Chapter 170: Does This Gun Look Like the 10 Yuan You Owe Me? (Monthly Vote Bonus)
I Farm In The Apocalypse
"What? I just want to ask—does anyone else want to eat my chicken? You? And you? What, you think you can just take it by force if I don't give it to you? Go ahead, try and steal it!"
"Help! The chicken is killing people!"
"Why are you all just standing there? Help us out!" The surrounding crowd took a collective step back, not daring to get involved. They had only come to find a place to sleep, not to get into a fight.
Jing Shu heard Jing Nai swearing up a storm and rushed over with Wu Youai after parking the shark submarine. A crowd of curious neighborhood residents followed closely behind to see what the commotion was about. Sure enough, it was the people from the villa community.
Pushing through the crowd, they found Jing Nai standing confidently, hands on her hips, shouting at five people sprawled on the ground, moaning in pain. They had dared to mess with Jing Nai's precious chicken, and now they were paying the price.
Meanwhile, the family’s prized chicken was pecking viciously at one man's face, especially his mouth. The chicken, relentless and precise, ignored the blood pouring from the man’s injuries.
The crowd gasped in astonishment, exchanging murmurs and nervous glances. Their view of the family instantly changed—now filled with caution and fear.
Jing Dad, like a loyal sidekick, stood by Jing Nai’s side, holding a flashlight for her while guarding his mother. Jing Grandpa and Jing Mom, meanwhile, stood ready with their crossbows. After surviving months of chaos, the family was no longer soft and weak—they were prepared to stand their ground, even against larger groups.
If anyone dared lay a finger on them, they would retaliate without hesitation. Jing Shu had drilled this mindset into them countless times.
Jing Shu sighed in relief. It seemed she had arrived a little late—the fight was already over.
Just then...
"Move aside! Move aside! What's going on here? Who dares to stir up trouble in the evacuation shelter? Zhou Dasheng! Zhou Dasheng, where are you? Weren't you supposed to come over here and talk to the neighborhood coordinator about making some space?"
Flashlights cut through the crowd as another group arrived on the scene. Leading them was a young man with a square face and a huge mouth that seemed to take up half his face when he spoke.
Jing Shu squinted—she recognized him!
This was Zhou Dafu, a high school classmate who had borrowed 10 yuan from the class fund and never paid it back. After graduation, she had chased him down and beaten him up, warning him to never cross her path again—or she’d beat him every time she saw him, until he repaid the debt.
Zhou Dafu had been a no-show at all the class reunions since then, but it seemed he had been doing quite well for himself in the apocalypse.
"Dafu, we're over here! Hurry and save us! This chicken is killing us!"
"Mmm... mmmph!" The man who had been pecked had his mouth in shreds.
"What’s going on? What kind of chicken is so badass that it can take down five people?"
Zhou Dafu grinned, flashing his yellow teeth as he looked at the flailing chicken. His eyes lit up, and he practically drooled.
Ah, those strong legs... Ah, those juicy wings... Ah, that plump breast... And those thick claws—it must taste so good!
The people on the ground moaned, while one short man quickly scrambled up and hid behind Zhou Dafu. "Brother Dafu, I was just trying to catch something wild for Big Brother Da Heng, but this family here isn’t playing fair—they set their chicken on us to kill us!"
Zhou Dafu swallowed his saliva and nodded in approval. "An animal that hurts people must be dealt with. Let's catch it and take it to the police station to see how it should be handled. You guys, go!"
Before Zhou Dasheng could stop him, the seven people behind Zhou Dafu rushed forward, eager to get their hands on some meat after a year of deprivation.
Zhou Dasheng covered his face, mumbling, "Brother Dafu, this chicken isn't like other chickens..."
"A chicken’s a chicken, right?" Zhou Dafu said, just as the chicken launched itself into the air. Within seconds, the aggressive bird had pecked all of them to the ground, leaving them groaning in pain.
The onlookers gasped again. This chicken’s combat skills were terrifying.
Jing Nai, hands on her hips, shouted, "I hate people like you who try to act innocent after doing something wrong! Let’s see who dares to take my chicken now. I don’t believe there’s no law and order left in the world!" It helped, of course, that the chicken was holding its own.
Zhou Dafu gritted his teeth, noticing the crossbows pointed in his direction, as well as the energy vehicle parked behind the family. It was clear these people weren’t to be trifled with. He realized he might have picked the wrong target today. But thinking of his cousin Zhou Da Heng, Zhou Dafu resolved to get the chicken—his cousin wasn’t someone to cross lightly.
He pulled out a gun. "Assaulting an officer carries serious consequences. This chicken has violated Red Mountain’s regulations. I have the authority to..."
Zhou Dafu’s voice trailed off.
A gun was now pointed at his head. Zhou Dafu turned his head mechanically but could only see someone wrapped tightly in rain gear.
"Zhou Dafu, you still owe me 10 yuan. I told you—don’t let me run into you again, or I’d beat you every time until you paid me back. Remember?"
That voice...
Zhou Dafu’s face contorted into a look of despair. "You... You're Jing Shu?"
Zhou Dafu had borrowed money from many people in high school, but only this curse of a woman had hounded him relentlessly. She even had a nasty habit of kicking where it hurt. He had avoided her for so many years—how had he ended up running into her again?
"That’s right, 10 yuan. Today, you’ll pay me back with your life," Jing Shu’s voice grew cold.
"Wha-what? It's just 10 yuan! I’ll pay you back 100 virtual credits! Just put the gun down." Zhou Dafu cautiously tried to push the barrel away. The cold metal pressing against his temple told him this was no toy. He wasn’t about to gamble with his life.
"This chicken is mine. Got it?"
The chicken let out a triumphant cluck as if to confirm.
Zhou Dafu opened and closed his mouth, suddenly realizing what was going on.
"Where’s your neighborhood coordinator? I... I just came to ask if we could use some of this space. This cave is huge, and it’s a waste to only have a few people in here. We’ve got hundreds crammed into Cave 6—it’s so inconvenient..."
Zhou Dafu tried to shift the conversation, hoping to bring in someone in charge to smooth things over.
"I’m the coordinator, and no, you can’t. Now, get lost," Wu Youai replied coldly.
"...Well, alright then. A whole family, huh?"
Zhou Dafu’s face burned with humiliation. He usually acted like a big shot in front of people like this. But today, he had been thoroughly embarrassed. Still, he’d regroup and go find his cousin Da Heng.
"Alright, alright. I’ll leave."
"Wait. Does this gun look like the 10 yuan you owe me?"
"It does. It really does. I’ll pay you back now."
With a miserable look, Zhou Dafu left with Zhou Dasheng and their battered comrades. He had come for a chicken and left with nothing but a loss—and even had to give up his gun, which had been a gift from his cousin.
Those who had been slow to leave were pecked a few more times by the chicken. The cave echoed with their cries of pain.
When the crowd had cleared, Jing Shu turned to her group. "So, how are we dividing the sleeping areas?"
The other residents quickly moved to make space, leaving a wide berth between themselves and the family, firmly deciding to stay at least 100 meters away.
