake up.

Then, under the cover of night, the elders carried Xiao Lingye and his men to the main city gate.

Ying Ruoying was tidying up inside the house.

Really, as long as the bloodstains on the first floor were cleaned up, the place didn’t look half bad.

The previous owner must have had good taste; the details of the house showed how much care had gone into it.

The furniture was all in place, and the dried blood on the sofa had been scrubbed clean by Ying Ruoying.

She spent the night sleeping on the sofa, and after eating a little something the next morning, she headed out.

Shi Yuebai hadn’t told her she couldn’t leave the yard.

And since the house was in a secluded spot, just a few steps forward brought her to the main city gate.

Although this wasn’t the city center, anyone coming or going had to pass through this gate.

Ying Ruoying decided she’d trade supplies here.

Shi Yuebai had given her plenty; even though she’d only cleared out one basement and the first floor of the villa, she was eager to complete the task Shi Yuebai had assigned her.

When she reached the gate, it was bustling with people.

A large crowd had gathered around a few individuals.

Ying Ruoying didn’t dare leave the city—if a woman stepped outside, she could be dragged off and no one would care.

The police only handled matters inside the city.

She stood on tiptoe to look outside and saw Xiao Lingye, face dark and neck flushed, trying to explain himself.

“I didn’t do anything! Your people didn’t come back—how would I know what happened?”

The city had its own teams.

The ones who worked for the office supervisor were the biggest team in the city.

The men assigned to Xiao Lingye this time were all from that team.

The leader, a man with a scarred face, held a knife and, with a single chop, sliced off one of Xiao Lingye’s fingers.

“My team lent you 25 men—not a single one came back. But your own people all returned, dressed in brand new clothes.”

“And you’re telling me you didn’t pull any tricks?”

Xiao Lingye’s screams echoed out.

He collapsed to his knees, facing right in Ying Ruoying’s direction.

The once arrogant, hot-tempered musclehead now looked like a beaten dog.

“I told you, I didn’t! You have to believe me! I don’t know what happened, ahhh!”

Anyone who saw Shi Yuebai’s spirit form couldn’t handle the psychological pressure.

Either they’d remember every detail of her actions, or they’d forget almost everything that happened.

Their brains would be severely affected.

Clearly, Xiao Lingye was the latter.

Scarface glared at the men behind Xiao Lingye.

“You lot—what really happened?”

The team members, all dressed in fresh new clothes, looked pale as ghosts. One of them shouted,

“There was this ancient woman in red—she just whooshed over and hit us with a stick—”

Scarface sneered, “And then?”

And then? The only man who remembered anything just recalled the woman in red hitting him with a stick.

“And then, whoosh, whoosh, whoosh—she hit me!”

Xiao Lingye’s men knelt on the ground, unable to give any coherent explanation.

No matter how they were questioned, all they could do was repeat, “A woman in red, a stick, whoosh, whoosh, whoosh.”

They sounded more and more like lunatics rambling nonsense.

Scarface, enraged, waved his hand.

“Beat them! Keep beating until they talk!”

The city’s police and survivors all crowded at the gate to watch.

Ying Ruoying was among them.

She couldn’t even bear to blink.

To see Xiao Lingye fall from grace with her own eyes—her whole body trembled, one hand braced against the wall, her fingertips digging into the bricks.

Don’t kill him, don’t kill him.

Xiao Lingye hasn’t paid for his crimes yet—he can’t die now.

A whole group of people started kicking and punching Xiao Lingye and his men.

They hadn’t been hurt at all by Shi Yuebai—she’d just knocked them out with a stick.

But here, under Scarface’s hands, they were beaten half to death.

Xiao Lingye was filled with hatred.

“Boss, two of them are dead.”

Scarface’s subordinate whispered to him.

Scarface raised his hand, and the beating stopped.

He crouched down, yanking Xiao Lingye up by the hair.

“I’ll give you one more day. You’d better hand over my men.”

“With so many people missing, even if you wanted to eat them, you’d have to butcher them one by one.”

In the wasteland, strong, clear-headed young men were vital to any team.

To curry favor with the supervisor, Scarface had sent his 25 best men to Xiao Lingye.

But not one had returned.

How could Scarface not be suspicious?

With food supplies running low, cannibal gangs were popping up everywhere.

Xiao Lingye came back unharmed, yet couldn’t give any explanation.

How could Scarface not suspect him?

“You bastard, remember this—if you don’t talk, I’ll beat you every day.”

Behind Ying Ruoying, Shi Yuebai’s voice sounded.

“Enjoying the show? Feel better now?”

Ying Ruoying turned around, but didn’t see Shi Yuebai herself.

All she saw was a paper airplane hovering in front of her.

Shi Yuebai’s irritable voice came from it: “If you’ve seen enough, go collect supplies!”

“Did I take you in just so you could stand around doing nothing?”

The sun’s out today—come on, let’s go bask in it."
