Chapter 133: What Nonsense About Romance
Wild and Dashing in the 80s
Think about it?
You guess whether I want to or not!
Su Qinghu narrowed her eyes dangerously. “My dear son, I don’t feel like using my little brain right now~~~”
What the hell is she saying? Who’s got a little brain?
He’s the one with the little brain!
Da Dan eyed Su Qinghu’s fidgeting hand and quietly took a step back. Go ahead, hit him, hit him hard—let’s see if he dares act up again, touching everything like he owns the place!
Hmm? Out of the corner of her eye, Su Qinghu caught Da Dan’s movement. She glanced at him, pressed down her restless hand, and then forced a gentle, motherly smile at Er Dan. “My dear son, hurry up and use your little brain to help Mom solve this puzzle. Otherwise, your little brain and my palm are going to have a private meeting~~~”
Er Dan’s eyes bulged as he suddenly remembered that the easygoing Su Qinghu from a moment ago was still his elder.
He quickly put on a flattering smile. “Hehe, I’ll tell you, I’ll tell you right now.”
Su Qinghu put away her dangerous look, glanced at him sideways, and, like an empress, spat out a single word: “Speak!”
Er Dan scratched his head, looked at Su Qinghu, then at his brother, hesitated for a while, and finally said, “Didn’t I tell you before? I like hanging out at the alley entrance and in the park, listening to the old folks tell stories. There’s this one old man who loves telling stories…”
Su Qinghu: “…And then?”
“Then he once said, ‘Fight fire with fire,’ and at the end he added, when dealing with shameless people, you have to be even more shameless than them.” Er Dan’s eyes sparkled. “I think the old man’s got a point.”
Su Qinghu: “…” She was speechless!
Seeing Su Qinghu silent and unable to tell if she was angry or not, Er Dan tentatively added, “That’s how I used to deal with Yao Yingying. Every time, she’d get so mad…”
Da Dan frowned at Er Dan, a little annoyed that he’d bring up “Yao Yingying” in front of Su Qinghu.
Su Qinghu thought for a moment, connected Yao Yingying with Chen Lie’s ex-wife, and gave a mysterious smile. “And then?”
If Yao Yingying didn’t hit him, she’d take his last name!
In the beginning, whenever she got mad, these two kids were always ready to bolt, so this “fight fire with fire” tactic definitely didn’t work on Yao Yingying—at best, it was just a war of words!
Er Dan knew what Su Qinghu wanted to ask, but could he really tell the truth? If he did, would those watermelons still be his?
So he tried to muddle through. “I handled her, didn’t I?”
Meaning, he’d already dealt with Yao Yingying, so what’s the point of talking about what happened next? There is no ‘next,’ and even if there was, he wasn’t about to say it.
Su Qinghu snorted with a laugh. “After she got mad, she probably resorted to physical force, right? Did your butt hurt?”
Er Dan pouted and muttered, “You shouldn’t hit people in the face, and you shouldn’t expose people’s shortcomings…”
After grumbling, he figured he should get back to the main point, so he argued with Su Qinghu, “Yao Yingying isn’t the same as that man.”
“How are they different?” Su Qinghu wasn’t in a hurry to go inside anymore and just stood at the gate talking to him. “Tell me.”
Er Dan stammered, “Yao Yingying dared to hit us because she was our mom at the time, and telling the neighborhood aunties and uncles wouldn’t help. But that guy isn’t anybody to us. If we told the neighborhood uncles and aunties, or even that police officer who took us to the prison for a tour, if he dared to hit us, he’d be in big trouble!”
“If he doesn’t dare hit us, then the old man’s ‘fight fire with fire’ trick will work just fine!”
“If it’s just a war of words, who’s afraid of who?”
By the end, Er Dan was practically bursting with bravado.
Su Qinghu looked at him thoughtfully, wanting to tell him that once things get mixed up with romance, they never go the way you expect.
At that point, it’s not just a war of words anymore.
It’s public opinion.
But explaining romance to a little kid right now didn’t seem appropriate… and was kind of difficult…
“Am I pretty?” Su Qinghu suddenly leaned in close to Er Dan, looking at him seriously. “How pretty am I?”
Er Dan was caught off guard by her sudden approach, held his breath, and, staring into her star-filled eyes, stammered, “P-pretty.”
Su Qinghu pressed, “Pretty to what extent?”
“To the point that… no one can compare?” Er Dan was starting to feel that something was off, and answered her more cautiously.
Su Qinghu fell silent.
What now?
Er Dan’s answer was pure flattery, and it made her feel a little giddy inside…
So, what was that sudden flash of inspiration she just had? What was she going to say to the kids?
Su Qinghu stood there, squinting, racking her brains for that perfect line she’d just thought of, but after a long while, she came up empty.
Staring at Er Dan, Su Qinghu let out a long sigh, waved her hand as she walked back inside, and said, “Whatever, do what you want with those watermelons.”
If she couldn’t think of the perfect line, what was the point of lecturing? She could already imagine that whatever she said would just get overturned by Er Dan’s twisted logic!
“Huh?” Er Dan watched her walk away, looking all innocent. “You’re not going to say anything else?”
Su Qinghu turned around, her eyes narrowing. “I’m warning you, don’t push your luck! I already said you can handle it yourself, so don’t keep pestering me!”
Innocent?
He’s a little devil, okay?
He’s even more adaptable than she is, even more sweet and salty when he wants to be…
It’s infuriating!
Su Qinghu flopped onto a chair in the living room, staring at the ceiling, pondering the great question of what to eat later.
At the door, after mulling over Su Qinghu’s words, Er Dan suddenly grinned and asked Da Dan, “Bro, does this mean Mom agreed to let me sell the watermelons?”
At this point, he still hadn’t noticed Da Dan’s dangerous mood.
“Bro?” Er Dan called again, then suddenly took two steps back and threatened, “Mom’s home right now. If you hit me, she’ll definitely think you’re the bad kid!”
Da Dan didn’t say a word, just took two steps toward him.
Er Dan retreated again. “Bro, we’re family!”
“You’d better stand still,” Da Dan threatened. “Or I’ll beat you up!”
Er Dan obediently stopped, but still kept talking. “Mom agreed to let me sell the watermelons, and I don’t think I did anything wrong. You have no reason to hit me!”
Da Dan scoffed. If he wanted to beat up his silly little brother, he could come up with a hundred reasons in a heartbeat.
“Watch what you say from now on,” Da Dan said in a low voice, glancing from the gate to the living room before quietly warning his silly brother, “Don’t mention Yao Yingying in front of her.”
Er Dan was confused, not understanding why his brother suddenly changed the subject, or why he was saying this.
“Huh? Why not?”
Er Dan thought back to Su Qinghu’s expression when he’d mentioned Yao Yingying earlier, but just looked even more puzzled. “There… there wasn’t a problem, was there?”
The new mom didn’t get mad, after all.
“I said don’t mention it, so don’t!” Da Dan glared at him."
