Chapter 13: Midnight Sirens
Picking Up Trash in Another World and Bringing It Back to the Apocalypse
After seeing Dr. Li off, Sang Chu collapsed back onto her bed.
Tu You hopped over to her side and asked, “What’s wrong with you? Didn’t you just wake up?”
“I don’t know, I just feel so tired! I’ve dumped everything onto you, so you should be able to handle it all, right?”
Tu You replied, “Of course!”
“Ha…” Sang Chu let out a huge yawn. “Then I’m going to sleep a bit more, okay?”
She was just too exhausted—her eyes could barely stay open. In a daze, she drifted back to sleep.
—
In the middle of the night,
She heard a siren, followed by Tu You’s anxious voice: “Wake up, Ah Chu! I have to go back now!”
“Wake up!!”
So tired! Sang Chu couldn’t even open her eyes. She just turned over and went right back to sleep.
……
Lu Minle and Mu Xue were fleeing toward the city wall.
Under the massive blood-red moon, the mutated plants had become jagged wooden barricades.
Mu Xue was wearing Lu Minle’s jacket, anxiously eyeing the mutated plants ahead. “Minle, do we really have to go up there? Aren’t those mutated plants super dangerous?”
“My ability’s about to run out. I don’t know how much longer I’ll survive. I can’t stay here any longer. Instead of going back, I’d rather take a chance!”
Every time she saw Mu Xue, she felt a surge of anger. That damned dog, Wu Feng, had already been beaten to a pulp, yet he was still alive!
“Alright, I’ll go up first!”
Mu Xue didn’t want to be a burden, so she climbed up first. If the mutated plants turned out to be dangerous, at least Lu Minle would have a chance to escape.
“There! They’re over there!”
Wu Feng’s henchmen spotted the disappearing figures of Lu Minle and Mu Xue and immediately rushed toward them.
Wu Feng got the news and started shooting wildly. “Don’t let them get away! That’s Lu Minle!”
“Xiao Xue, run!”
Lu Minle hurried to intercept Wu Feng’s attacks, but all of Wu Feng’s bullets were condensed from energy and could barely be blocked, leaving him struggling.
Mu Xue shouted, “Minle, hurry up!”
The mutated plants were huge. She tried to pull Lu Minle up, but he said, “You go first!”
In the apocalypse, all the city walls had been reinforced and raised.
Mu Xue yelled, “You have to come up with me, or I’ll go back down!”
Wu Feng heard her and sneered, “Don’t worry, sweetheart, you’re not getting away!”
“Get them!”
With a command, everyone charged at them. The mutated plant was still on the city wall, and there was a gap between the wall and the ground. Originally, he could have climbed up, but now, with all those people watching hungrily from below, it was too dangerous.
“Come on, hurry up!” urged Mu Xue.
Gritting his teeth, Lu Minle wrapped himself in his power and quickly climbed up the giant mutated plant. Mu Xue grabbed his hand and they ran up together.
Bullets kept whizzing past them, forcing them to dodge as they ran.
Bang! A bullet hit Lu Minle in the back.
He bit his lip hard, refusing to make a sound.
He used his body to shield Mu Xue, and by the time they finally reached the top, Lu Minle’s face was deathly pale, his body as cold as if he’d been soaked in icy water.
“Xiao Xue, I’ll hold them off. You climb over first. We’ll talk once you’re out of the city!”
“What about you?”
“I…” I might not make it out.
But Lu Minle didn’t say it out loud. He just thought, since that man is immortal, Mu Xue is safer outside the city than inside. “I’ll be right behind you.”
Wu Feng sneered, “He’s not getting out. My bullet hit him—he’s as good as dead!”
Mu Xue: “What?”
She looked at Lu Minle in horror and, sure enough, felt the blood soaking his back. Mu Xue’s eyes filled with tears as she stammered, “You’re bleeding so much… What should we do?”
Lu Minle tried to steady his voice. “It’s nothing, just a scratch. You go first, I’ll follow!”
Wu Feng called out, “Sweetheart, if you come down and spend the night with me, I’ll save your precious boyfriend. How about it?”
His smug voice was like a predator waiting for its prey to walk right into its trap.
Lu Minle deliberately ignored Wu Feng’s taunt and focused on using his power to build a dirt bridge connecting to the city wall. “Go, now.”
Bang bang bang—
A group of people fired wildly at the dirt bridge, bullets tearing it apart.
Lu Minle’s power was exhausted and the backlash hit him hard—he coughed up a mouthful of blood.
“Minle!”
Mu Xue quickly caught his collapsing body. “Lu Minle! Are you okay?”
“Lu Minle?!”
The unconscious Lu Minle couldn’t even comfort Mu Xue, no matter what she did.
Only now did Mu Xue realize his back was a bloody mess.
She gritted her teeth and shouted at Wu Feng, “Go get a doctor, now!”
Wu Feng laughed, “Sure, sweetheart, come down first and I’ll get someone.”
“You get a doctor first! If anything happens to him, I’ll never forgive you!”
Wu Feng sneered coldly. He had no intention of letting this bitch go. If Lu Minle hadn’t been a powerful ability user, he would’ve died from Mu Xue’s earlier attack.
Now the tables had turned, and he was going to play them to death!
Boom—
A fierce burst of fire exploded, blowing a huge crater in the ground. Wu Feng and his men were forced to retreat.
By the time he came back to his senses, the mutated plant was gone—and so were the people!
……
Mu Xue blinked in disbelief as Sang Chu handed her a set of clothes. “Hurry up and get dressed. It’s me, can’t you tell?”
“Sang Sang?”
“Yeah.”
“Sang Sang?!”
“Why are you calling my name like you’re summoning a ghost?”
“...Where the hell did you go? I thought I’d lost you for a whole night!”
A whole night? But she’d clearly spent a month in that weird world!
Sang Chu had no idea what was going on with Tu You.
Mu Xue, unable to hold back any longer, threw herself into Sang Chu’s arms and burst into tears, finally letting out all the fear she’d bottled up over the past night. Through her sobs, she cried, “Lu Minle was shot by that bastard Wu Feng, he’s bleeding so much, you have to check on him!”
Still sniffling, Mu Xue let Sang Chu push her into the guest room down the hall.
“I’ll go take care of him. There are towels and clean clothes inside—take a shower and change. We’ll talk after.”
Mu Xue had seen Sang Chu flying through the sky on some strange A-shaped thing, wielding a weird weapon to attack Wu Feng. She knew Sang Chu had had some kind of adventure, so even though she was curious about where all this stuff came from, she obediently took the clothes and went to shower and change.
When she came out, Sang Chu had already finished tending to Lu Minle’s wounds and put a strange device on his hand.
“Sang Sang, what’s that?”
“A portable medical device, for emergencies. Don’t worry, I’ve got medicine for you too.”
“Okay, but first, you have to tell me—what the hell is going on?!”"
