Chapter 164: The First Time Using a Shark Submarine to Rescue Someone
I Farm In The Apocalypse
Despite Jing Lai’s hopes that nothing else would go wrong, something did. Yesterday, a group of people came into the supermarket after being caught in the rain, bringing in a lot of red worms on their heads. Some people hadn’t even removed the red worms from earlier.
With the self-service dining opening for the first time, there were a lot of people.
Then, the red worms, which loved to jump around, got tangled in everything. It was a chaotic mess—whether you were there to eat or serving food, everyone got tangled up together and couldn’t move. The scene was...
The entire cafeteria turned into complete chaos. Some people were crying after being stepped on, others were wailing as their hair got tangled, and those who tried to help also got ensnared in the mess. The women with long hair were getting yanked around like they were being drawn and quartered—it hurt just watching.
Weiwei was one of the victims. Her gorgeous wavy hair was tangled with the hair of seven or eight men, all of whom were running in different directions. She was furious enough to want to kill them.
Only Jing Lai stood there calmly, her hair securely wrapped inside a rain hood. Weiwei, who had laughed at her earlier, was now staring in wide-eyed disbelief.
“My niece gave me an electric shaver. I’ll shave your heads clean. Everyone in my neighborhood has already shaved their heads bald.”
“No! I don’t want to shave my head!” Weiwei burst into tears, terrified that if she became ugly, her husband would leave her.
Jing Lai ignored her, picked up the shaver, and started shaving everyone's heads one by one.
Eventually, the situation was resolved. The supervisor even praised Jing Lai for her quick thinking and arranged for a dozen more shavers to be brought in, instructing the security guards at the entrance to shave everyone’s heads before they entered to receive food.
All those shiny bald heads—it was a comforting sight.
As for the red worms on the floor, they weren’t going to waste. Boil them in water, and voilà, you have a new soup dish. Since the hair was all their own, surely no one would mind, right?
“Let’s hope nothing goes wrong tomorrow!” the supervisor said.
Unfortunately, the very next day, a massive flood hit.
The “eggheads” were frantically climbing the stairs, the water already up to their knees and rising fast. The flood came with such force that there was nothing anyone could do. Outside, everything was pitch black—you couldn’t see a thing except for the glittering reflections of the water and the roaring flood.
Jing Lai sighed as she directed people to the upper floors and instructed the staff, “Move any floating materials like tables and wooden boards upstairs. If the flood reaches us here, we need something to stay afloat!”
The armed police sounded the alarms and were dispatched immediately. There was also a nearby oil base community with a population of over ten thousand. The flood had come so suddenly that no one had been prepared. After all, it had only been raining for three days—how could there be a flood already?
At the same time, the Chinese government issued a red alert, detecting a rapid rise in sea levels. People in coastal areas were urged to evacuate to higher ground immediately. The message was clear: with sea levels rising this fast, many islands could potentially be submerged.
The Wucheng government also issued an emergency notification through the national data system, advising all residents in the city center to evacuate northward immediately, regardless of whether their homes had been flooded. Those living in higher areas, like Xishan District and the northern region, were advised to stay put for now but remain on alert.
...
Wang Qiqi: “@Everyone, there’s a massive flood at the Aijia Supermarket! It’s headed toward the city center. I wonder if we’ll be affected here. A neighbor went to buy food and got trapped at Aijia. I heard the water has already reached the third floor—it’s that bad!”
Wang Cuihua sent a voice message: “Thank goodness we planned to go get food later this afternoon.”
Luo Zhu: “What if the flood comes our way? Where do we go?”
Wang Qiqi: “Run to the top floor! Where else? It’s pouring rain outside.”
Jing Shu stretched lazily, satisfied that she had made all the necessary preparations. She was just about to relax with some cucumber slices on her face and fried chicken in her hand when Wu You’ai rushed in, panicked.
“Jing Shu, my mom is trapped at Aijia Supermarket! She just called and said the water is rising fast—it’s already over the third floor! The rescue teams are swamped... Can I borrow your submarine? I’ll go get her!”
Jing Shu smacked her forehead. She had remembered that her dad’s livestock farm was in Xishan, and her mom’s agricultural office was in the development zone—both safe from the flood.
But she had completely forgotten that Aijia Supermarket was at the flood’s entry point, where all the water was pouring into Wucheng’s basin, turning half the city into a water world.
“Don’t worry. I equipped your mom with an automatic life vest. Even if the flood reaches the top of the building, she’ll be safe for a while. You don’t know how to operate the submarine, and that could be dangerous. I’ll go get her myself.”
Wu Youai clutched her clothes tightly, her knuckles white. “Be careful on the way... If it gets too dangerous, don’t push yourself. If anything happens to you, Grandma will kill me.”
“I’m not one to take risks. Don’t worry, I’ll be back soon. Just don’t tell Grandma yet.”
After donning her raincoat and strapping on two automatic life vests, Jing Shu set off in her shark submarine. She couldn’t help but feel grateful to Su Mali—without her, Jing Shu wouldn’t know how to handle today’s situation.
In her previous life, she had never shopped at Aijia Supermarket, so she hadn’t experienced this flood firsthand. It was pure luck that this time, she had the equipment she needed.
After just ten kilometers, Jing Shu’s shark submarine moved from land into water. The rain was torrential, and the floodwaters were immense. In the dim light, Jing Shu’s experience was far from pleasant. The floodwaters relentlessly battered the submarine. Though the shark submarine was moving against the current, the resistance was immense, making it hard to control. She also had to be careful not to collide with any buildings.
Luckily, Jing Shu had night vision and a steady hand, otherwise, she would have crashed into a telephone pole in the darkness.
By the time she reached Aijia Supermarket, the entire area was submerged in water. Even the telephone poles were gone from sight. Only the roof of the supermarket remained visible, crowded with people—bald heads shining in the dim light.
And the water was still surging into Wucheng. Jing Shu estimated that the water in the city center must have reached thigh level by now. In her previous life, it was around this time that the government issued evacuation orders. Her family had fled in a panic, leaving everything behind.
But the most ridiculous part was that some people, relying on the height of their apartment buildings, thought the flood couldn’t possibly reach them. In less than a day, however, even buildings that were dozens of meters tall were completely submerged.
Wucheng’s basin had such a low elevation that even the tallest buildings were no match for the flood. By the time the water poured in, the entire city center was underwater, and Wucheng had turned into Lake Wucheng.
...
Jing Lai, who was trapped in Aijia Supermarket, stood on the roof, steadfast and calm. A woman named Weiwei, with her glamorous curls now gone, was begging Jing Lai.
“Jing Lai, please let me wear your life vest! You’re a good swimmer, you won’t be in danger. My husband knows someone, and they’re on their way to rescue us. We’ll all be saved soon.”
“Uh-huh.”
“So you agree?”
“Nope.”
“Then why did you say ‘uh-huh’?”
“Uh-huh.”
“Jing Lai, I’m begging you! At least let me wear your raincoat, okay?”
“Uh-huh.”
“I see now why your husband divorced you,” Weiwei snapped, gritting her teeth. This woman was completely immune to reason.
Smack!
A heavy slap landed on Weiwei’s cheek. Jing Lai calmly replied, “Maybe it’s because I hit him like this too many times.”
Weiwei: “...” Oh no, she’s terrifying.
