Chapter 132: Just You Wait
Wild and Dashing in the 80s
Monday at work was the same as always: meetings, pitching story ideas, and getting assigned tasks.
But Su Qinghu could clearly sense something was different. That feeling finally reached its peak on Tuesday, so she went straight to the director and voiced her concerns.
The director looked at her, was silent for a moment, and instead of answering her question, asked, “What do you think of our department?”
Su Qinghu narrowed her eyes and gave a clear answer. “I think our department is great. If I could, I’d stay here forever.”
Her blunt and definite response left the director no room for beating around the bush. Considering her background, there was no need for subtlety anyway, so he said, “The head of the Operations Department suggested today that you be transferred there. He listed out, point by point, all the reasons you’d be a good fit…”
Su Qinghu: “…”
Is the head of Operations out of his mind?!
“I’m not going,” Su Qinghu frowned. “I refuse to transfer.”
What kind of logic is that? Just because he suggests it, I have to agree?
“Director, aren’t you even going to try to keep such an outstanding talent like me?” Su Qinghu looked at him reproachfully. “Since I was assigned here, I’ve never made a single mistake.”
The director, who was more or less on her side, actually felt a bit more at ease at her half-joking, half-boastful complaint.
“Who brags about themselves like that?” The director laughed. “You’re even getting emotional? Think about it—who do you think you have to thank for still being able to sit in this office?”
“Well, I’m just stating the facts.” Su Qinghu laughed too. “I don’t care about anyone else, but you’re my direct boss. If I have questions or problems, of course I’ll come to you. Bottom line, you have to help me solve this.”
“You really don’t want to transfer?” the director asked again.
“Really, I don’t!” Su Qinghu replied. “Think about it—if I really wanted to transfer, with my smarts, I’d have been working toward that goal a long time ago.”
The head of Operations was clearly trying to win her over, to get her on his side, so that if anything happened, they’d sink or swim together.
Seriously, what a pipe dream!
“All right, I’ll try my best to block this for you,” the director said with a smile. “But you should know, you’re already on the president’s radar. He’s always believed in putting the right person in the right job, and right now, in his mind, the job you’re most suited for is over in Operations.”
Su Qinghu raised an eyebrow. “So you mean, if I refuse, he might call me in for a talk?”
“I’m just saying it’s possible.” Seeing her face fall, the director tried to reassure her, “Don’t get too worked up. I said I’d try to block it, and I will. But there are some things I can’t say openly—you’ll have to figure those out yourself.”
His words were vague, but Su Qinghu understood: he meant the gossip about her behind the scenes was out of his hands, and she’d have to deal with it herself or just ignore it.
Su Qinghu nodded. “Got it.”
The gossip was nothing more than people saying she’d taken a shortcut, cozied up to the head of Operations, and was now angling for a cushy job. How hard could that be to handle? She could squash that in no time!
Heh! Just you wait!
Back at her desk, Su Qinghu wrote her article, turned it in, and then slacked off until it was almost time to leave. She packed up and headed out.
This time, she didn’t go straight home. She made a detour to confirm that Zhao Liangyan didn’t have what she wanted, then went home.
When she got to her door, both kids had already finished their homework. Erdan was sitting right outside, waiting for her.
“Why are you sitting out here?” Su Qinghu asked, bag in hand, glancing at the base of the wall. “Where did those watermelons come from?”
A few green-skinned watermelons, fresh and dewy, with stems and even a bit of vine still attached—obviously picked that day.
Erdan glanced at the watermelons, a mischievous look on his face. “They’re from that guy who wants my brother to call him Dad!”
“Oh, so they’re for your brother,” Su Qinghu nodded. “Well, that’s up to him.”
“My brother didn’t want them and told him to get lost,” Erdan grinned. “So the guy said they were for you.”
Su Qinghu: “…”
She turned and glanced at Erdan, who was grinning wickedly at the watermelons, and raised an eyebrow. “I don’t want them either.”
Erdan immediately stood up. “Then can I have them?”
Ha! As expected, this kid was waiting for this. “You think you can?”
Not only does that guy want to be his brother’s dad, he’s also trying to chase after her and muscle in on Chen Lie’s territory. She was curious to see what choice this little rascal would make.
“I think I can,” Erdan replied seriously.
Su Qinghu: …Damn, I let my guard down and forgot about my bargain-bin son’s true nature!
“Look, my brother didn’t want the watermelons. When the guy said they were for you, both my brother and I refused. But he insisted, said if you don’t want them, you can throw them wherever you like.”
Erdan grinned at Su Qinghu. “Mom, can we make a deal? You throw the watermelons at the entrance of our alley, so everyone sees you really tossed them out, then I’ll go pick them up.”
Su Qinghu: “…”
Yep, this kid’s love of money never changes!
“When I pick them up, they’ll be mine,” Erdan said, eyes shining. “Nothing to do with you or my brother, so you don’t have to worry about him causing you trouble.”
Plus, he could sell them!
He’d use half the money to help support the family, and save the rest. Then, when his mom wanted to start a business, he could invest a big chunk and be her partner!
Money makes money, and when he grows up, he’ll be able to bask in the sun on a pile of cash~~~
The more Erdan thought about it, the happier he got, his eyes full of silly daydreams.
Dadan: “You idiot!”
We’re family—just because you say it’s got nothing to do with us, doesn’t make it so!
Su Qinghu studied Erdan, amazed. She was curious how this kid’s logic worked, and just how thick-skinned he could get.
Forget logic for now—just the thickness of his skin was already a match for hers!
So young, and already so shameless. If he keeps this up, who knows how thick-skinned he’ll be when he grows up…
“We’re family. Just because you say it’s got nothing to do with me or your brother, does that make it true?” Su Qinghu asked, not to scold him, but to see how his mind worked, to see what he’d say next.
When it comes to educating kids, or subtly correcting their thinking, you have to understand how they think first, so you can fight poison with poison~~~
Erdan looked Su Qinghu in the eye, adopting the tone of a teacher patiently guiding a student. “Just use your little brain and think about it~~~”"
