Chapter 4: Turning the Tables

Reborn in the Eighties: Remarrying a Soldier

Fu Mingxue heard footsteps coming up quickly behind her, making her even more anxious. Her shouts grew louder: “Bai Siqi is trying to steal my college acceptance letter!”

Luckily, she managed to run into the alley, where neighbors lived on both sides.

And she spotted her mother.

“Mom, help me! Bai Siqi is trying to steal my college acceptance letter—”

The moment Mrs. Fu heard this, she was furious. She grabbed a broom and rushed over. “Where’s that little brat Bai?”

Just as Song Yan was about to catch up, Fu Mingxue darted behind her mother.

“Mom, Song Yan is helping Bai Siqi steal my college acceptance letter!”

Mrs. Fu stopped in her tracks, her face full of anger as she glared at Song Yan. “Song Yan, what’s the meaning of this?”

A flash of anger crossed Song Yan’s eyes.

He took a deep breath, forcing down his rage. “Auntie, you’ve misunderstood. I didn’t do that. Mingxue fell into the water just now, and I went to save her—”

Mrs. Fu’s eyes widened. She noticed Song Yan was soaking wet, then looked at her own daughter—she was drenched too.

“Mingxue, you fell in the water?”

“Mom, I did, but he didn’t save me. He’s just trying to fool you! He and Bai Siqi are plotting to steal my college acceptance letter.”

Fu Mingxue waved the letter in her hand.

She shot Song Yan a look of disdain. “Song Yan, you call yourself a soldier! How could you stoop so low? I won’t hold the falling-in-the-water thing against you, since I know how to swim. Otherwise, your little scheme might have actually worked.”

Mrs. Fu was shocked. “Mingxue, when did you learn to swim?”

Fu Mingxue: …?

Oh, Mom, is this really the time to focus on that?

Can you please pay attention to what’s important?

“Mom, help me call the police. I’m freezing—I need to go home and change. And don’t forget, someone pushed me into the water, and then Bai Siqi pretended to be me and intercepted my acceptance letter from the mailman. You have to tell the police everything.”

With that, Fu Mingxue dashed home.

She couldn’t help it—it was just too cold.

She’d been given a second chance at life, and she was determined to take care of her body this time. She couldn’t let herself get sick again.

Song Yan’s expression was ugly.

“Auntie, Mingxue really misunderstood. She fell in the water, and I tried to save her. There were lots of people around who saw it. As for Siqi, she was just helping Mingxue get her letter—she wasn’t trying to steal it. Siqi took the college entrance exam herself. Even if she didn’t get in this year, she can try again next year.”

“I don’t know why Mingxue is targeting Siqi, but the truth isn’t what she says! If you insist on calling the police, then go ahead!”

With that, Song Yan stepped aside.

Mrs. Fu’s face was still grim. “My Mingxue has always been a good girl. She wouldn’t make things up! And besides, what reason would she have to target Bai Siqi?”

“Bai Siqi knows perfectly well that my Mingxue doesn’t associate with her, so why did she intercept Mingxue’s acceptance letter from the mailman?”

“Auntie, Siqi was just trying to help—”

“Heh, do we need her help? Song Yan, she’s your ex-wife. I don’t care what goes on between you two, but don’t drag my Mingxue into it. Even if Mingxue lets this go, I won’t!”

Mrs. Fu didn’t bother to see how Song Yan reacted. She turned and headed home.

Her daughter was alone in the house, and she was worried Song Yan might barge in if she left.

Song Yan was left standing there, looking grim.

After a few seconds, he turned and walked away.

At the corner of the alley, Bai Siqi, looking anxious, saw Song Yan and hurried over. “Song Yan, how did it go?”"
