Chapter 157: She’s Just Like Me—I Don’t Have a Father Either
Scavenging in the Wasteland
Shi Yuebai teleported herself into the house located in the big city.
It was still morning. Ying Ruoying had already cleaned the basement, first floor, and second floor until they were spotless.
But without water, the bloodstains on the floor, walls, and sofa couldn’t be wiped clean.
It was clear that Ying Ruoying had done her best.
Shi Yuebai didn’t intend to stay here long-term; she just needed a place to walk around and exercise her body from time to time.
So she didn’t bother greeting Ying Ruoying, simply supporting herself against the wall on the first floor and slowly making her way forward.
Ying Ruoying was at the gate, trading food and supplies with the old man and his grandson outside.
Last time, Ying Ruoying had traded for some LED light strips, and Shi Yuebai hadn’t said anything about it.
This time, the grandfather and grandson brought over dozens of rolls of light strips, each roll over a hundred meters long.
Ying Ruoying accepted all of them without hesitation.
Of course, she also took quite a few solar panels.
She calculated everything precisely.
The food she traded was just enough to feed the grandfather and grandson for two or three days.
They came frequently—at first once a day, then twice a day.
Unknowingly, they had used solar panels and light strips to trade for a whole large plastic bag of ready-to-eat food from Ying Ruoying.
“Besides solar panels and light strips, do you have anything else?” Ying Ruoying frowned at the pair.
She was worried that trading for too much of just these two kinds of supplies would get her criticized by Shi Yuebai for not doing a good job.
Although the boss had told her to collect supplies, she hadn’t specified what kind.
But if it was always just one or two types, it made Ying Ruoying look incompetent.
The old man immediately asked cautiously,
“We also have lamps. Do you want those?”
He and his grandson were both worried that if they kept bringing what amounted to junk, Ying Ruoying would stop trading food with them altogether.
Ying Ruoying hesitated, then nodded.
Watching the grandfather and grandson leave, thanking her profusely, Ying Ruoying dragged the two heavy backpacks back into the house, inch by inch.
Shi Yuebai was leaning against the wall, having made her way to the door of the communal bathroom.
She stared at the bathtub, which was still covered in dried blood, lost in thought.
“Boss, I really can’t get this clean,” Ying Ruoying mumbled nervously from behind, afraid Shi Yuebai would be angry.
Shi Yuebai shifted her large frame aside, revealing a bucket in front of her.
The bucket was filled with clean water.
“After you bring the supplies to the basement, clean the bathtub thoroughly.”
One bucket of water wasn’t much.
So Shi Yuebai planned to have Ying Ruoying scrub the blood out of the tub, then fill it up with water.
After saying this, she continued moving slowly along the wall of the first floor.
Right now, Shi Yuebai could only move at a turtle’s pace.
Every hour she walked, she’d have to sit down and rest.
Otherwise, her bones wouldn’t be able to take it.
After moving about two meters along the wall, Shi Yuebai noticed there was no sound behind her.
She turned to look at Ying Ruoying.
Ying Ruoying was standing there, frozen in front of the bucket of clean water, not moving at all.
“Get to work! What are you standing there for?” Shi Yuebai said, her expression darkening.
“If you don’t do it, do you expect me to?”
Yeah, right. Shi Yuebai wasn’t about to do it herself.
Only then did Ying Ruoying snap out of it, flustered and not sure whether she should fetch a rag first or bring the supplies to the basement.
After finally hauling the supplies down to the basement, she hurried back up and peeked into the bathroom.
The bucket of water was still there.
Ying Ruoying let out a sigh of relief.
She relaxed, picked up a palm-sized rag, and tentatively dipped it into the clean water.
Honestly, was this bucket of water really for her to clean the tub?
Could she take a sip?
Or at least drink the leftover water after cleaning the tub?
Ying Ruoying didn’t dare ask.
Shi Yuebai didn’t bother explaining.
She continued along the wall for another three or four meters.
Every step was a struggle for Shi Yuebai.
But her body was starting to regain some strength.
Earlier, all the tendons and meridians in her body had been shattered, and the pain had tormented her endlessly.
But fortunately, after her slow, careful recovery, the channels in her arms and legs had reformed.
She had regained feeling in her limbs and head.
As long as she didn’t remove the strength-sealing spell or use any of her internal energy,
every step she took sent waves of pain through her legs and up to her brain.
But this pain actually dulled the mental agony she felt.
Now, even her waist was starting to ache noticeably.
The channels in her torso were forming, and exercise sped up the process.
Shi Yuebai felt that as long as she kept this up, her meridians would soon be fully healed.
The sound of scrubbing came from the bathroom.
Shi Yuebai, moving like a snail, made her way to the bathroom door for the second time.
She instructed Ying Ruoying,
“Don’t drink the water you used to clean the tub. Pour it all out—it’s not clean.”
It wasn’t like she hadn’t given Ying Ruoying water.
Ying Ruoying drank a bottle a day; that whole big plastic bag of clean water would last her twenty or thirty days.
Ying Ruoying scrubbed the tub diligently and answered in agreement.
When she looked up, she found that even though she’d already used a quarter of the bucket, somehow it was full again.
Ying Ruoying blinked. Really, living with the boss, even water was never a problem.
She scrubbed the tub with extra effort.
She imagined the tub was Xiao Lingye, wishing she could scrape off a whole layer.
The third time Shi Yuebai made her way to the bathroom door, she asked the hard-working Ying Ruoying inside,
“Aren’t you curious how your daughter is doing now?”
Ying Ruoying, crouched in the tub, froze.
She lowered her head and said nothing.
Shi Yuebai asked, “Do you want to see her?”
Ying Ruoying suddenly looked up. “I don’t want to see her.”
Her feelings toward the child were complicated.
Because she didn’t even know who the child’s father was.
In some ways, Ying Ruoying hoped Shi Fuze would be okay.
But she couldn’t help resenting the child.
Shi Yuebai was silent for a moment, then said,
“Her surname is Shi, same as mine. From now on, she’s part of my family.”
“She’s just like me—I don’t have a father either.”
“Think about it. If you want to see her, I can arrange it.”
“But if you try to hurt her, I’ll kill you first!”
For all her selfishness, Shi Yuebai was fiercely protective of her own.
At that moment, in the Tongzi Frame, Guai Guai had just finished working and was about to retreat into his turtle shell to tinker with the wheelchair Shi Yuebai had broken.
He paused, noticing that two large backpacks had appeared in the center of the Tongzi Frame.
Based on past experience, Guai Guai curiously went over to check.
More light strips, and so many of them.
Would it ever end?
He was a master mechanic, not a landscape designer! Was this easy for him?
Well? Does it look good? Does it look good? Does it look good?"
