Chapter 71: Absolutely No Other Intentions
Wild and Dashing in the 80s
The director chuckled. “Hahaha, I forgot—look at my memory! Here’s what we’ll do: Yuan Hang, you take her over there, that way neither of you will be delayed.”
“Two photographers?” Su Qinghu was a bit confused. “Then who’s doing the interview?”
Usually, every assignment pairs one reporter and one photographer, right?
“You two can work it out. Practice makes perfect. I believe you can handle it.”
Su Qinghu had no choice but to nod. She glanced at Yuan Hang, who grinned. “I’m best at photography, Director, you know how my writing skills are. If you don’t mind—”
The director scratched his head as soon as he heard that. “Alright, alright, say no more.”
“Xiao Su, pick one of the topics from earlier.” After all, she was new, and doing two assignments in one day would be a challenge, so he’d lighten her load. “Do the other one tomorrow.”
Su Qinghu chose “Which exercise is least damaging to the joints?” If she had time, she’d tackle the other topic as well.
Swimming was definitely at the top of the list for joint-friendly exercise. She had her own little motive—she wanted to know which public swimming pool here was the cleanest, so she picked this topic.
The director nodded and moved on to the next person’s assignment.
The morning meeting was over in a flash—so fast that Su Qinghu felt a bit dazed. In her previous life, meetings that didn’t drag on for two hours didn’t even count as meetings...
After leaving the conference room, Yuan Hang asked Su Qinghu if she wanted to draft her interview outline in the office before heading out, or just think about it on the way and do it when they got there.
Su Qinghu replied, “I’ll do the interview outline on the way.”
These days, just contacting interviewees was a challenge. The easiest way was by phone, but both the department and the hospital only had a limited number of landlines. Even in their own department, you had to wait your turn, let alone at the hospital.
Even if you got through, whether the hospital was willing to accept interviews, and whether the doctors had time, were all up in the air.
Might as well just go in person—maybe you’d catch a doctor moving between clinic and ward and get the interview done right then.
Besides, she figured doctors wouldn’t refuse her topic.
Why was Su Qinghu so confident? That was easy—these days, in every park, you could see people practicing exercises, sitting or standing...
Yuan Hang and Su Qinghu headed out. On the way, he shared some photography tips and his own insights. Then he asked, “For the first aid topic, maybe we can do it together, and after we leave the hospital, we can go to the swimming pool. Sound good?”
“We’ll see when we get there,” Su Qinghu replied, not giving a direct answer. “We’ll have to coordinate with the doctors’ schedules, after all.”
In the newsroom, only doing one assignment a day was considered underperforming—usually people did two or three.
As a newcomer, she didn’t have any grand ambitions yet, so there was no need to steal the spotlight. As long as she did each assignment well, there was no need to chase quantity.
Yuan Hang looked her up and down. “How come you, a newbie, seem a bit... a bit...”
—A bit like an old hand.
But facing Su Qinghu’s bright, delicate face, he just couldn’t say those words out loud.
The new colleague was too good-looking—he couldn’t bring himself to use any negative adjectives in front of her.
“You mean, a bit down-to-earth?” Su Qinghu beamed, praising herself. “I don’t have many big strengths, but if I had to name one, I guess it’s being honest.”
Yuan Hang: “...Actually, I’m pretty honest too.”
They took a car to the hospital. When they arrived, they first went to pay their respects to the department head and, after getting permission, went to find the doctor.
Su Qinghu had already finished her interview outline on the way, so the interview itself wasn’t difficult, and the doctor even demonstrated some things during the process.
Yuan Hang was clearly a pro at photography—he didn’t need the doctor to pose or pay special attention, and still managed to capture great shots.
When they finished, he didn’t hold back, explaining why he chose certain shots, what he considered, the lighting, composition, and so on.
As Su Qinghu listened, her eyelids drooped a little. “With your way with words, how could you possibly not be good at interviews?”
“When I’m interested in something, my brain automatically comes up with the words I want,” Yuan Hang said, straightforward as ever. “Photography is what I love. Other things, not so much.”
Su Qinghu: “...”
Alright, playing hardball, huh?
“You love photography so much—you must have your own gear, right?” Su Qinghu asked.
Yuan Hang: “You want to use it? Or buy it?”
“Not buying for now, just want to borrow.” Su Qinghu was direct.
Yuan Hang: “I could lend it to you. What do you need it for? Want my help?”
“Oh, just to take pictures of my kid.” Su Qinghu smiled. “No need for your help.”
Yuan Hang was stunned. “You’re married? And you have a kid?!”
“Surprised?” Su Qinghu grinned. “I am married.”
As for whether she had a kid—she did, but that was nobody else’s business.
“Why did you get married so young?” Yuan Hang looked crestfallen. Just a moment ago, he’d thought they got along well and maybe he could try pursuing her. Now, all those thoughts vanished.
Su Qinghu: “Heaven only knows.”
Seriously, only heaven knew why she’d arrived in this world already married—but it wasn’t so bad.
Chen Lie’s looks were really something...
Whenever she saw him, she wanted to flirt a little, take advantage if she could. Unfortunately, he didn’t play along and kept his distance.
But that made it interesting—teasing him to see how long he could hold out.
“I was just thinking, maybe you could be my muse for life, and I could be your exclusive photographer,” Yuan Hang sighed, shaking his head. “Ah—”
Sure enough, the heavens were fair—giving him talent in photography, but making him unlucky in love.
Su Qinghu didn’t dwell on it. She just asked, “Which swimming pool are we going to next?”
Before he could answer, she added, “I want to go to a really clean one.”
“I want to go to—” Yuan Hang started, but Su Qinghu’s sudden serious expression made him stop. “What’s wrong?”
“Mr. Yuan, our assignment this time is to show people healthy ways to exercise, not to expose any scandals...”
Her reminder made Yuan Hang pause. He patted his head and laughed. “Force of habit, sorry about that.”
Yuan Hang led the way to the swimming pool. He was clearly very familiar with the place, and Su Qinghu observed as they walked in.
Yuan Hang seemed laid-back about everything, but when it came to his personal life, he had standards that weren’t immediately obvious.
If he was this familiar with the pool, he must come here often. That was good—meant the hygiene and facilities were probably up to par.
She could bring Da Dan and Er Dan (her kids) swimming on the weekend!
She wanted to capture photos of them splashing around in the water as keepsakes. When they grew up, she could show them and enrich their childhood memories."
