Chapter 177: Homemade Communicator

Scavenging in the Wasteland

But when Ying Ruoying returned, she brought back six rather unimpressive people.

At some point, Old Bao and Little Bao had come back as well. They had already rescued the nearly-dead bodyguards who had been strung up in the courtyard.

Seven-year-old Little Bao stood up and said to Ying Ruoying,

“Ying-jie, you’re back.”

Ying Ruoying nodded.

“I’ll have someone bring you food in a bit. But you shouldn’t follow me anymore.”

“BOSS says you all have to leave.”

Little Bao’s eyes turned red. “Ying-jie, we don’t want to go. Can BOSS give Grandpa and me another chance?”

On the wasteland, there was nowhere better to survive than with Ying Ruoying.

Before meeting her, he and his grandfather had lived in constant hunger.

They’d often have to split a single meal into several portions, and even then, they’d hesitate to eat it.

At over seven years old, Little Bao was severely malnourished.

He wasn’t even as tall as a five-year-old from before the wasteland.

As for Old Bao, he’d hovered at the edge of starvation more times than he could count.

If not for his grandson, he would have given up on life long ago.

Dying was easy—just close your eyes and the pain would be over.

This wasteland was just too hopeless, with no joy in living.

It was only after following Ying Ruoying that Old Bao and Little Bao found a glimmer of hope for survival.

Ying Ruoying frowned as she looked at Old Bao and Little Bao.

The bodyguards, who had been cut down and were covered in bruises, also looked at her with sorrowful faces.

They knew they were weak.

If they weren’t, they wouldn’t have to beg for scraps just to survive.

They’d seen with their own eyes how BOSS’s people had fought their way through the villa and courtyard.

Compared to BOSS’s people, they weren’t even worthy of carrying their shoes.

But they desperately wanted to live.

If they couldn’t follow someone as powerful as BOSS, they’d have no chance of surviving in the city.

Today, they’d offended Scarface. He would never let them go.

Ying Ruoying thought for a moment, then said,

“You should go to Xiao Lingye’s place for now and lay low. I think Scarface has his eyes on me at the moment.”

These people had no ability to protect themselves.

If Scarface brought more men, Old Bao and the others would just end up as his spoils.

At this point, it was impossible to drive them away.

They’d probably rather die than leave Ying Ruoying.

Old Bao, Little Bao, and the others quickly wiped away their tears and, before Scarface could react, hurriedly left the city.

After making arrangements for them, Ying Ruoying turned to the six people Shi Yuebai had sent her.

To be honest, none of the six looked particularly bright.

But they all had a layer of muscle and were much stronger than the average survivor.

And they were fiercely loyal to Shi Yuebai.

Ying Ruoying took a deep breath and pulled herself together.

“Everyone needs to be extra careful from now on. Let’s gather all the supplies we can from the surrounding area first.”

Scarface still didn’t know that all the people he’d left in the villa were either dead or captured by Shi Yuebai.

But that was only a matter of time.

Shi Yuebai couldn’t stop collecting supplies.

So Ying Ruoying decided to change her approach.

All the finished food Xiao Lingye and his group had acquired would be delivered by Old Bao and Little Bao to Shi Yuebai.

Ying Ruoying would then use the points she got from Shi Yuebai to collect supplies in the city.

She shared this idea with Shi Yuebai.

Shi Yuebai handed her a communicator.

“Made by Guai Guai from spare parts,” Shi Yuebai said matter-of-factly.

“He said it’s not very technical. It can connect to the city’s communication network, but we can also set up our own private channel.”

The communicator on the wasteland was much like a pre-apocalypse cell phone.

But it didn’t have any of the fancy features of a phone.

Wasteland communicators were extremely tough, drop-proof, and durable—holding one felt like holding a small brick, heavy and solid.

The downside was that they only worked in specific cities and their outskirts.

You couldn’t use them in the territory of another city.

Shi Yuebai explained,

“Each city has its own network. If you want to make a living in another city, you have to buy that city’s communicator.”

Only then could you connect to that city’s communication channels.

But communicators weren’t cheap, and everyone was struggling to get by.

If you had points, wouldn’t you rather buy food?

Why spend them on a communicator?

That’s why communicators were considered pretty useless on the wasteland, and their prices kept going up, requiring more and more points.

Now, only survivors who worked for the city’s management needed them.

After all, points were distributed by management and required real-name registration.

To use those points, you needed a communicator.

For example, mercenaries had to have one each.

Otherwise, they wouldn’t receive their monthly points from management.

Ordinary survivors preferred to use unregistered points cards.

That way, they could save the money they’d spend on a communicator.

And they wouldn’t have to pay a monthly fee to management for using the communicator.

But the communicators Guai Guai made could not only connect perfectly to the city’s network,

They also didn’t require any extra points to be paid to management.

Plus, the materials Guai Guai used for the communicators seemed to be old pre-apocalypse cell phones.

He made a total of 100 communicators, and Shi Yuebai gave one to everyone for free.

Each one was unique.

Ying Ruoying looked at the small communicator in her hand. There was even a Hello Kitty sticker on the case.

Once again, she marveled at how many talented people Shi Yuebai had.

They could even find loopholes in the city’s technical systems.

Shi Yuebai said to her,

“I’ll transfer you a million points. Use them to collect whatever supplies you want.”

Ying Ruoying was startled by Shi Yuebai’s generosity.

“That many points? Isn’t that too much?”

As soon as she finished speaking, her communicator chimed.

A million points had arrived.

Shi Yuebai didn’t mind giving her so much.

Commander Qiao was just too good at making money. In a short time, he’d earned over four million points for Shi Yuebai.

He’d also brought back a huge pile of points cards.

Those cards were all crumpled and messy.

Da Jiao spent a long time sorting them out and finally counted over two million points’ worth.

So Shi Yuebai wasn’t short on points at all.

She figured that everyone in and around the city had probably been cleaned out by Commander Qiao.

Now, Commander Qiao spent all day sending mass texts on his communicator.

But with Guai Guai’s communicator, he didn’t even need to pay extra points to send mass messages.

Some survivors found him annoying and blocked him.

But Guai Guai could even get around those blocks.

In short, there was no spam message that Commander Qiao couldn’t send.

In the short time Ying Ruoying had her communicator, she’d already received ten spammy messages that looked like scams.

All from Commander Qiao."
