Chapter 73: On the Run
Natural Disasters and the End of the World
Sun Peng’s original intention was to provoke the siblings into making the first move against An Nan.
He hadn’t expected that Bai Wenbin had already been scared out of his wits by her; right now, his legs felt weak and shaky.
She dared to kill a police officer, yet she’d still kept the two of them alive all this time?
A strong sense of unease lingered in Bai Wenbin’s heart. His back felt cold, and he couldn’t shake the feeling that something bad was about to happen.
He watched Sun Peng and his companion leave, then exchanged a glance with Qian Ying’er. Neither of them looked too good.
Qian Ying’er frowned and spoke up, “Wenbin, do you think An Nan is crazy? She even dared to attack the police?”
Bai Wenbin’s mind was a mess.
“How did the police suddenly come looking for her? Was she reported by someone already?”
Qian Ying’er nodded. “Probably. That bitch has made plenty of enemies.”
Thinking of this, she smiled smugly. “Looks like she’s in for it now! Killing a cop is a whole new level of crime—maybe soon a whole truckload of SWAT officers will show up to arrest her.”
But Bai Wenbin wasn’t as optimistic as she was.
“Judging by her attitude, I doubt she’ll go down without a fight… If she snaps, we might get dragged down with her. Maybe we should get out of here and lay low?”
“Why should we!” Qian Ying’er’s voice grew shrill. “I want to see her downfall with my own eyes!”
Bai Wenbin frowned tightly. “You can visit her in jail and laugh at her after she’s caught! For now, listen to me—let’s go hide out for a while.”
Qian Ying’er retorted, “If you want to go, go! I’m not leaving. I have to see her get taken away by the police with my own eyes.”
Bai Wenbin could only sigh helplessly. “Well, I’m leaving then. Be careful.”
Seeing her cousin acting so cowardly, Qian Ying’er was furious. “When did you get so scared? Is An Nan really that terrifying?”
Bai Wenbin nodded. “Terrifying. I can’t afford to mess with her.”
The two argued all the way home. Bai Wenbin split their supplies in half, leaving a share for his cousin and taking the rest for himself as he prepared to leave.
Qian Ying’er called after him, “Where are you going to hide?”
“To the place I used to rent. I still have two spare keys.”
Qian Ying’er was puzzled. “But you already ended the lease. Isn’t someone else living there now?”
Bai Wenbin replied, “I just moved out, then the disaster hit. No way it got rented out again so quickly.”
Qian Ying’er still tried to stop him.
“Even if it’s not rented, who knows if someone else has taken it over during the floods? You can’t just barge in like that.”
Bai Wenbin thought for a moment.
“You’re right, that’s possible. I shouldn’t take so much stuff with me all at once.”
He took out just enough food for a day. “I’ll just bring a little and check it out first. If someone’s there, I’ll come back. If not, I’ll stay.
If I don’t come back, could you bring the rest of my stuff over tomorrow?”
Qian Ying’er: …
She couldn’t talk her cousin out of it, so she could only nod in agreement.
Watching him leave, she couldn’t help but mutter, “Unbelievable. My cousin’s actually been scared like this by that bitch!”
Bai Wenbin left with his backpack, thinking that once Qian Ying’er came over tomorrow, he’d make her stay too—no matter what, they’d only move back after An Nan was brought to justice.
Even though he’d used Qian Ying’er as a punching bag during the disaster, beating her daily, now that it was all over and she’d regained her senses, she was still his cousin after all. He had to do his best to keep her alive.
That woman An Nan never played by the rules.
He’d figured it out by now: the reason she’d kept him and his cousin alive, despite being a ruthless killer, was to torment them slowly.
If she was really cornered by the authorities, she’d definitely take them down with her—no way she’d let them walk away free and easy.
So, hiding out was the right move.
At that moment, An Nan had just finished her meal at home and sneezed twice in a row.
“Who’s talking about me behind my back?”
Fugui, hearing her sneeze, quietly scooted a little farther away, lifting his butt as he moved.
Is my owner catching a cold? Hope she doesn’t give it to me…
An Nan noticed his little maneuver and was both amused and annoyed.
“Oh! You ungrateful little dog, are you looking down on me?”
With that, she scooped Fugui up and smothered him with kisses all over his face.
Fugui squeezed his eyes shut and feebly tried to push her away with his paws.
After a bit of roughhousing, An Nan put him down and went to the window to sun her back and recharge.
If she really was catching a cold, a bit of sun and sweat might help boost her yang energy.
By tomorrow afternoon, the temperature would start to rise—the extreme heat was coming, and soon she wouldn’t be able to sunbathe even if she wanted to.
Just as she reached the window, she caught a glimpse of a familiar figure out of the corner of her eye. Looking closer, it was actually Bai Wenbin.
He had a backpack on, taking tiny steps, walking awkwardly as if he was clenching his butt.
An Nan couldn’t help but laugh: Is this guy so diligent he’s developed an occupational hazard?
She remembered that in her previous life, when the extreme heat first hit, Bai Wenbin got heatstroke and suffered terribly, barely surviving in the end.
But this time, there’d be no such luck.
Heatstroke would be the last suffering he’d endure. She’d tormented them enough—time to send the siblings on their way.
The next day, as usual, An Nan was doing her Baduanjin exercises facing the window when she suddenly saw Qian Ying’er appear downstairs with a backpack.
Not only that, she was dragging two suitcases.
An Nan immediately stopped.
What’s going on?
Ever since Qian Ying’er lost her mind, she’d just giggled foolishly every day, running and stumbling everywhere, never walking properly.
Now she was calmly dragging two suitcases out the door?
An Nan stared at her for a moment, quickly realizing:
Qian Ying’er had regained her wits.
And judging by her appearance, she was trying to run away?
Yesterday, Bai Wenbin had also left the complex with a backpack… She didn’t know why the siblings were leaving separately, or why Qian Ying’er was the one carrying all the luggage.
But running away? That wouldn’t do.
She’d kept these two little mice around for her own amusement, and now they wanted to escape her grasp?
An Nan looked up at the blazing red sun in the sky.
It’s getting hot—time to send you on your way.
Luckily, she was already dressed in gym clothes suitable for going out, so she didn’t have to change. She just slipped on her shoes at the door, grabbed her bayonet, and set off in pursuit.
Qian Ying’er’s injuries hadn’t fully healed, so she wasn’t moving fast.
Dragging her suitcases, she cursed her cousin in her heart.
So annoying!
An Nan was about to be in deep trouble, and instead of staying in the complex to watch the drama, he insisted on hiding elsewhere.
Now she had to lug his stuff all the way to him.
If An Nan got arrested by the police while she was gone, wouldn’t she miss the whole show?
Full of resentment, she hurried along, completely unaware that someone was quietly following behind her."
