Chapter 67: An Eye-Burning Scene
Natural Disasters and the End of the World
The two of them wandered around the area again.
Gu Zhiyu had been staying on Mount Luo’an all this time, so this was his first time truly experiencing how much the outside world had changed.
They even ran into a group of roadside bandits.
Gu Zhiyu didn’t bother with any nonsense—he simply dealt with them with a few bullets.
Everywhere in the city, people looked sallow and emaciated.
Having grown up in an era of abundance, Gu Zhiyu was used to seeing chubby kids with greasy faces, stuffed full of oily takeout.
But he had never seen people starving to such an extent.
The streets were filled with walking skeletons.
Not the kind of skinny beauties who’d overdone their dieting, but people who were literally skin and bones—just a thin layer of skin stretched over their skeletons.
Those who had been a bit plumper before were faring slightly better, but the ones who’d always been thin now looked like living skulls.
He frowned, and couldn’t help but picture An Nan’s plump, radiant face in his mind.
Her skin was like creamy jade, her eyes bright and lively, lips full and healthy, and her long hair smooth as silk.
Though she was slender, her body was strong and toned—when she flexed her arms, you could clearly see the muscle definition.
She must be living quite well.
Looking around, Gu Zhiyu suddenly lost interest. “Let’s go back.”
…
An Nan and her group returned to their apartment complex and found that the water level had dropped a bit more.
It wasn’t a huge difference, but now that the water was almost down to the sixth-floor windows, they had to grab onto the seventh-floor window ledge to climb inside the building.
It was a lot more effort than before, but any drop in the water level was good news.
They struggled to carry bags of fertilizer into the building, then hauled them up to the 14th floor in batches.
As they passed the 8th floor, they heard some rather suggestive noises coming from inside one of the apartments.
“Xiao Bai, louder! Don’t be shy, I love hearing it.”
This was followed by a series of obscene sounds.
The group was carrying the second batch of fertilizer past the door when the noises startled them so much they almost dropped everything.
Hearing Bai Wenbin’s familiar voice from inside, An Nan’s stomach churned with disgust.
Fugui, who had never seen much of the world, was drawn to the door of apartment 801 by the sounds, standing there to listen intently.
An Nan’s face turned green. “An Fugui, don’t eavesdrop! Get back here!”
She called the dog back, thinking she’d have to give Fugui a thorough bath when they got home—standing that close to the door, it felt like he’d been tainted by those noises.
They made several more trips up and down, and the sounds inside never stopped.
Finally, three minutes later, the noise abruptly ceased.
As An Nan and the others were carrying the last batch of fertilizer past the 8th floor, the door to 801 suddenly swung open.
Qian Ying’er, looking dazed and silly, ran out.
“Hehehe! Going out to play~ Going out to play~”
Instinctively, everyone glanced inside the apartment.
They saw Bai Wenbin, stark naked, sprawled over the dining table, while behind him stood a burly, bearded man weighing over 200 pounds, buckling his belt.
…
It was truly an eye-burning sight!
An Nan thought to herself, Am I going to get a stye from this??
At that moment, Bai Wenbin, panting heavily, looked up and met the three pairs of eyes at the door. He froze.
Then, realizing what had happened, he was overwhelmed with shame.
He let out a shrill scream, scrambling to grab his pants from the floor, his hands shaking as he tried to pull them on.
The bearded man also noticed the people at the door, but he didn’t care. Instead, he grinned and gave Bai Wenbin’s butt a loud slap.
The “smack” echoed through the room.
To Bai Wenbin, that slap felt like it landed right on his face, striking him to the core.
Blushing furiously, he pulled on his pants, tears welling in his eyes.
The bearded man, having finished buckling his belt, left with a satisfied grin. As he walked out, he licked his lips and muttered, “Brother Zhang was right—he’s pretty good.”
An Nan didn’t care who this Brother Zhang was—she just felt that Bai Wenbin’s image in her mind had become even more disgusting.
She’d known for a while that he was selling himself to survive, but hearing about it and seeing it with her own eyes were two very different things.
It was even more revolting than she’d imagined.
But at the same time, she felt a surge of satisfaction, as if she’d gotten her revenge.
She curled her lips into a smirk, deciding to pour a little more salt on his wounded pride:
“Bai Wenbin, your skills aren’t bad! That guy seemed pretty satisfied with you just now.”
Bai Wenbin was mortified, wishing he could crawl into a hole and disappear.
He was a PhD student, admired by countless female college students, with a bright future ahead of him.
And now, he was like a stray dog, being bullied by some uneducated brute just for a bite to eat.
Worst of all, the person he least wanted to know about this had witnessed everything.
At that moment, he felt worse than if he’d been killed.
He let out a wail from deep in his chest, scrambled to the door, and slammed it shut.
Then he slid to the floor and broke down in helpless sobs.
Hearing the crying from inside, Zhao Ping’an and Chu Peipei both rubbed their arms, feeling a wave of goosebumps.
For some reason, after witnessing that eye-burning scene, every time they heard his voice now, they couldn’t help but think of those eunuchs in palace dramas.
An Nan, on the other hand, was in a great mood.
She called the others to keep moving the supplies. Once they finished and got home, she collapsed onto the sofa and let out a long, satisfied sigh.
Often, the people who know you best aren’t your family, but your enemies.
Having lived through two lifetimes, An Nan understood Bai Wenbin all too well.
He was greedy, vain, unscrupulous, but also very good at pretending otherwise.
At the end of the day, what he cared about most was his pride.
His good looks and academic background gave him a false sense of superiority.
He thought he was destined to be above everyone else. Even when he pursued An Nan, he never truly respected her—he just saw her as a stepping stone on his path to success.
For someone so vain and arrogant, being stripped of all his dignity and forced to expose his weakness and incompetence in front of others was like having his heart cut out.
Nothing could be more painful for him.
Thinking back on his breakdown, An Nan happily opened a bottle of red wine for herself.
Then she took out an eye fillet steak, French escargot, tomato pasta, and black truffle ham salad from her storage space.
She hummed a tune as she dug in.
Fugui tilted his head, watching his owner: The boss is in such a good mood today!
Is it because she met that handsome guy?
Fugui recalled Gu Zhiyu’s face and stomped his feet in excitement.
I really hope Sister Nan is so happy that she brings the handsome guy home to live with us~
Meanwhile, Bai Wenbin, after crying his heart out for a while, suddenly remembered something. He looked up, eyes swollen.
“Qian. Ying. Er!”
He gritted his teeth, clenching his fists.
The silly Qian Ying’er ran around the hallway for a while before finally coming home.
As soon as she walked in, she saw Bai Wenbin glaring at her, eyes bloodshot.
She instinctively took two steps back, forcing a nervous smile, but his expression only grew angrier."
