Chapter 31: Finally Down to 718 Jin

Scavenging in the Wasteland

Chen Yong looked a little downcast.

If he had known Shi Yuebai would be so generous, he wouldn’t have said those sarcastic things to her back in the Shi family’s tent.

Shi Yuebai didn’t care about Chen Yong’s inner turmoil.

In fact, she hadn’t taken his mocking words to heart at all.

Second Sister-in-law Shi, on the other hand, was a bit worried that Chen Yong’s words might have hurt Shi Yuebai’s self-esteem.

But as night fell, Shi Yuebai was busy with her own affairs. After checking Shi Yaoyao’s homework, she called Nong Yasi over to help wash Mother Shi.

Nong Yasi, though reluctant to waste water, still followed Shi Yuebai’s instructions—she stripped Mother Shi and sat her down in the washbasin.

The moment Mother Shi sat in the water, she uncharacteristically quieted down.

She even managed to say a few normal sentences to Nong Yasi:

“Trim my nails too.”

“My skin’s been so dry lately. Use the best essential oil on me.”

Nong Yasi lowered her head, “Mm, okay.”

“Did I get a membership card for your place?” Mother Shi closed her eyes, leaning against the rim of the basin.

Nong Yasi quickly looked to Shi Yuebai, unsure how to answer.

Shi Yuebai said,

“Mom, you didn’t. This is just a trial package—just a wash, that’s all.”

Mother Shi’s face clearly showed her dissatisfaction.

But, remembering she hadn’t bought a membership and was only here for a trial, she knew she couldn’t ask for too much.

Second Sister-in-law Shi smiled as she fumbled for a clean set of clothes for Mother Shi.

When Mother Shi got out of the basin, the water was as black as ink.

As usual, Shi Yuebai poured the dirty water onto the small patch of potato seedlings.

“Let’s all get to bed early tonight. Tomorrow, we’ll split up to get things done.”

Building a path to the public toilet was not something they could give up on.

But since Yi Zhe was taking them scavenging tomorrow, the Shi family had to split into two groups.

Shi Yuebai planned to leave the stronger, more able-bodied Second Sister-in-law Shi and Nong Yasi in the tent to keep moving stones—and to look after the still-crazy Mother Shi.

Shi Yuebai and Shi Yaoyao would take the baby, Shi Xiangrui, out scavenging.

Mother Shi came over, her face full of affection as she asked Shi Yuebai,

“What about Mommy? What’s Mommy’s job?”

The way Mother Shi spoke was like she was talking to a kindergartener, her gaze full of doting love.

She was waiting for her precious daughter to assign her a task.

When Shi Yuebai was young, whether it was kindergarten, elementary, or middle school, Mother Shi never missed a single parent-teacher event.

She was always the most enthusiastic parent.

At every parent-child activity, Mother Shi was the one who cooperated best with Shi Yuebai.

Scenes from those memories flashed through Shi Yuebai’s mind, leaving her a little bitter.

She really had been a child raised in a honey jar.

“Mom, your job today is to move stones.”

“If you do a good job, I’ll get you a membership card.”

Mother Shi clapped her hands happily, her clean face beaming with motherly love.

“Okay, okay! Yuebai gave Mommy a job, Mommy will do her best!”

The next day.

Before dawn, Shi Yuebai woke up sitting on the flatbed cart.

She was furious to discover that even though she hadn’t eaten or drunk anything, after a night of constant wasteland radiation, her weight had gone up again.

In just one night, her body had put on dozens of jin of fat.

“Damn it! You think I can’t beat fate?”

Gritting her teeth and enduring the agony, Shi Yuebai forcibly injected four jin of fat energy into each member of the Shi family—

except for the baby, Shi Xiangrui.

Too much fat energy would do Shi Xiangrui no good.

In fact, it wasn’t good for any ordinary person.

Gaining four jin in a day was already the limit for an adult.

For a baby like Shi Xiangrui, two or three liang at most.

While everyone was still asleep, Shi Yuebai used her Water Gathering Spell to fill every basin, bottle, and jar with water.

Finally, she poured a huge amount of spiritual energy into the enhanced Dizziness Array on the ground.

She didn’t stop until wisps of white mist began to rise from the ground, the spiritual energy so dense it was almost tangible.

At this point, Shi Yuebai’s weight finally dropped to 718 jin.

So, as they say, there’s endless fun in fighting with people, and endless fun in fighting with the heavens.

Shi Yuebai refused to believe it—she, a grand witch of the Wu tribe, would really get fat enough to die in this wasteland?

A sliver of light broke through the thick clouds and landed on the enhanced Dizziness Array in front of Shi Yuebai.

Behind her, the tiny patch of potato seedlings visibly shot up by a millimeter.

It wasn’t much, but the leaves looked much fresher and greener.

Soon, the women and children of the Shi family woke up one after another.

Shi Yuebai called out to the sleepy women and children,

“Starting today, you all have to brush your teeth and wash your faces every day!”

“Look, I’ve already got the water ready for you.”

She gestured to the twenty or so basins under the bridge.

After a whole day of moving stones yesterday, the cleared space was now filled with basins and bottles.

Every single one was full of clean water.

Zero radiation! Pure water!!!

Nong Yasi stood up in shock, her suspicions now confirmed.

Shi Yuebai was definitely a water-type ability user!

Nong Yasi’s heart pounded wildly.

She’d only wanted to survive for a bite to eat, but had unexpectedly latched onto a powerful ability user.

It was like buying a random lottery ticket and winning billions.

She was determined to cling tightly to Shi Yuebai.

“Yuebai, don’t worry, we’ll definitely work hard today.”

Nong Yasi clenched her fists in determination. For this clean water, she’d move even more stones than yesterday.

Shi Yuebai nodded, then added,

“But don’t overdo it, Dr. Nong. Don’t put too much pressure on yourself.”

“It’s easy to survive with me. All I ask is for simple loyalty.”

The women and children of the Shi family washed their hands and faces with the clean water, wiped their necks, and used the box of toothbrushes Shi Yuebai had scavenged to brush their teeth—without toothpaste.

Just then, Yi Zhe’s voice sounded from outside the tent,

“Yuebai, are you ready? I’ll take you scavenging.”

“All set!”

Shi Yuebai had Shi Yaoyao carry a big bag with two bottles of disinfectant.

In front, she wrapped Shi Xiangrui in a baby blanket.

She herself sat on the flatbed cart and rolled out of the tent.

Outside the enhanced Dizziness Array, Yi Zhe and Chen Yong stared in shock at Shi Yuebai, Shi Yaoyao, and Shi Xiangrui.

Yi Zhe frowned, “Just you three?”

Not a single able-bodied person among them...

What are you guys doing?"
