Chapter 128: After You Sell the Goods, Walk Back Yourself

Scavenging in the Wasteland

Guai Guai wasn’t too keen on building walls himself, or doing any hard labor.

The Shi family gave up the spot they’d originally occupied under half of the bridge pier for him.

So, he started piling up his parts under the bridge pier, forming a natural barrier.

Behind the Shi family’s wall were three vegetable plots.

Each one was about the size of a parking space.

Of course, the size of the plots didn’t matter—the yield was what really counted.

Shi Yuebai looked over the layout and pointed to the end closest to the Pang family.

“We’ll fix up this plot and plant baby cabbage.”

There was only a small packet of baby cabbage seeds, maybe twenty seeds in total.

Ah Hong said she’d found a plastic bag in the underground mall, and the baby cabbage seeds had fallen out of it.

Before the wasteland era, unless you went to a specialized area in a big city,

you’d never find crop seeds in places like malls or shopping streets.

It’s not that no one had thought about growing crops in the wasteland.

But radiation was a huge problem, and it was everywhere.

Either nothing would grow, or what did grow would be mutated.

If you could eat the irradiated crops, that was already a blessing.

But what if you ate something, and it mutated inside you—like an octopus bursting out of a survivor’s stomach?

Over time, ordinary scavengers in the wasteland just gave up on the idea.

But for Shi Yuebai, these seeds didn’t mutate at all.

Genetic mutations only happened when radiation reached a certain level.

Food with 100% radiation was actually relatively stable.

If a radiation detector showed food with over 100% radiation, then it was inedible—

there was a chance of mutation.

Shi Yuebai’s spiritual energy blanketed the entire Tongzi Frame, already providing a certain degree of protection against radiation.

What’s more, she’d recently drawn a massive purification array inside the Tongzi Frame.

A spirit-gathering array alone wasn’t enough—it wasn’t designed to block radiation.

There would still be some residual radiation affecting the people and crops inside.

The purification array was there to deal with that.

With Shi Yuebai’s approval, Ah Hong immediately called Nong Yasi over.

The land was already prepared.

After clearing away the trash, all they had to do was turn the soil and plant the seeds.

The baby cabbage plot was also just the size of a parking space, lined up with the other three plots.

While Ah Hong and Nong Yasi were planting, the other three plots quietly sprouted new greens.

The scallions had already been harvested once yesterday,

and now it looked like they could be picked again.

The green vines in the potato patch were growing even more lush.

No one had dug up the potatoes yet, so who knew how big they’d gotten underground.

The mushrooms were the most prolific—one blink and a whole patch had sprung up.

Now, there was baby cabbage too.

Shi Yuebai pinched her thick fingers to her brow.

“Take those expired foods and sell them.”

If these crops kept growing and getting harvested,

not only would the Shi family run out of space, even the drainage ditch would be full.

In that case, the first things to be abandoned would be the expired foods.

Shi Yuebai said with distaste,

“Sell them for whatever points you can get. See if we can trade the points for anything useful.”

Nong Yasi paused and glanced at the other three vegetable plots.

She nodded.

Compared to the crops growing in the Shi family’s plots, those canned goods, expired biscuits, and expired milk were basically trash.

Shi Yuebai called over Captain Qiao and explained the situation.

Captain Qiao frowned in thought.

“In the past, our team would use stored food to trade for water in the big city.

This time, trading for points is fine too.”

“But I heard that next door, Xiao Lingye’s food stash got stolen by an insider, and now he’s hunting the traitor down.”

After saying this, Captain Qiao glanced at Shi Yuebai.

He meant that if they took food from the drainage ditch to trade for points right now,

it would easily attract attention from people with ulterior motives.

If we’re not short on food, we should just eat quietly and keep a low profile.

If word got out, it could bring big trouble.

Shi Yuebai thought for a moment. “What’s the big city offering mercenaries?”

She’d been to the front lines.

Yi Zhe and the others were risking their lives to defend the big city.

The incentives must be pretty generous.

Captain Qiao said, “Each person gets 20,000 points a month, plus 15 liters of water.”

He frowned again. “But the city management doesn’t cover food, equipment, or medical supplies for mercenaries.”

Twenty thousand points a month sounded like a lot for a mercenary.

But aside from water, the city didn’t provide anything else.

Shi Yuebai didn’t know the prices in the city, but she figured they couldn’t be cheap.

“Alright, go to the front line and find Yi Zhe. Talk to him—let’s sell this stuff cheap.”

Shi Yuebai made the decision. There was just too much food in the drainage ditch.

Captain Qiao grinned, finally relieved.

He’d wanted Shi Yuebai to get rid of those expired foods for a long time.

Now his wish had come true.

But Shi Yuebai’s next words left Captain Qiao petrified.

“Move all my scallions into the drainage ditch, put them in the space that’s been cleared out.”

What? Captain Qiao wobbled.

Now the Qiao family would be even more afraid to step foot in there.

The expired junk food had packaging—

if there was nowhere else to step, you could at least walk on the wrappers.

But now, with scallions moved in, how could they step on those?

Wouldn’t you feel guilty stomping on them?

Shi Yuebai raised her staff. She didn’t care about or understand Captain Qiao’s inner turmoil.

She poked him with her staff to snap him out of it.

“I’ll teleport you over. After you sell the goods, walk back yourself.”

Mercenaries’ points were credited to their city-issued cards.

They could transfer points via communicator.

So as long as Captain Qiao sold the goods to Yi Zhe, Yi Zhe could transfer the points to Shi Yuebai.

That way, there was no need to worry about Captain Qiao getting robbed.

Captain Qiao quickly climbed down into the drainage ditch and packed up a huge bundle:

- Koko candy x100

- Oreo cookies x50

- Spicy strips x70

- Green tea x24

He hefted the massive bundle and stood nervously in front of Shi Yuebai.

Captain Qiao knew one thing: Shi Yuebai could suddenly disappear to a certain place,

and reappear just as suddenly.

He’d witnessed it once himself—though what he saw was Shi Yuebai teleporting a corpse inside the Shi family’s wall.

He hadn’t told anyone about it.

Now that Shi Yuebai was about to teleport him, it was hard not to be nervous.

Would any of his parts fall off during teleportation?

While Captain Qiao was lost in thought, the world spun around him.

He nearly lost his balance.

When he steadied himself, he was already at the defense line.

Right in front of him, Huo Chenggui had taken off his pants and was squatting, taking a dump.

He looked up in shock at Captain Qiao, who was carrying a massive bundle.

(Today is so cold. Lots of kids in Xiaomie’s class have caught colds and fevers.

Everyone, take care of yourselves.)"
