Chapter 139: The New Tenant
Natural Disasters and the End of the World, She Went Crazy After Stocking Up on Supplies
An Nan didn’t pay it much mind. Sooner or later, someone was bound to move into the first floor. As long as it didn’t affect her, she didn’t care who it was.
After washing up and getting dressed, she saw Fugui already waiting eagerly by the door, tongue lolling out, clearly looking forward to going out.
An Nan couldn’t help but laugh.
Ever since they started having meals with Gu Zhiyu, this little guy had been excited to go downstairs every day—no more laziness, no more sleeping in.
That’s the power of a handsome man.
She took the dog downstairs. Gu Zhiyu had already opened the door.
The two of them had agreed yesterday that from now on, they’d cook at his place. That way, she wouldn’t have to keep going downstairs for ingredients and then back upstairs to cook.
As soon as An Nan entered, she did her routine check on his arm. “How’s it feeling? Still can’t use it?”
Gu Zhiyu’s calm expression suddenly tightened. “It hurts.”
An Nan was puzzled. “But you seemed pretty agile during the fight yesterday.”
Gu Zhiyu was silent for a moment. “It got a bit better, but I overdid it during the fight and made it worse again.”
An Nan sighed. “You need to take care of it. Don’t let it leave any lasting problems.”
What a mess. Why did she have to twist his arm in the first place?
She tied on her apron. Today’s menu: spicy shredded potatoes and teriyaki beef rice.
Gu Zhiyu was in charge of making the teriyaki sauce, while An Nan handled the potatoes.
She peeled potatoes while sneaking glances, trying to learn his technique.
Gu Zhiyu smiled. “Come over here and watch properly.”
An Nan kept her face neutral, but inside she was delighted as she moved closer, carefully memorizing every ingredient and step.
Once the ingredients were prepped and the sauce was ready, they were just about to start cooking when there was a knock at the door.
The two exchanged a glance.
Who could be visiting in a place like this?
Fugui stood by the door, on high alert, even taking up a defensive stance.
Seeing this, An Nan immediately grabbed her trusty triangular dagger and slowly approached the door.
Dogs are sensitive to their environment—whoever was outside had made the dog feel threatened.
Gu Zhiyu stopped her, gesturing to the bulge at his waist, and went to check first.
An Nan knew that was his gun, so she didn’t argue and let him take the lead.
When the door opened, an unexpected face appeared.
Susu, the dancer, smiled brightly, like a flamboyant flower. “Brother Gu, we meet again!”
Gu Zhiyu frowned.
An Nan poked her head out from behind him when she heard the voice. “Susu?”
Why her?
No wonder Fugui was baring his teeth at the door.
Turns out it wasn’t someone dangerous, just someone he disliked. If An Nan hadn’t held him back yesterday, he’d have rushed up and bitten her.
Susu’s smile froze for a moment when she saw An Nan, but she quickly recovered, putting on a sweet voice, “Sister An, we meet again!”
Sister An?
An Nan felt goosebumps rise.
This woman was like a ripe red poppy—why pretend to be some innocent little flower?
Still, she nodded politely.
Susu’s smile remained dazzling. “There was a bug infestation at my old place, so I had to move here. Looks like we’ll be neighbors from now on! Please take care of me.”
So she was the new tenant on the first floor.
An Nan immediately became wary.
Judging from yesterday, this woman seemed to have a close relationship with the boss. Could it be they’d noticed something and sent her here to snoop around?
As she pondered, she replied perfunctorily, “Oh, hello.”
Susu glanced at her apron, her eyes turning. “Brother Gu, Sister An, are you cooking? Doesn’t the base deliver meals?”
An Nan replied, “Nothing else to do, just cooking for fun.”
Susu looked very interested. “Really? Can I join you? I’m quite the cook myself~”
An Nan turned to Gu Zhiyu. This was his home, so it was up to him.
Gu Zhiyu’s face didn’t change as he said his first words, “It’s not convenient.”
Susu was a bit embarrassed. “Alright, I’ll go downstairs and unpack, then. I won’t bother you.”
After closing the door, An Nan and Gu Zhiyu went back inside, while Susu cursed inwardly as she walked downstairs.
Insensitive jerk!
Yesterday he threw her to the ground, and today he shut her out.
She’d never been rejected by a man like this before!
And the boss—if he wanted to chase a woman, why drag her into it, making her come here to seduce this cold, unfeeling, stubborn man?
So annoying!
And that An Nan—she lives on the third floor, so why is she shamelessly hanging around on the second?
Could it be the two of them are already hooking up…?
A sense of crisis welled up in her.
If those two really got together and she failed the boss’s mission, she’d be in serious trouble.
Susu quickened her pace, returned to her room, and pulled out her suitcase.
She needed a plan—to catch Gu Youcai’s attention first.
She pulled out all her “man-killer” outfits and tried them on one by one.
This one’s no good—the neckline isn’t low enough.
This one’s out too—the skirt’s not short enough.
This one… too trashy.
While Susu was frantically trying on clothes downstairs, the two upstairs had already finished cooking.
Although An Nan did the actual cooking, the teriyaki sauce was Gu Zhiyu’s handiwork.
An Nan tasted the teriyaki beef and thought it was even better than the spicy shredded potatoes.
They ate and chatted.
An Nan asked, “Why do you think Susu suddenly moved here?”
Gu Zhiyu replied, “Sent by Hou Jianming.”
An Nan nodded. “I thought so too. But why is he suddenly sending someone to watch us?”
She thought back—she and Gu Zhiyu had always been low-key and cautious, never slipping up.
Gu Zhiyu snorted. “Not to watch us—to drive a wedge between us.”
An Nan frowned. “Drive a wedge? Why?”
No one knew about her alliance with Gu Zhiyu. As far as anyone else was concerned, they were just neighbors in the same building.
Even if Gu Zhiyu had put on that “confession” act yesterday, what did that have to do with anyone else? There was no rule against relationships in the base.
Gu Zhiyu sneered, “Because he’s got ideas he shouldn’t have.”
An Nan: …
“You mean, he’s interested in me?”
Gu Zhiyu picked up some shredded potatoes. “And you say I’m the clueless one? You’re even worse than me.”
This woman was smart and alert, but when it came to this, she was completely oblivious.
An Nan shamelessly replied, “Maybe too many people like me—I’m numb to it by now.”
Gu Zhiyu choked a bit at that, put down his chopsticks, and took a sip of water.
An Nan raised an eyebrow. “What’s that supposed to mean?”
Gu Zhiyu chuckled. “My first thought was that was pretty narcissistic, but on second thought, you’re not wrong.”
She was too dazzling—it was only natural she attracted attention."
