Chapter 96: She Really Dislikes That Strange Stench

Scavenging in the Wasteland

The night was dark and the wind was high, with natural white smoke drifting everywhere, creating a perfect cover.

It was simply too easy to launch a sneak attack.

No matter how furiously useless Uncle Chen was, another one of their men was still taken out by surprise.

Xu Xuejiao was ruthless—far more so than Ah Hong.

In fact, her sense of awareness was sharper than most women’s.

Back when she first met Shi Yuebai, she’d let her emotions show only because she’d underestimated her.

But at all other times, Xu Xuejiao was painfully clear about one thing:

If she didn’t kill these men, these men would kill her and her two daughters.

The strength a mother can display for her children is explosive and astonishing.

Shi Yuebai sat on the edge of the ditch, watching as Xu Xuejiao swung her hoe down hard on the back of a man’s head.

Once wasn’t enough—she was afraid he might survive and become a future threat to her and her daughters.

So she struck him several more times as he fell.

Ahead, Uncle Chen’s group was down to just four men.

But at the same time, they finally spotted Commander Qiao.

They all rushed at him, fists and feet flying.

Uncle Chen drew his knife, glaring viciously as Commander Qiao was forced up against the ditch wall.

“You son of a bitch, I tried to give you some face, but you just had to push it. Don’t blame me for killing you.”

Xu Xuejiao shouted and charged over, swinging her hoe wildly.

“Let him go! Let him go, you bastards!”

Uncle Chen turned and stabbed his knife toward Xu Xuejiao’s neck.

When people go savage, their adrenaline surges.

At that point, there’s no reason left.

Even though the muscle-bound commander had told him to bring back Xu Xuejiao—she was still attractive, after all, and had been a campus beauty at a famous university when she was young.

If she’d gone into showbiz back then, she wouldn’t have been any less popular than Shi Yuebai’s second sister-in-law.

People these days liked to indulge their twisted fantasies.

The ones they could only look up to in the past, now trampled underfoot and begging for mercy.

That muscle-bound commander was like this, and so was Uncle Chen.

But his knife never reached Xu Xuejiao.

An invisible force stopped him.

Above them, black hair dangled down.

Both Xu Xuejiao and Uncle Chen instinctively looked up—right above their heads was the woman in the red wedding dress.

She was crouched above them in a strange, eerie posture.

One of her hands gripped the blade of Uncle Chen’s knife.

No blood flowed out. The woman’s face was deathly pale, as if covered in thick powder.

Before Uncle Chen could react, Xu Xuejiao swung her hoe.

It struck Uncle Chen right at the temple.

He staggered, slumping against the ditch wall.

Before he could regain his balance, Xu Xuejiao’s hoe came down again.

It cracked open his skull.

He died instantly.

Xu Xuejiao panted for breath.

She sensed someone behind her.

The next gunshot rang out—Shi Yuebai’s second sister-in-law was standing atop the ditch, gun in hand.

Her aim was even steadier than last time.

After all, it wasn’t her first time killing.

Xu Xuejiao turned and saw a man standing behind her, knife raised, ready to kill her.

It was Shi Yuebai’s second sister-in-law who’d shot just in time and saved her.

Xu Xuejiao looked up, full of gratitude.

She saw a row of people standing at the top of the ditch.

Shi Yuebai’s second sister-in-law lowered her gun, with Nong Yasi at her side.

Ah Hong stood on Shi Yuebai’s other side, while Shi Yaoyao and Pang Ziyuan stepped forward, standing behind Shi Yuebai.

For a moment, Xu Xuejiao suddenly felt—

Even if Shi Yuebai never gave her another chance, never accepted her as one of their own,

Just having Shi Yuebai at her back gave her confidence.

There were only two men left.

Both were attacking Commander Qiao.

But Commander Qiao had latched onto one of them.

His shovel was gone—no idea where it had ended up.

So he just used his hands, strangling the man in front of him with all his strength.

Commander Qiao snarled,

“I’m a nice guy, and you think you can just walk all over me?”

“I only have two daughters left. I just want them to live.”

“If you won’t let my girls live, then you all deserve to die!”

The other man tried to help, but Xu Xuejiao tackled him aside.

The fight in the ditch was fierce.

But the outcome was already clear.

Shi Yuebai turned her wheelchair to leave.

“Before dawn, have the Qiao family take care of all the bodies.”

She didn’t want the corpses piling up near the Shi family.

It wasn’t because she was worried about scaring the children.

It was just that, in the wasteland, there was no crematorium or anything to deal with bodies.

Leave them there, and they’d start to stink.

Shi Yuebai’s room was filled with the faint aroma of mushrooms and potatoes.

She really disliked strange, unexplained odors.

Knowing how particular Shi Yuebai was, Commander Qiao and Xu Xuejiao didn’t wait for morning. They hauled all ten male corpses far away and dumped them.

Meanwhile, the muscle-bound commander from next door had already entered the big city at dawn.

With a greasy smile, he stood in an office in the administration building.

Xiao Lingye patted his chest and promised,

“I’ll definitely deliver those two virgins to you. Just wait a little longer—they’ll be washed and ready for you tonight.”

The man behind the desk, a cigar between his fingers, said,

“You’d better keep your word.”

Pretty, clean young girls were worth a fortune these days.

Xiao Lingye, all muscle and bravado, nodded eagerly, then brought up the twenty city residence permits he’d been promised.

The man behind the desk grew impatient.

“I’ll keep my promise once I’ve seen those two girls and confirmed they’re as good as you say.”

Xiao Lingye bowed and scraped as he left the office.

As soon as he stepped out of the administration building, he rushed back to his team.

When he returned, full of excitement,

He asked around—Uncle Chen and his ten men still hadn’t come back.

“It’s been all night! What’s taking them so damn long?”

Xiao Lingye was furious.

He wasn’t worried about Uncle Chen and the others’ safety.

In Xiao Lingye’s eyes, the team under the bridge was less than nothing—he wouldn’t even spare them a glance.

He couldn’t be bothered to squash them like bugs.

Uncle Chen was useless, but he’d taken so many men to snatch the two girls.

There shouldn’t have been any suspense.

What Xiao Lingye was worried about was that those idiots might not be able to resist and would sleep with the girls first.

Then he’d never get a good price for them.

He was annoyed—if he’d known, he would have gone himself.

Outside the tent, someone dragged the half-dead Zhang Yueyao past.

Xiao Lingye sneered and said to Song Yucheng, who was following behind,

“You’re too soft-hearted, actually letting her live.”

Song Yucheng paused, forcing a smile that didn’t reach his eyes.

“It’s not like we had any deep grudge. Besides, she’s tough.”

So why bother tormenting a woman to death?
