Chapter 20: “Hey, You Forgot Your Mother-in-Law!”
Reborn in the Eighties: Remarrying a Soldier
But Mrs. Fu was already on guard.
Seeing Yan Hongwei charging at her, she simply kicked out with her foot.
Yan Hongwei was knocked to the ground and lay there for a long time, unable to get up, wailing loudly, “Xu Zifeng is trying to kill me—!”
Mrs. Fu’s head was buzzing from the shrill noise. She glared over with a menacing look.
“Yan Hongwei, if you dare screech like a banshee at my door again, I’ll chop you up. I don’t care if I live or die, but if I take you with me before I go, that’s a win in my book.”
Yan Hongwei was completely terrified by that look.
No one knew where she found the strength, but she scrambled up from the ground, and suddenly, all her aches and pains seemed to vanish—she turned and ran for her life.
Mrs. Fu watched her fleeing figure, lips twitching, then shouted after her, “Yan Hongwei, you forgot to take your precious mother-in-law with you!”
Old Lady Fu’s face turned even darker.
The others around burst into laughter.
Someone even heckled, calling after the fleeing woman, “Yan Hongwei, you left your dear mother-in-law behind! Come back and get her!”
Old Lady Fu’s face flushed red with anger.
She was trembling, looking like she might explode any second.
Mrs. Fu wasn’t about to be polite to her now; she glared right back.
“What, you’re still here? Want me to see you out?”
“If you don’t leave, I’ll go inside and get a knife—”
Old Lady Fu panicked—what did she need a knife for?
Was she planning to chop up the Fu family?
At that thought, she couldn’t stay a second longer and ran off—
This time, she ran surprisingly fast.
Her body suddenly seemed just fine, her legs not hurting at all.
Mrs. Fu let out a cold snort, spat on the ground, and finally turned to go back inside and close the gate.
She looked up and met her daughter’s eyes, filled with admiration.
“Mom, you’re amazing,” Fu Mingxue gave her a big thumbs-up.
How had she never realized before that her mom was this awesome?
Mrs. Fu shot her a look. “Go wash your hands, it’s time to eat.”
“Okay, got it!”
Fu Mingxue happily headed to the kitchen to bring out the dishes.
But Mrs. Fu shooed her away. “Out of the way, the bowl’s hot. You go scoop the rice and get the chopsticks.”
So much had happened today, one thing after another—she hadn’t even had time to properly savor the joy of her daughter getting into college.
She hadn’t had a chance to tell her late husband about their daughter’s success, either.
All these years, she hadn’t remarried, just focused on raising her girl right!
To Mrs. Fu, it felt like just yesterday that the two of them sat down to eat together.
But for Fu Mingxue, it felt like a lifetime ago.
As she ate the familiar dishes she’d longed for in her memories, tears started streaming down her face.
Seeing her daughter crying while eating startled Mrs. Fu.
“—What are you crying for?”
Fu Mingxue couldn’t stop her tears.
She silently thanked the heavens for giving her a second chance.
This time, not only could she set things right in her own life, most importantly—she could make up for her regrets and be a good daughter to her mom.
When Mrs. Fu saw her crying even harder, she started to panic.
“What’s wrong? If someone’s bullying you, just tell me—I’ll go beat them up—”
Fu Mingxue looked at her vibrant, living mother and, not wanting her to worry, forced a smile through her tears. “Mom, I’m just sad that I’ll have to leave you soon.”
Mrs. Fu breathed a sigh of relief at that.
“Oh, is that all? What’s there to be sad about? You’re going off to college, and I’ll be here at home. You can come back whenever you’re on break.”
Fu Mingxue asked tentatively, “Mom, how about… you come with me to Beijing?”
