Chapter 75: Chapter 75: Who in Their Right Mind Would Eat This?
Reborn in the 1980s Becoming the Group's Darling Little Lucky Treasure
Yu Hai watched the old man’s serious expression and couldn’t help but feel his own teeth ache in sympathy.
After a long moment, the old man finally nodded in satisfaction. “It’s sour enough! How much are you selling these sour jujubes for?”
“You want to buy them?”
Yu Hai stared at the old man in surprise, half-wondering if he was joking. Or maybe, he thought, the old man’s taste buds had dulled with age and he couldn’t tell just how sour these jujubes really were.
Seeing Yu Hai’s reaction, the old man chuckled. “You’re quite an interesting fellow. You’ve got these sour jujubes out on display—aren’t they for sale?”
“Of course they are! It’s just that…” Yu Hai hesitated, then said, “Why don’t you try another one? They really are extremely sour!”
The old man laughed. “If they weren’t sour, I wouldn’t want them!”
“Huh?”
Still smiling, the old man turned and pointed across the street. “See those buildings over there? That’s my pharmacy.”
Yu Hai blinked, a little uncertain. “You mean… these sour jujubes are medicine?”
“They can be used as medicine.”
Suddenly, Yu Hai understood. No wonder! So they could be used medicinally! That explained it—who in their right mind would eat these otherwise?
“How much are you selling these jujubes for? Is this all you have, or do you have more at home?” the old man asked again.
This time, Yu Hai didn’t hesitate. He nodded eagerly. “Yes, yes, I have plenty more at home! Do you need a lot? If you want, you can come to my house and take a look.”
“Sure!”
The two quickly struck a deal. Yu Hai hurriedly slung his basket onto his back. “Let’s go, then. My house is in Sanliqiao, not far—just half an hour’s walk.”
But the old man didn’t follow him right away. “Even if I go with you, I can’t carry everything back myself. You come with me—I have a car. We’ll drive to your house. Is that alright?”
Yu Hai had never ridden in a car before in his life. At the suggestion, he nodded so hard it was like pounding garlic. “No problem, no problem!”
He followed the old man across the street. From a distance, he hadn’t noticed, but up close, Yu Hai saw that the pharmacy took up three storefronts.
The old man told Yu Hai to wait outside for a moment while he went into the pharmacy.
Yu Hai didn’t have to wait long before a van slowly pulled up.
The van stopped beside him, and the window rolled down to reveal the old man’s face.
“Come on, get in!”
Yu Hai answered and climbed into the van.
Although he’d never ridden in a car before, Yu Hai had been to the county town plenty of times and had seen plenty of cars. What man doesn’t love cars? He’d watched others get in and out of cars so many times that he’d practiced it in his mind countless times.
Once Yu Hai was seated, the old man nodded to the young driver. “Let’s go!”
Sanliqiao was right on the edge of the county town. Everyone in town knew where it was, so Yu Hai didn’t even need to give directions.
What would have been a half-hour walk took just over ten minutes by van.
Yu Hai kept a straight face, but inside he was marveling. Having a car was amazing!
As soon as the van entered the village, it drew a crowd of onlookers.
In all of Sanliqiao, there were hardly any vans—there weren’t even many bicycles or tricycles.
So when a van suddenly appeared, it instantly caused a sensation.
When the van finally stopped at the Yu family’s door and Yu Hai got out, the villagers who had come over to see what was happening were all stunned.
“Yu Hai actually rode in a car!”
“Has Yu Hai struck it rich?”"
