Chapter 156: Poof—Your Sister’s Gone

Scavenging in the Wasteland

Shi Yuebai never made it to the swimming pool.

She only managed to walk as far as the vegetable patch before her legs gave out. She plopped down right there and promptly passed out.

She was truly exhausted. Living in the wasteland, constrained by her own limitations, Shi Yuebai had never felt so worn out.

Back in the Wu Tribe, life had been so much easier. As long as she had enough spiritual energy, her fighting power was limitless.

Maybe it would be better to just die. If she died, maybe she’d return to the Wu Tribe.

Lying in the vegetable patch, Shi Yuebai’s breathing grew ragged.

She frowned uneasily as her mind slipped into the subconscious.

In other words, she started dreaming.

In her dream, Shi Yuebai seemed to return to her previous life in the Wu Tribe.

There was nothing there, really.

Just endless yellow sand and barren wasteland—a place where not a single blade of grass grew, and spiritual energy was forever depleted.

Shi Yuebai had no parents, no family, but she did have a group of followers.

In the Wu Tribe, where time was meaningless, she led her people every day, fighting for spiritual energy—or being fought for it.

They used the soul power gained from cultivating spiritual energy to strengthen themselves, then went out to snatch more spiritual energy.

Or to be robbed again.

Shi Yuebai had never thought that this way of life would ever change.

She actually rather enjoyed it.

If you didn’t live like this, how else could you survive in the Wu Tribe?

The only joy in living was fighting, again and again.

Battles that seemed impossible to win, but she’d always manage to win against the odds.

That was the fun for every member of the Wu Tribe.

If there was anything that set Shi Yuebai apart from the others, it was that ever since she could remember, she had never lost a single fight for spiritual energy.

Her soul power grew stronger and stronger through these battles.

Her followers increased, her territory expanded.

Shi Yuebai was, without a doubt, the great witch of the Wu Tribe.

If she hadn’t been stabbed in the back, she might very well have won the chaotic battle for the chieftain’s position.

If she became the chieftain, she’d have even more territory, more followers.

She could compete with all the tribes for even more spiritual energy.

She raised her hand, lying on the ground, clutching her chest, and suddenly opened her eyes wide.

A blood-red moon hung high in the sky, and a voice said,

“The Wu Tribe and the wasteland are the same.”

Shi Yuebai frowned tightly. Actually, there was a little bit of a difference.

But what exactly was different, she couldn’t quite put her finger on it in the dream.

“Do you want to come back?” The blood moon turned into a swirling vortex.

Shi Yuebai got up from the ground, her body once again slim and agile.

No more heavy fat, no more weak, powerless limbs.

She felt like she could shatter mountains with a single punch again.

Shi Yuebai’s heart leapt with joy. She lifted her foot and walked toward the vortex.

Why shouldn’t she go back to the Wu Tribe?

She wanted to slice up every single person who stabbed her in the back.

Then chop them to pieces!!!

But then, crying sounded behind her.

She stopped, frowning and looking back.

The crying sounded familiar.

It was her mother from the wasteland.

“Aren’t you coming back?” The blood moon urged, “Come back and keep fighting!”

“I don’t want to fight anymore.”

Shi Yuebai turned her back to the blood moon. “My mom’s waiting for me to come home for dinner.”

She turned and ran toward the direction of her mother’s cries.

Behind her, the blood moon howled, “Shi Yuebai, you coward! You spineless wretch!”

Shi Family’s vegetable patch.

Shi Yuebai opened her eyes, a flash of dark red flickering in them.

She was surrounded by a circle of people.

“What are you staring at? I’m not dead yet.”

Shi Yuebai snapped, lying at the edge of the vegetable patch, looking at her mother and Huo Chenggui, whose eyes were swollen from crying.

The kids, including Shi Yaoyao, were nowhere to be seen—they’d all been moved outside the second wall for the night.

Only adults were gathered around Shi Yuebai.

Including the mercenary, Chen Yong.

But not Yi Zhe.

That’s the downside of puppet dolls.

They have no thoughts of their own, only acting on Shi Yuebai’s will.

If she told it to block someone, it would block them.

So everyone else got in, but Yi Zhe was left outside.

“Baby, wuwuwu, baby, does it hurt?”

Shi Yuebai’s mother clung to her, sobbing uncontrollably.

She hugged Shi Yuebai’s head tightly, as if afraid that if she let go, her child would leave her forever.

Honestly, Shi Yuebai felt fine.

After all the chaos of the day, her headache had actually eased a bit.

As long as her body grew stronger, the mental damage would heal in time.

Shi Yuebai decided to rest a while before moving again.

Her mother was crying her heart out, and Shi Yuebai tried to pry her arms from around her neck.

But her mother just twisted away, so Shi Yuebai looked to Huo Chenggui for help.

She shot him a look, urging him to do something.

If her mother kept crying like this, Shi Yuebai was going to beat Huo Chenggui up.

Huo Chenggui sighed, wanting to say something.

Shi Yuebai glared at him.

In the end, he could only step forward and, half coaxing, half tricking, managed to rescue Shi Yuebai from her mother’s embrace.

Shi Yuebai looked at the others, all staring at her with worried faces.

Things were different now. Back when Shi Yuebai hauled her 750-pound body up the garbage mountain, no one but Shi Yaoyao ever saw her.

But now, with so many eyes on her, and none of them afraid of her scolding...

She couldn’t stay here any longer.

They say a doting mother spoils her child—Shi Yuebai never understood that before.

Now she did.

If she wanted to push herself, she couldn’t do it in front of these people.

Otherwise, their tears would drown her.

“All right, get back to work. Don’t just stand around here.”

“Have you finished today’s work?”

Shi Yuebai’s face darkened as she shouted at the crowd,

“If you’ve got time to stare at me, why aren’t you out scavenging or building the wall? Are you looking for trouble?”

At the mention of work, everyone’s scalp tingled.

The fear of being bossed around by Shi Yuebai washed over them.

“Go, go, go, we’re going now.”

“Yuebai, you rest up. I’ll get a team together to go scavenging.”

“I’ll head to the city right now to sell points.”

Everyone scattered like birds and beasts.

Whenever Shi Yuebai yelled at them, they all relaxed.

Shi Yuebai looked at Huo Chenggui and her mother again.

Her mother’s tears had finally been soothed by Huo Chenggui.

Shi Yuebai said, “Take good care of my mom. I’m going for a walk.”

As soon as she finished speaking, Huo Chenggui looked up—only to find Shi Yuebai was gone.

“Where did she go?”

Huo Chenggui jumped in surprise and turned to Chen Yong.

Chen Yong’s face was pale. His hand trembled as he pointed in the direction Shi Yuebai had vanished.

“Poof—your sister just disappeared.”

Really, he’d seen it with his own eyes.

He knew Shi Yuebai had some skills, but Chen Yong had never imagined that someone as big as Shi Yuebai could just vanish into thin air.

It was... it was just magical.
