Chapter 71: Please Come With Me
Natural Disasters and the End of the World
An Nan didn’t open the door. Instead, she asked through it, “What do you want?”
Hearing a response at last, the person outside immediately said,
“You’re An Nan, right? Someone’s accused you of intentional homicide. Please come with me and cooperate with the investigation!”
An Nan still didn’t open the door. She watched him closely through the peephole.
By now, some neighbors had been drawn over by the commotion, peering from the landing between the 13th and 14th floors.
“Hey! Someone finally called the cops on her. The police are here to deal with this she-devil!”
“Great! Once the police take her away, we can check out her apartment and see how much stuff she’s hoarding.”
“Heaven’s finally watching! Someone’s finally putting this arrogant woman in her place! She killed the people across from me—I can testify in court!”
“Hmph! Let’s see what she does now. No matter how arrogant she is, she can’t go against the authorities, can she?”
“I’ve had enough of her. So young, and yet she has so many supplies—why?”
That’s just how people are—resentful of those who have, and mocking of those who don’t.
Since the disaster, everyone looked pale and gaunt—except An Nan, who remained rosy-cheeked and healthy, clearly living well.
Not only that, but she’d fiercely driven off anyone who tried to covet her supplies.
Just the other day, people saw her return from the market, bags full every time. It made their teeth itch with envy.
Now that it looked like she was finally going to get her comeuppance, everyone was excited. More and more people gathered to watch the spectacle.
Some even jeered from the sidelines:
“Officer, you’re finally here! This she-devil has been running amok in our community!”
“That’s right, officer! We can all testify—she’s killed a lot of people!”
“I heard she’s a wanted criminal, a psycho killer even before the disaster. You’d better arrest her quick!”
With the police present, the neighbors who’d long resented An Nan were no longer afraid, piling on accusations and eagerly awaiting her downfall.
The young policeman turned around, righteous and stern, raising his hand to silence the crowd.
“Everyone, please quiet down. Don’t interfere with my investigation.”
Then, turning back to the door, he said, “Ms. An Nan, please open the door immediately and come with me to the station to cooperate with our investigation.”
Inside, Chu Peipei was extremely nervous. She looked at An Nan anxiously.
“The disaster just ended—how could someone report you to the police already?”
She tried to comfort her, “Don’t be afraid. I can testify for you. It was those people who bullied you first. You were just defending yourself.”
An Nan chuckled lightly. “What do I have to be afraid of?”
Then she called out through the door, “I’m going to count to three. Leave my doorway immediately, or don’t blame me for not giving you a chance.”
Her words stunned everyone.
Not only the neighbors outside, but even Chu Peipei behind her was shocked.
This woman was just too tough!
She really didn’t care about anyone’s face...
The man outside frowned at her words.
“An Nan! Resisting will only make things worse for you! Don’t do anything foolish!”
“Three.” An Nan ignored him and began counting.
Young policeman: “Open the door right now!”
“Two.”
“Or don’t blame me for getting rough!”
“One.”
As An Nan finished counting, a mechanism clicked—the peephole slid aside, revealing a firing port.
An Nan raised her nail gun and fired without hesitation.
A nail struck the “policeman” right between the eyes.
His eyes widened in disbelief, but before he could react, several more nails hit him.
His head was riddled with nails as he fell backward.
With a heavy thud, his body crashed to the ground.
“Ahhhhhh!”
The crowd watching erupted into screams.
“She’s killed again!”
“She attacked a cop!”
“She killed a policeman!”
At that moment, the stairwell door on the 14th floor suddenly swung open.
A beautiful girl stood there, her face cold and venomous, brandishing the nail gun menacingly.
“Shut up! You’re all so noisy!”
Instantly, everyone fell silent.
She dared to attack even the police—who would dare make a sound now?
An Nan glanced at each person in turn. Whenever her gaze landed on someone, they quickly looked away.
She said coldly, “What are you all still doing here? Want to join him?”
The crowd panicked, pushing and shoving as they scrambled to escape.
An Nan finally felt the world was quiet again. Satisfied, she closed the door.
Even Chu Peipei was stunned.
She stammered, “A-An Nan, you’ve really done it this time!”
Was An Nan crazy? How could she attack a policeman?
But An Nan looked utterly unconcerned.
“Let me explain something to you. Just because someone rides a white horse doesn’t mean they’re a prince. And just because someone wears a uniform doesn’t mean they’re a real cop.”
Chu Peipei was stunned, then her eyes widened. “You mean… he was a fake?”
How could that be? He looked so upright and official.
An Nan nodded. “Real police in China never act alone—they’re always in pairs or more. And this guy dawdled around forever and never even showed his ID.”
Chu Peipei was still nervous. “But just based on that, you’re sure he was a fake? What if he was real? That would be a serious crime!”
“Of course not.” An Nan tapped her own shoulder. “The biggest giveaway was his shoddy police rank badge.”
“Never mind the crooked lines—just look at the rank…”
She sneered. “A first-class inspector in his twenties? What a joke.”
Chu Peipei suddenly understood.
No wonder!
An Nan might be ruthless, but she was always measured—she’d never just kill a real cop out of the blue.
She’d been scared out of her wits just now, thinking An Nan had lost her mind.
But now, recalling the fake cop’s appearance and An Nan’s explanation…
Yeah…
There were too many holes. He deserved what he got.
She didn’t know much about police ranks, but since An Nan had acted so decisively, she was probably right.
Chu Peipei breathed a sigh of relief and looked at An Nan with admiration. “An Nan, you’re amazing. If it were me, I’d have been scared stiff and just gone with him…”
Just thinking about it made her shudder. “If I’d really gone with him, who knows what terrible things might have happened!”
An Nan rolled her eyes.
There was no way she’d have gone with him.
The only one leaving was him—on his way to reincarnation.
An Nan hadn’t hesitated for a second. After all, people thought the disaster was over and order was being restored, yet this guy still dared to risk impersonating a cop. Clearly, his intentions were anything but simple—he was probably after her life.
Of course he had to die.
An Nan greeted Chu Peipei, then went back inside to finish her meal.
Chu Peipei had planned to go out and deal with the fake cop’s body, but on second thought, she decided to just leave it there—to give those annoying neighbors a good scare. Then she turned and went back inside as well."
