Chapter 25: Shi Yuebai Now Has 730 Jin Left

Scavenging in the Wasteland

Nong Yasi and Second Sister-in-law Shi could barely contain their excitement.

Now that they had a gun, it meant they finally had some deterrent power.

Those survivors who wanted to bully them would have to think twice—bullets don’t have eyes.

Seeing that it was already late, Shi Yuebai rested for a while, then checked her current body weight internally.

After a period of busy work, and having secretly injected each person with a jin of fat energy while no one was looking, her weight had fluctuated up and down. Now, Shi Yuebai had 730 jin left.

Shi Yaoyao was diligently copying the character “天” one hundred times.

Worried about Yaoyao’s eyes getting strained, Shi Yuebai gave her a solar lamp.

They’d found this lamp while scavenging in the ruins.

To others, it was just useless junk, but Shi Yuebai found it rather interesting.

This kind of solar lamp could store energy as long as it was left in the light when not in use.

When you needed it, you just flipped the switch on top.

Although the lamp didn’t stay on for long, it was enough for Yaoyao to finish writing those hundred characters.

Second Sister-in-law Shi was tidying up the things in the tarp, putting a dirty seat cushion into the shopping cart they’d gotten from Guai Guai.

From now on, this shopping cart would be Shi Xiangrui’s stroller.

While Nong Yasi was taking care of Xiangrui and Mother Shi, Shi Yuebai used a water-gathering spell to fill a large wooden basin with water.

“Yaoyao, come here.”

Just then, Yaoyao had finished writing her hundred “天” characters.

She awkwardly stood up from her chair, as if wanting to sit on the ground and scoot herself over by hand.

“Yaoyao, walk over here!”

Shi Yuebai’s tone was a bit stern.

“You need to get used to it quickly, because no one has the extra time to teach you.”

Yaoyao looked at Shi Yuebai in panic, terrified of making her aunt angry.

She had already crouched to the ground, but now slowly stood up, and step by step, painstakingly walked toward Shi Yuebai.

Second Sister-in-law Shi, who was fussing with the shopping cart, listened nervously for the sound of Yaoyao’s footsteps.

Nong Yasi, holding Xiangrui, stood up as well, ready to help at any moment.

“Yuebai, after all, Yaoyao just got her prosthetic,” Nong Yasi said, feeling Shi Yuebai’s demand was harsh.

Most people, after being disabled for a long time, need a long period to adapt to standing with a prosthetic.

Yaoyao had just gotten hers, and being able to stand and find her balance was already impressive.

Shi Yuebai, sitting on a flatbed cart, glanced at Nong Yasi.

“There’s no time.”

She didn’t have time to teach Yaoyao. Second Sister-in-law Shi was already busy enough, and Nong Yasi had to care for both Xiangrui and Mother Shi.

So Yaoyao could only be her responsibility.

But Shi Yuebai was not a patient person.

If she was in charge of Yaoyao, this was how she’d do it.

Fortunately, Yaoyao listened to Shi Yuebai very well.

She staggered, stepping on her prosthetic, and walked toward Shi Yuebai, one step at a time.

Several times, Yaoyao nearly fell, making Second Sister-in-law Shi’s heart leap into her throat.

But the little girl steadied herself, and finally, despite the close calls, made it to Shi Yuebai safely.

Both Second Sister-in-law Shi and Nong Yasi let out a sigh of relief.

But then came the sound of water.

They realized that the basin by the bridge pier had somehow filled up with water again.

Shi Yuebai had said earlier that Yaoyao should take a bath when she got back.

Second Sister-in-law Shi had thought she was just saying it.

But Shi Yuebai meant it.

Given Shi Yuebai’s no-nonsense personality, neither Second Sister-in-law Shi nor Nong Yasi dared say anything, even though they felt it was a waste of clean water.

After Yaoyao came out, scrubbed clean from a basin of black, dirty water, she looked like a different person.

Shi Yuebai was reminded of the big-headed dolls from cartoons.

She actually looked rather cute.

“All right, go to sleep.”

Shi Yuebai patted Yaoyao’s head and watched her hobble over to the mattress, carefully lying down next to Mother Shi.

Nong Yasi, holding Xiangrui, frowned deeply.

She saw Shi Yuebai sitting on the flatbed cart, leaning against a pile of rubble, resting with her eyes closed.

Nong Yasi walked over with Xiangrui in her arms.

“So, what are we going to do about this child?”

Nong Yasi had delivered Xiangrui herself, and her strong sense of responsibility made her worry for the baby’s future.

Shi Yuebai, filthy all over, lifted her chubby face with its double chin and looked blankly at Nong Yasi.

“What do you mean, what to do?”

The child’s born, so you raise it. What else is there to do?

Nong Yasi sighed, sat down beside Shi Yuebai with Xiangrui in her arms.

“I just checked your mother’s body. She’s too old, there’s no milk…”

Which meant the baby would need formula.

But where would you find that in the wasteland?

Even expired formula had long since been scavenged and sold to the wealthy in the big city.

As if to prove her point, the tiny bundle in her arms started to fuss, pursing its lips and about to cry.

In the dead of night, even though Mother Shi was exhausted and passed out on the mattress, she still frowned uneasily.

Shi Yuebai reached out her thick hand and stroked Xiangrui’s little head.

She drew a thin stream of fat energy from her own body and infused it into Xiangrui.

The baby, who had been about to cry from hunger, gradually quieted down.

Nong Yasi just thought the baby was too little and tired herself out crying.

She said worriedly, “That cry doesn’t sound good.”

A weak cry meant the child might not survive.

And in a place like the wasteland, it was almost certain Xiangrui wouldn’t last long.

Shi Yuebai pressed her lips together and said nothing.

“You should get some sleep with Xiangrui. There’s endless work to do tomorrow.”

Nong Yasi’s heart sank.

Endless work… How many men would each woman have to serve?

But at the same time, she felt a sense of security. The Shi family was her best option now.

Nong Yasi sat on the edge of the mattress with Xiangrui.

After an hour or so, Xiangrui started fussing again.

Shi Yuebai barely slept the whole night.

Every time Xiangrui started to whimper, she’d infuse a bit of fat energy into the baby’s tiny body.

But the baby was so small, she could only give a little each time.

Too much, and the baby’s body wouldn’t be able to handle it.

After making it through the night, as soon as Nong Yasi woke up, Shi Yuebai assigned her a task.

“You! Fifty.”

Nong Yasi’s face went pale.

Fifty?

Then she heard Shi Yuebai continue,

“We still have 500 small bread rolls left. Take fifty out and see if you can trade them for some clean clothes or any kind of daily necessities.”

I ate really well today."
